Gio Uktolseja was born in Amsterdam, grew up in Assen/Bovensmilde, and later made his home in Rotterdam. You guys may recognize Gio from Schorem💈❤️
Gio opened his shop in 2018 after finding the space while walking by it one day with his wife. “It was a beautiful open space and immediately thought, this is it. This is a place where we can really have a nice shop.”
It was empty from top to bottom and had been sitting vacant for around two years.
This shop has really been almost 25-years in the making, for as long as Gio has been in the industry. When starting out back in the mid-nineties, there was really only hairdressing so Gio learned cutting, styling, and coloring etc of hair. He started learning when he was 15, and by the time he was 17 he was working in a shop. Gio however wanted to focus on men’s hair.
Step inside the customer waiting area at the bottom of the shop that was designed to replicate Al Capone’s prison cell in Philadelphia. The rug on the floor and the couch is where Capone’s cell bed was.
Over time, Gio has added many of his personal touches to create a space where everybody can hangout with a drink or coffee. There is even a piano in the corner as Gio is a bit of a musician - so there is room for everybody to jam too! Gio brought in all the elements of what he’d like to see in a gentleman’s barbershop.
The shop is also a space where Gio celebrates his Moluccan family heritage. Books on Moluccan history and family photos decorate the walls.
Making the shop more personal is Gio’s gallery wall of family photos and memorable moments in his life. Throughout the shop are hints of Gio’s very interesting personal story but Gio says, “if you really want to know my story then you need to sit in my chair to really hear it.” ❤️
