This is exactly what I was hoping to get out of this MAP, and I'm so glad it means so much to you!! ❤ I had the exact same thing with one of my OCs, who I made aroace and used to vent and express myself before figuring out years later that I was as well, which is why it's always been so important to me to write character like this and why I wanted to host this!

I don't think I faced issues with the fact that I'm asexual and aromantic, but the problem is that everyone else does. What I mean is that everyone expects you to be sexually and romantic interested in other people and as you said it's like "the goal of life" having a stable relationship and start a family in our sociaty, when that might not been for everyone (being virgin is an insult for many people). I literally don't care about sexuallity, if you ask me what I am the last thing I would mention is aromantic or asexual because I just usually don't even think about that. I think everyone is so concern about others sexuallity that they forget that not feeling sexual/romantic atraction is one of the posibilities. There are so many other things that are much more important for me, that I really don't feel part of lgtb+ community. I don't like people asking again and again if you like girls or boys and that is perfectly ok, not even considering that you might not like either or if you have "discovered who you are" like if sexuallity is the most important thing and you can't be happy with yourself or know who you are until you know what is your sexuallity. Or everyone trying to find out who you like in school (like classmates, friends,parents, etc) specially if you are a teen, and when you answer that you don't like anyone they said "I said the same when I was your age, you'll see that when you grow up you'll eventually like someone" or that you are lying, when I knew I was not interested in that, I didn't feel that and I also didn't feel the nessesity to feel that. I remember being surrounded by other girls talking everytime about who they like or a date they have and it was quite anoying, until I found good friends that despite not being asexual they talk about many other things I like spending time with them. I think the only issue I face myself is that I don't want anyone to fell for me obviously, because who likes breaking someone hearts? Specially if it's a good friend. Fortunalely I haven't had that problem. But I just never feel bad about not liking anyone but everyone around me seems to think that I should, however, my friends and my parents are ok with that now.

Also, about representation in media, I feel that many times is the fandom who pressures the author to give every character a couple (asexual/aromantic or not). I feel that a lot when I see Peridot for example, it's like nobody wants her to be asexual/aromantic and are convinced she is in a relationship with Lapiz just because they get on well and are room mates, when in reality how many people are roomates with friends to pay the bills easier when you move for the first time? Also many people were convince Spongebob was gay when he was announced to be part of the lgtb+ community but it turned out he's asexual 🤣 That's just what I see from my point of view but I honestly don't now many cases of ari ace repensentation and less cases about aro ace representation that was "cancelled" in the end by giving that character a romantic partner. Do you know cases in which that happened? Honestly, I don't, so please let me know if you have more info, I'm curious 👀

To answer your question about media, it’s less of a ‘character was confirmed to be aromatic’ and more of a ‘character that had been shown to be uninterested in romance or even disliking the concept of it finding out they were “wrong” to feel that way when they find love in the end’ kind of thing. I can definitely see that the way I worded it isn’t the greatest, but I’m not really sure how best to rephrase it? I mean, I guess I just did rephrase it a moment ago, I still don’t think I phrased it well. (I’ve always had issues with expressing my thought process sorry) But the examples you gave basically sum up what I was thinking. With characters who are seen to be friendly with each other, or spend lots of time together being loved by the consumers of that media more because they would make a cute ship rather than being loved because they have a lovely bond. But in regards to the creators of the media themselves, it’s again more of them making a character that seems disinterested in the idea of having a romantic partner, then giving them one randomly with no build up to this relationship at all. It’s can sometimes feel like a punch to the gut y’know? Because often times I find myself becoming invested in a character, someone who is well written and interesting and has an interesting story and personality. And then, if this character gains a romantic partner, it feels all sorts of wrong. Their personality completely changes, if they’re a witty character they become a bumbling idiot. If they’re a introverted character they become an extrovert. If they have priorities and issues they have to deal with, it’s pushed to the back so we can get a romance subplot. Often times this subplot including the person in love acting terribly to their friends and family for the sake of this love interest they barley even know. And this is generally viewed as a positive thing. When you love a character, you tend to project onto them. Not everyone does this, but I do. It feels.. comforting. Finding a sense of relatability to someone you admire. And often the main thing that makes me drawn to a character is when they have a lack of interest in romance. Whether it be explicitly stated or just implied, it makes me feel seen. So when that character is reduced to something that you can’t even recognize due to the incessant need for a romance side plot, it’s… disheartening to say the least. I’m really sorry if this didn’t answer your question, I know it’s a bit rambly, but I’m not really sure how else to explain how I feel when this happens. I don’t think I quite scratched the surface to how I feel about it, but hey, feelings are complicated and untangling them is too.
