52:30 i think this was really fun but i also feel like you need to do more arena tourneys. Your joy and sorrow getting into qualifying or playing through qualifying trying to get onto the tour (even if you weren't actually trying to get into the tour) is some of your best content...as well as playing other creators. Do a few Bo1 tourneys and break them up as time allows (including more of this storytime). If they don't have any arena Bo1 tourneys, get with some people and start a monthly or a quarterly arena BO1 tourney.

Regarding story-time, you're a good guy. You probably cannot play competitive commander. Commander is, and was designed to be, a casual format. As its popularity grew, the competitive personalities from Legacy and Modern, feeling left out, came along and functionally corrupted the ecosystem. Competitive commander doesn't generally feel good if you are a decent human being. It is about four people, in person, having a laugh. Treating it as anything other than that will feel sour. To enjoy in-person competitive play, you MUST have a sadistic streak. You need to enjoy making another human suffer defeat. Most good people can't. It takes a certain type. On arena, the enemy is faceless. It's way easier to disassociate, and it's much more rapid fire. Makes everything much easier.

i really appreciate the HB videos, the format is the only one i can play "competitively" on arena since it only needs singles and a lot of staples can be swapped from deck to deck. It's fun to see you play stuff I could potentially copy and play whereas i feel physically ill when redeeming wildcards for duplicates.

I play commander, and I’m not going to lie the Historic Brawl videos are my favourite part of the channel. I’d also like to see historic videos eventually, so you can experience the degeneracy of all of the broken, Arena-only piles that dominate my favourite format. It’s fun CGB, half the players are mono-coloured tribal aggro! A target-rich environment for control!
@FluffySpikeM
@FluffySpikeM 2 года назад
>half the players are mono-coloured tribal aggro Where do you see those? I play mainly historic and it's been a lot of GW Heliod-Oak and UR prowess/magecraft/arclight phoenix nonsense. Also, some mono-red aggro and quite a bit of UW control. Goblins, elves, mono-black or mono-white aggro and even mono-blue tempo are almost non-existent in historic queues now, in my experience.
@jasperdalby8010
@jasperdalby8010 2 года назад
@@FluffySpikeM Yeah to me in gold and platinum there’s a lot of goblins, elves and- most notably- angels. Izzet nonsense and the like do turn up occasionally, but I’ve never before played against UW control on the Bo1 ladder. Perhaps it’s because I’m queuing aggro or tempo decks usually?
@FluffySpikeM
@FluffySpikeM 2 года назад
@@jasperdalby8010 I'm queuing all kinds of decks interchangeably, although I probably lean on the combo side a little too much. I actually like elves, but found them to be almost unplayable due to shocks, wraths and Teferis flying around. Bo1 ladder, usually platinum and up, but currently in gold. More than that, I turn to UW control myself when I need to assure ranking up as much as I can.
@Archos777
@Archos777 2 года назад
Yeah, probably based on the deck you play. I was trying casual historic the other day with a simple monoblue mill deck and, kid you noy, i faced 8 consecutive matches against decks with more than 60 cards (none of them with Yorion, mind you). If it's not one of those, is a straight graveyard value deck or one with gaeas blessing or some similar shit. That stopped the moment I changed deck. It's disgustingly rigged, I don't know what more factors into it to make the choice of which player will be at disadvantage tho. Maybe accumulated wins in a period, money spent, dunno. But it's clearly manipulated to milk the players, like a true mobile gacha game.
@jasperdalby8010
@jasperdalby8010 2 года назад
@@FluffySpikeM Yeah, I suspect it’s mostly the truth that the playing experience of any individual player will be tailored towards giving them a ~50% win rate. As an anecdotal experience, I was playing Mono Green Aggro a few days ago and consistently queuing up against and loosing to Elves. The minute I sub in some blizzard brawls, I get 2 Mono-Red Burn matchups and one controlly UR Phoenix variant for my next three games! It’s pretty depressing.

