And since every non-watch person knows what a rolex is the proportion of rolex owners that don't know anything about watches is significantly higher than other watch companies in the same price bracket.

Calatrava and Cartier are correct. But replace Rolex and Omega with JLC, IWC and Vacheron. Also, as a general rule dress watches are more old money than sports steel.
Wow, you won the internet 4 months ago. Couldn't agree with you any more, specially with Vacheron. Imagine someone showing up with a Submariner, Yatchmaster or a Seadweller under the cuff of a Tux to a formal setting. I think if you have to go with Rolex for "old money" Watch, the Cellini line would suffice.

Every rapper, and athlete has one if not one in every color. They are all a look at me brand/watch. People truly into horology with money will be interested in journe because of the piece not rhetorical status.

To call it tasteless is plain wrong - Submariners are timeless pieces , I think the only thing they got wrong is saying they personify “old money”, which I think is just inherently untrue
The Submariner is a nice watch. If you want to fly under the Radar and quality time piece, there you go. I mean the most obnoxious Rolex one could get is that huge gold anf blue monstrosity that was revealed this year at Watches & Wonder; the Rolex Invicta. Hublot is maybe what you were thinking? Honestly, the way rappers have been talking about and flexing Audemars Piguet, it really turns me off from that brand. I know it's a smart move for AP to do a collaboration with Travis Scott, since it will make them a "relevant" watch brand with the newer generation (pay attention Blancpain). however, this kind of move cheapens that brand for me.
I did interact with some old money type of guys. Most of them don't really care about what you wear as a watch. I even got a compliment from someone when I wore a Casio AE1200. Same guy was wearing a Credor Eichii 2. I vowed to myself then I would get that watch in the near future. If anything, old money would wear some of the less known but more classic brands like Blancpain, Vacheron Constantin, Breguet, A. Lange & Sohne. I would not be surprised if these guys have a custom-made watches just for them

Rolex is just the one that made themselves popular in the mainstream when it comes to watches; while there are a lot more that actually says haute horology more than Rolex. If I had the money myself, I'd go for a not so famous brand of watch handmade by a watch artisan rather than something that came from a famous brand.
So what if the will of D is the will of the Dawn, and joyboy's original crew was the dawn pirates. Being the first pirates they didn't pillage, but instead brought joy and freedom. Those Rolex are 100% not old money or new money. They are just entry level luxury watches . Old money = Cartier, Piaget, Lange, JLC, maybe a 36mm gold Rolex if you have to put Rolex on the list
Rolex Daydate suits more than Sub, although Datejust is also good alternative. Same goes for Omega, in which Globemaster or Constellation is more suitable than Seamaster.

Im reading the Rolex comments. I get the hate but Rolex was first in so many watch making areas you cannot get away from them. Yeah they make 800,000 watches a year but its a damn fine and watch and very, very durable. I wear AP but you can do anything in a Rolex with zero worries.

I just want watches that have a vintage look to them from companies that have a long heritage. That’s why I love my Tudor 1926. Looks modern because of the shine but has an old look to it which I love that most consumers don’t care for. My next watches are a Rolex OP41 with a green dial and possibly Longines Sector Dial with a black/grey dial. I love the elegant timeless look of them. If I want sporty watch, I’ll get a Casio, which everyone knows they are God Tier. 🤣

Submariner and … I mean if you were going to go diving, maybe the younger generations of “Old Money” yes, but it shouldn’t have been the first thing thinking of “Old Money Watches” Vacheron Patrimony, Calatravas, and or Annual/Perpetual Calendar Pateks, Moonphase Chronograph Pateks such as Ref.5270s, Tank de Cartier correct, maybe older model cellinis, Classique Elegance by Girard Perregaux, some Breguet, A Lange Sohne maybe Lange 1 or any Lange really, Arnold and Son, some Piagets definitely more options to “ Old Money Watches “ than a Seamaster, even there are better options on Omegas, maybe some Deville, Constellations, maybe even if you pick a Seamaster, it won’t be the Diver, Aquaterra or their Heritage collections are way more suitable to the “Old Money” insignia.

You left out JLC Reverso, Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, simple Cartier tank, Piaget. An old Rolex is old money, a beat up first gen GMT is old money. A vintage Omega Constellation pie pan is old money. The kid in the picture looks like one of those trust fund babbies who has never worked a day in his life and knows he never has to worry about working.
As someone who is around old money. The vast majority of them are into cars with significant history. Not one of them are into watches. Most of them wear Seiko’s. Like battery powered traditional faced Seiko’s. I’m the fanciest one with an Apple Watch.
As someone who is “old money” ( I inherited 8.1 million dollars with a 2.4 million dollar house and a boat with a Porsche from my grandparent ) this is hell not old money but this are some beautiful watches
Cartier and PP are the only old money watches here. Nothing Rolex is old money, it never was. It has always been the "Look at me, I made it watch" so it's the Timex of the Luxury watch industry
The best watches are the ones without the date wheel.... Most months don't have 31 days, and you have to "go to the past or future" to set the right date to make sure that tomorrow's date is the right date.
Old money? Buying any of these only tells me that someone looked at a luxury watch recommendation list on a blog/forum. None of these are special watches. If you live in a big city you’ll see these everyday, several times a day. If you want something unique, look for a smaller company or independent watch brand. If you want “old money…” just look in the mirror and ask yourself why you’re trying to give off an impression that clearly isn’t genuine. F!cking posers drive me up a wall.
Subby and Seamaster “old money”? 😂. Only in one scenario. I’ve worked on projects with people that come from British families with a military tradition, who were often themselves ex-officers. It’s not unusual to see some of those old guys wearing 1980s/90s subs with their suits because that’s what they wore when they were officers. A younger guy with a newer issue is usually not new money, unless he is wearing it during an activity such as sailing.

Hmm more like vintage Seamaster 300m (wavey dial). The one Pierce Brosnan wore. Rolex is ok, go for vintage dj in 36mm or Explorer 1/2(polar 41mm!!). Vacheron and Patek is not for old money kids, sry that statement was ok 50 years ago. Some vintage breitlings can fly too like the old navitimer with winged printed logo. you won’t find the vintage vacheron worn were you guys hang, it is saved for special occasion like family Christmas, not for office hours.
We actually wear Grand Seiko, Vacheron Constantin, and, Patek Philippe. We laugh at our poor friends who wear Cartier and Tudor. Not like you NEW MONEY people would know that though... (I have $8 in my bank account and wear Casio's)
Old money is not sports watches, it’s Patek and Vacheron, FP, JLC, A Lange, Breguet etc, AP burnt that bridge a bit recently too or else they would be included.
