These simple steps in Lightroom using the Masking Section are great for bringing Portraits to Life and making them POP! I've had lots of comments on my Photoshop 20/10 video; here's an alternative way to do it in Lightroom that I actually think I new prefer. It works a treat making portraits look like they're coming forward of the screen / paper.

So happy i found your page 3-4 months ago because your portraits are just my style and i learned alot just your 20/10 did alot for my print z . A little tip you should do to engage your audience even more is to have a video where you critique our portraits and what we could do to make them better. That would be both fun and learning i would def send in one

Yeah it can work on all portraits for sure...I do use it 99.9% of the time. For some, like females / young girls, you just need to be a bit more sensitive with the settings and reduce them so that you get the impact but don't affect the skin too much...if that makes sense

The biggest difference between your portraits and others/trending styles is your f-stop is f2.0. Personally, I love lowering my f-stop. My first beauty shoot, all the images needed to look like 1800s western photography. So I shot at f1.8 on my 85mm and added paper textures, scratches, along with a sepia filter. The final product was so believable!

Glyn, Thank you for sharing your face enhancing technique with and without an additional light source. I use Capture One and I am sure your 20,20,20, and 10 adjustments will work for me. Second Comment: Glyn, I tried your 20/10 method on a group shot of 15 college students. I studied the before and after photos side-by-side on a full screen display and enlarged. As I scrolled past each face there is a slight but noticeable sharpness, definition, and brightness. My original was lacking and your 20/10 version is the winner. The light source was church lighting but not strong. My camera is a Nikon Z II with a 24-70 mm lens shot at F10 and low ISO. Thank You, Father Dan

Yeah I know what you mean. I do tend to use Lightroom (Cloud) more these days as opposed to Lightroom Classic sit's definitely quicker 👍

Hello dear distant friend, I wanted to tell you that it`s a very nice system, I don`t have lightroom but I think it can also be done in capture one, or at least I hope so. When I didn`t have a f.1,4 portrait lens yet, to make the similar effect I used to make two masks: the first one more blurred and the second one closer to the central area of the face, less blurred. Anyway it`s nice and fast and can replace the two passes with USM20 and 10 zonal in photoshop.

Liking the sound of your previous technique Davide and yeah... this would work on CaptureOne for sure 👍 Keep well out there my friend

Thanks for taking my question or doubt how to use in Lightroom 20, 10 rule. Glyn, something getting in my mind when we use double exposure technique mixing up this technique for editing like sharping final details or structures or little adjustment with luminous.... Will that be same or more to it. Any suggestions please

More than welcome...really appreciate you watching the video. As for your question, yeah it could work but would definitely mean more to it. Worth trying though...always good to find new and different ways to do things 👍

Hi Glyn, thanks for this - really helpful. Quick question - how do you find the clarity, texture, dehaze controls compared to the clarity and detail adjustments in Topaz Adjust? On the face of it there seems to be more precise control in Topaz, but I wonder if the same effects can be achieved in LRC - especially with masking enabling you to adjust specific areas. I'd be really interested to know your thoughts and experience? Thanks Martin

Hi Martin. Thanks for watching the video. Ok so re the Topaz comparison, I do have the plug in but no longer use it because of the updates LR has received...especially with the control in the Masking Section. The texture slider is so good for the fine / small contrast too. Hope that helps but yeah basically I've stopped using Topaz because of all of this 👍

Thanks very good! One question Why duplicate the face after exposure? Why don’t you ad 20 on contraste texture and clarity on the fiesta mask ? Thanks Éric from Quebec
@glyndewis
@glyndewis 2 года назад
Éric you're not wrong to ask as many others have in the comments section. There's no technical reason for this..it's simply down to a life of using Photoshop and being used to keeping things in layers 👍

What about highlight & shadow slider? Sometimes a little tweak with these can improve global contrast. Especially when working with ambient.

Hi Glyn, great video, as always. Can this technique be used for women as well, or would it be counterproductive if applying skin smoothing techniques? I will experiment with the 20/10 approach for women after work, but thought I’d ask for your insights.

Hi Luc...Yeah it can definitely be used on female portraits as I use my Photoshop version all the time; you just have to maybe tweak the setting amounts so that it looks right for that particular shot. Hope that helps 👍

@@glyndewis I tried this technique on the same portrait in LR and PS. For female portraits I definitely prefer using the PS route. I don't know how but it seems I have more control. For male portraits and pets, LR is working great. I'll experiment more over the weekend. At any rate, this is an awesome technique, and I love it :-)