I actually really enjoyed story time. I empathize in the hollow victories. That probably is part of what led me to design custom cards for my own vorthos. That's also why I love worst possible. Sure, if you win, you win, but it's more about the interactions you have in the game. The personas and relationships you give us for the camera. I especially love the decks in worst possible where the wincon is for the deck to do its thing, like the All Might deck.

I loved the anecdote at the end. I mostly just play with my girlfriend at home, and after a while my decks definitely started trending upwards and it was leading to me beating her every time and it just lost all fun. I play EDH, and I’ve played cEDH. Hearing you out, you did well. Seriously, at that power level, you and everyone else is basically signing up for misery. It’s true. The fact that you ‘forced’ the game into a 2-hour span is remarkable and noteworthy and I suspect that those players actually did have fun… later, upon reflection. Here’s the thing, any one of those players would’ve gladly combo’d off on T3 or T4 and not given your NPC-esque experience a second thought. Honestly, you gave them a gift bc the next time they get hosed on T3 they’ll remember you and think, “I’m never quitting cEDH and T3 W/L’s but that game vs. CGB was cool” and, on that note, I appreciate The Worst Possible bc you don’t powerup. We all know you can, but by choosing the harder path of trying to ensure great play experiences, you give us something way more entertaining than a T3 Godo beatdown, something with class, something cool 😎

The feelings you described resonated with me a great deal, and I'm sure with many others as well! It's feelings like that which frequently drive me to try to find activities and outlets where I can do more good for more people and bring more joy, whether that's in my leisure activities or professionally. You already have a job where you know you bring joy to people with what you do, and that's really something special. Keep being you CGB, the man, the myth , the legend; the one in best-of-one. We've got your back.

@@avedisdrummer989 I accept that modern and legacy are highly competitive. Those formats are meant for that. Initially, EDH was not like that at all. Personally, I like longer games with cool plays and everyone being able to participate. In reality, there are different levels of Commander (I lke to say four; budget and little synergy/budget and lots of synergy/expensive and lots of synergy/cEDH). You get interesting games if everyone is roughly playing the same level. If not, you get lopsided games. Commander is a completely different format in that sense than HB, as it is a multiplayer game. That is why I get and enjoy the competitiveness of HB but don't like it in Commander.

The story time was really interesting! My opinion is that when people who enjoy playing cEDH do so, they don't really feel bad for losing. cEDH is the way to try the hardest at playing commander but at the same time it's based on requiring your opponents to do the same. There's no fun in playing against an opponent who holds back to make you feel better, so trying hard is the best way to engage with your opponents even if that means countering and bouncing spells for two hours (usually cEDH games don't last that long, but they also don't always end in a few minutes). What I'm trying to say is you shouldn't feel bad about winning and making your opponents feel bad in general, although this doesn't really apply to that "it would've meant more to them" sentiment. It's something I can't really have an opinion on because I don't really understand your position I guess, but I still feel you shouldn't bash yourself over it. Glad to follow most of your content daily anyway and I appreciate every time you make the effort of sharing your honest thoughts on stuff that's not strictly related to the videos. You come across as an actual human being and not just a byproduct of the internet or a caricature like this platform sometimes tries to incentivize.

Thanks for the story time at the end. I've heard others talk about hollow MTG victories as well. I think a lot of people go through this over time and eventually decide that winning just isn't as important to them as it was previously. They find other callings, like making sure others are enjoying the game, or getting hired by wizards to help make the game better, or making RU-vid videos to help others learn. I hope you continue to look for what makes you happiest.

I play 90% commander and just started playing Pioneer. Played in my first Pioneer tournament this week. This was my first tournament since I believe 1997 when I quit playing magic. I just started playing magic again last year on Arena for something to do during the pandemic. Arena got me to want to play paper magic again. I don’t play much Arena now that I can go to an LGS and play with people I can talk with. Better still are all the public house places that have popped up where we can eat and drink while playing Magic. I do feel old though, compared to my new MTG friends. I still watch your videos even though I am not playing Arena much. I love the EDH Sundays, and the Brawl videos, but I try to watch them all.

