Outstanding shine and beautiful color patterns. I've only tumbled Polychrome Jasper so far and got a brilliant shine I've definitely got to put some Leopardskin Jasper in que! Keep up the great videos!

Thank you so much! I have yet to tumble Polychrome Jasper, but I want to! I don't think I have it in my stash of rough so I'll have to go shopping 😆

I see you use ceramic media in all your stages. I have been using plastic pellets. But now I see more people using ceramic media. What do you think about plastic pellets, and what is the difference between the two in a rotary tumbler?

HI there - thank you for watching and asking! I have used plastic pellets in the past (in fact, I think within the last 6 weeks with Obsidian), but I have found that it dramatically reduces the ability for the grit to do its work grinding at the stones. And it seems to prevent the polish from doing an effective job as well. Consider this... if you have a piece of grit squeezed between a rock and a Mohs 9 ceramic media - the media will force the grit to scratch the rock. If you squeeze a piece of grit between a rock and a plastic pellet - the grit will just get pressed into, and embed in, the plastic pellet rather than the rock. So I have eliminated it altogether. From rocktumbler.com/media.shtml - " Plastic media is not a good "filler" because it is too soft to contribute to the grinding process. Ceramic media does that much more effectively. We no longer use plastic media ourselves. We prefer ceramic media because it stays with the rocks through all steps of the tumbling process. We got tired of catching plastic media with a fish net and saving it in ziplock bags between tumbling steps. We still sell it because lots of our customers love it. "

Hi Shannon, Nice looking Jasper. My Modern Rock Tumbling book advises burnishing for 1-2 weeks. I have only burnished for up to 2 days before but not any longer. Just curious how long you may have burnished this batch or others like it? .... thanks

I do remember that from the book, but I have also read that one should not burnish for more than an hour or two or it actually start to diminish the shine. I believe that more because if you just continue to let rocks bash into each other for a few weeks - wouldn't they start to dull? If someone ants it to be in the barrel getting shinier, I'd say do that in the polish stage with polish in the barrel. Then just burnish for a little bit to get any remaining polish residue off the stones. 👍👍

Yes, I agree, I ended up burnishing for 24 hours and was pleased with the results, but I can't see going longer than that. In this case the batch was harder beach stones so the 24 hours probably helped a little, but will reduce to an hour or 2 for anything softer. Thanks!

Also I'm a little confused with the ceramic tumbling material. Do you use that in addition to the grit?
@ReikiGemWellness

Ceraminc media is used to cushion the stones so they don't crash into each other, and to fill up the extra space that expands when the stones get smaller during the tumbling process 👍
