I'm correcting a mistake in the video (thanks to the viewer for pointing it out!): The masculine gender differs in the accusative case for animate nouns (e.g. pán) and inanimate (e.g. strom).
Vidíš toho/tamtoho/tohoto/tohohle pána? (as in the examples in the video)
vs. Vidíš TEN/TAMTEN/TENTO/TENHLE strom?
In English it is more simple: we say "this" or "that". In Czech, we also have to think about the gender and the case. In this first part, I will demonstrate how to easily translate "that, that one over there" and "this."

ERRATA: Actually masculine differs for animate and inanimate in the accusative case (the other cases are the same for Ma and Mi as said in the video): Masc animate acc: "Vidím TOHO pána." (as in the video) but Masc inanimate acc: "Vidím TEN stůl." (notice the form reuses the nominative form similarly as neuter accusative does)

True, that escaped my attention when I was preparing the video. Thank you so much for pointing it out, I will add a note to the video.

Working through the Czech course on Duolingo and this just makes me want to cry. So far I've only really learned the nom and acc cases, and that's been confusing enough!
@CzechbyZuzka
@CzechbyZuzka Год назад
This is a video where I show all the cases (for those learners that are familiar with them). I'm sorry you feel overwhelmed. At this point you should only focus on the nominative and accusative and add more later when you are ready. *Pomalu, ale jistě!* (Slowly, but surely) You can also check my playlist called _Grammatical cases._

@@CzechbyZuzka it's ok, I'm learning for fun and have never encountered gendered language before. It's cool watching your videos every so often because I get a peek at what is to come.

How is it? Never encountered gendered language? French, Greek, Spanish, Polish, Portugal, Sweden , Italian are gendered languages. What languages have you studied? English? LOL

@@basementcattiger6231 native english speaker, studied only Japanese up until now. Going from those two languages to Czech has been a test. Even the whole ho, jeho, ji, její, ty, vy, on, ona and all the particular ways they are used has been a lot to learn.

Maybe it’ll be mentioned, but how does ‚tamhle‘ fit into all this?
@CzechbyZuzka
@CzechbyZuzka Год назад
I didn't mention it in this video because it's an adverb. It works on the same principle as tenhle, tahle, etc. Tam = there tamhle = over there. Another example of an adverb: tady = here tadyhle = over here

I'm confused about something. You mention that we can't say "Promluvíme si o té", but is it ok to say "Ta nám nic neřekla," where ta means "she"? I see this sentence in my textbook.
@CzechbyZuzka
@CzechbyZuzka Год назад
I was talking about the demonstrative pronouns. _Promluvíme si o té_ is incomplete because we need to know the reference (the words order suggests it should be té + noun). We could, eventually, say: O té si promluvíme. - We will speak about her (=that woman) / about it (=that book) where té would work more as a personal pronoun than a demontrative pronoun. As you mention, in your sentence "Ta nám nic neřekla", *ta* has a function of a personal pronoun and that's why in English we would translate it as *she,* not *that.* I hope my answer clarified this for you.
@holesinroof
@holesinroof Год назад
@@CzechbyZuzka Yes, that's very helpful. Thank you! Your point about word order is interesting. How ten and ta (and their declined forms) can serve as personal pronouns seems to be a complicated issue.