Was in the middle of a big moment watching Everything Everywhere All at Once when we had to pause the movie because my sister had a dumb meeting thing :/, so I hit the play button to see how the Uro match went, when story time came in! The whole sequence of things felt pretty surreal, although I do look forward to more Yawgmoth later on and finishing the movie as I type this comment out. I’m still kind of scared of commander because of this four people each for their own thing, and my brain can’t handle the politics stuff (Watching the Worst Possible helps in the meantime). I still vaguely remember playing Two-Headed Giant on DotP 2014 as a kid and that was perhaps the happiest I’ve ever been because there’s definitely one other person working together with you, but apparently that’s not a huge thing now…? I have gone very off topic, but I still want to thank you a lot for sharing the story and making content! It’s always great just seeing you play Magic, CGB, you’re cool >:) (Sorry for the long ramble.)

I think that there is something to be said for the attraction to Magic vs. the reality of competition: what I think you, and so many others (including me) enjoy about Magic is the possibility space. It’s awesome to find ways to win which are unexpected, counterintuitive, or even just amusing. Competition, as in so many sports, is often about reducing the possibility space, condensing the range of outcomes to a few, select, mostly positive ones: the classic ‘percentage play’. And so, for me at least, while competition is cool and winning is a great feeling, playing in intensely competitive environments often feels like a pale imitation of the positive experience of magic: I’m running into the same few options over and over again. I do play a bit of (fairly amateurish) commander and really enjoy it, mostly slowly improving precons with cheap cards. What I would note is that even in the worst possible form (2 player head to head) my friend and I had a blast drafting and then playing the latest set: the limited pool of cards, allied with the direction and focus a commander can give a deck worked really well together and ended up in an enjoyable afternoon of play, then playing again, and again! On the Goldfish commander channel and their podcast they talk about intentionally gimping a deck or making sub-optimal plays - and I agree with their conclusion that’s not where the fun is - but I think the Baldur’s Gate draft, or a deck budget, or a deck building ‘rule’ can do so much to allow high level play without immediately blasting your opponents out of contention, or reducing the possibility space to a few very highly optimised moves. Anyway, great content as always and I appreciated the little anecdote at the end… cheers for sharing!

I was really excited about the card when it got spoiled but ended up holding back from making the deck for various reasons. After watching the video though and hearing about your take on her, I took another look and ended up mashing two of my decks that I don't enjoy as much/are weaker together to give her a good framework. Cool to hear your thoughts on cEDH, I have similar feelings whenever I win with a Thassa's or Hulk combo. HOWEVER, because you have the opportunity to win packs which could in turn lead to a monetary value, I feel like you need to "play to win". Most times during our tournaments, the first game is usually done by turn 4-5, then we play a second game with slightly less power levels for more of a high power casual game. So it's easy to get some satisfaction all the way around. What I like most about cedh is that, although it might be pretty monotonous, everyone knows what to expect. A bunch of tutors, free spells and mana rocks and trying to win on turn 2-3. I never feel bad about playing a Mystic Remora or Rhystic Study or Force of Will etc... Whereas in casual, I feel like there's never an ACTUAL agreeable power level. What I might consider a 5-6, some people would call a 7-8, and now it's unfair or uneven... So I like cedh because it just levels the playing field, expectation wise. Also, some of the stacks in cedh get absolutely nuts which make the games ridiculously fun for me. It's just a constantly evolving puzzle that you're always trying to solve in your own particular way... Anyways, I hope to meet you in Orlando and maybe play a game, cedh or casual... Take care bud.

I didn‘t play Magic for 20 years but got back into it with Commander. Ladder grind is a waste of rare spare time, but i have a friday night Commander group with my Brother, my niece and a Buddy of mine. It allows for much more experiments and is a wonderful social though not always peaceful experience (family rarely is ☺️), but we often stick to modified precons and just try weird and janky strategies. One time i used a Bit More tuned combo Deck and though i won effortlessly it sucked from a fun Perspective. Pulling off the combo didn’t Even remotely feel as satisfying as imagined. Watching your Videos daily and you are both entertaining and keep me in the Loop about what i cannot do myself as a father. I do like the historic brawl content most, closely followed by the sadly discontinued alchemy content. What i liked about Alchemy content is that i love the much More diverse options which makes for an interesting watch, and i would Never be able to ist myself and i always had the Impression your alchemy content was less affected by meta fatigue. But probably that is the problem - the majority seems to be interested in how to win in Standard. For me it is all about having a good time and i wish you that Most of all.

(Brawl is kind of an exception as the options are more limited but I still have a lot of fun with it) I'd love to see CGB pop up as an opponent in the arena!

Friend and I played commander few days ago and my deck definitely did all worst things possible, and I felt hollow even tho I won. He was a true friend letting me see how far my deck can go however after the game I didn't enjoy any of it, I knew his deck undershowed and just being ahead didn't feel like a win at all. I do appreciate even if I lose if a game I played had weird twists and turns and someone ends up winning with in a cool way

Definitely a commander player here -- your list for this looks like a fusion between two of my historic brawl lists: My Jadar deck, and my Acererak the Archlich deck. The Jadar deck runs a lot of the same death trigger stuff, while the Acererak deck is combo with Bolas Citadel, Aetherflux Reservoir, Tendrils of Agony... It does run Paradox Engine but it doesn't need to since there are several ways to win outside from that. The Acererak deck focuses basically on constantly ramping, boardwiping, tutoring, and dungeoneering with the Mad Mage to cast for free stuff like Sheoldred and Ulamog.

I personally love HB, you should definitely do more of it. I've been playing it a lot lately. My current favorite deck is a Marrow-Gnawer rat tribal. Loving it.

I enjoyed “rambling story time with CGB” lol. What power level to play in EDH is always a conundrum it seems.

I'm pretty exclusively a commander player, and the reason I'm on your channel is so that I may live vicariously through you as you play standard and other Arena formats that I have not the time and resources to make happen 🥴

I very much resonate being someone who has tried to play control in EDH and feeling negative after winning because it drains people in what’s supposed to be a social game and everyone slowly gets more and more silent.

I can relate as I have gotten older to that empty feeling when winning or achieving something of that nature. Probably why I have begun to only grind to diamond on the arena ladder. Just doesn't matter at the end of the day. Ty for sharing.

Always glad to hang out. Here's an idea that might please some of your channel members and patreon supporters - make the shoutout at the end or beginning of videos being done by Jinny-G himself. I don't know at what tier that would be or just how many people might be interested, but you've already fed into the meme that much, it just might work.

When i play Paper, i usually play for fun, since im very much one of those people that dont buy single cards just boosters adn play with the cards i drafted or that i just drew on my own, because that makes it feel way more special to me to get sth exciting or mythic. since i wont have 14 copies of the most awesome cards of course i wont win everything but with a bunch of friends that also follow a similar approach it is always fun.

As someone who doesn't play brawl or commander and really prefers standard videos, I just want to let you know that these roughly once a week off-format videos are totally cool with me and I still watch them and enjoy a bit of variety. That power outage was brutal though.

I ran a really fun HB Yawgmoth deck for a while and one of my favourite combos is Nest of Scarabs + Carnifex Demon. Being able to put a counter on it with Yawgmoth, then use Carnifex to shift that counter to every other creature can result in a fair amount of board wipes, especially against token decks. Then throw in a Meathook Massacre? You'll make Phylath players pretty mad.

I play commander and am a self proclaimed sacrifice expert. I’ve a bunch of decks but my favorite one was Savra, queen of the golgari. Inspired by an old golgari sacrifice deck I built when I was a kid around the time of the first Ravnica block. I’ve since turned her into a CEDH build #Competitor but I love seeing yawgmoth get some love from you in this video. He wasn’t in my OG savra commander deck because he was too expensive ($$$) but CEDH doesn’t have a budget so here we are 😂. He does not ever disappoint 💜

Yes, i exclusively play commander so watching you play brawl is fun. Yeah i can see Yawgy being hellq because in commander he is an absolute beast. Hes anti indestructible removal, card draw, and sac outlet on a body that has pro humans spinkled on for flavor. Absolute S teir commander. Absolutely slept on. Edited cause i forgot he ALSO has proliferate. What a freaking G.
