We both Don and I were born in east Texas Don from Palestine I was from Athens .. in our old age it’s time to get back to gardening. We love your video .. Thank you for your knowledge
Yep, you sure can! I am growing Prime Ark Freedom blackberries in 20 gallon pots. I planted them earlier this year and they are huge, delicious and I got a good production 1st year. Very pleased with the variety. Follow TP2's directions and you will be successful growing blackberries in pots.
I learn a lot from your videos, you do a great job of explaining the methods to use, also love the scripture you post from the book of Wisdom. Thank you very much. Keep the videos coming please.
Well, I did it. Yesterday I made the 55 mile trek to Bob Wells Nursery and came home with 18 berry plants and 1 lime tree! I couldn’t find the PrimeArk variety anywhere locally so off I went! Great service, huge variety of all kinds of plants and I will definitely be going back when I have more time to look around. I have my tubs, fertilizer, and amendments, and I’ll be getting the compost tomorrow- can’t wait to actually be growing berries. I also got raspberry, boysenberry, and dewberry plants. Thank you for the recommendation and your how-to videos.
Love your videos. I lived my life in San Diego and had gardens every year. It’s easy to grow vegetables in that climate or lack of climate. Never had to look at the weather report. I retired and moved to Mexico for 10 years, and for the first time I didn’t grow a garden. Didn’t know what to do with myself when spring came. Now I’m back in the states, and last year I tried my hand at southern gardening in containers and found Leon. My biggest obstacle was the weather. Rain and wind, and frost. Lost my first and second plantings and finally got a crop going in May. Learned a lot last year. Now I have a successful crop going and it’s the beginning of May. Following your channel I decided to raise two Blackberries, one Prime Ark Freedom and a Big Daddy (new) of all the fruit Blackberries are my favorite. Haven’t decided if I’m going to trellis them together or keep them stand-alone so when the weather turns nasty I’d be able to move them to a safe location between the house and garage. Unless it’s a Tornado, ha. Thanks again for the informative videos!
You are the man I've been following you for years and I use your advice I'm in southeast Kansas next year ill probably try blackberrys just not as many
Good gosh when are we going to see the squash again lol. I have never grown squash like I have in my hybrid wicking container. I can't thank you enough for the time, wisdom and effort you have put in our videos. Watching and listening to your videos have really made a difference in my garden this year. Thank you
I just found your channel while searching for planting tips for my newly aquired blackberry and raspberry plants. I'm so happy to find someone local. I'm in Whitehouse, TX. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hey! I do enjoy your videos! I am a Texas container gardener too. I have been growing the PrimeArk Freedom blackberry for 3 years now in syrup buckets. Fabulous crop this year! I also have some in a 2x6 stock tank. Would love to hear how you keep track of which ones are primocane and which canes are 2nd year. I get so worried I will prune the wrong ones. Please discuss in your next pruning video. You are an inspiration! Would love to show you my stock tank container garden. The only way to go in the rocky hill country where we live. I think I can garden until I’m 100 now! Thanks again. Everything you share applies!
Thanks for the kind words. Except for general pruning to manage the height of the plant, I don't prune any of the other canes. When the floracanes die after they have produced their berries, I prune them out completely. I will try to do that next week and video it :)
I looked into buying these from an online nursery and Texas was one of the states they said this variety of blackberry cannot be shipped to. Why would that be? In the mid 80's I lived in Cleburne and grew Brazos berries which I loved. I'm back in Texas after 30 years just south of Dallas and looking for the perfect blackberry. I love these.
I don't know why that would be. Take a look at Bob Wells Nursery. It's in Lindale. Not too far fro you to drive. That's where I got all these plants. They have great stock. If you buy online, use the Discount Code: TP2 and you'll get 10% off. However... summer is not a good time to plant berries or trees, so I would wait till November or Dec.
I made up fifteen of them this year and they work better than i thought. i have a two wheeled game cart that i can slide one onto the cart and use it like a hand truck to move them it has tall wheels so it make them easy to move. so next year i will add on fifteen more. i got my tubs from amazon 18 gal for twenty bucks. once i watched Leon i got it i understood it they work good. i used two inch pipes and cut three from a ten foot stick and it i don't have to bent over to water them if you have not tried then make about three of them give them a go you can always them for a kitchen garden.
Have you considered putting swimming pool noodle material on your fence wire to cushion the cane from damage when the wind blows and canes rub against it? You can cut these into smaller sections and don't have to keep the entire weight of the length on the wire. If it doesn't help it'll make a colorful video :) Love your channel. I've been following you for years and have a 6 year old berry patch in Denton TX. In the middle of suburban area and getting about 2 gallons of berries a day. This june the season lasted over 2 weeks with one patch starting early. Its 17-June and I have just a handful of berries remaining on the vine. Whatever variety this is produced in June and that's all I get, but the shoots grow great the rest of the year, so I make a little in propogating. Id rather have the plant growth than the berries, so I get the best of both I think. I have pics on my FB channel and would love to connect with you. Friend me! Be blessed brother
2 gallons a day?? Wow! How many plants do you have? Sounds like you have Floracane varieties. These are Primacanes (Prime Ark Freedom) They will produce berries till fall... then produce on the same canes next spring.
@@BIGALTX this patch started out as a twig from home depot 6 years ago and takes up most of a 10x12' bed. I've propogated 60+ plants last year that sold in a couple days. Some I kept and have three rows from that bed to the back fence; maybe 6 plants per row. Those outside the beds are not irrigated and dwarf in comparison. I have family in Emory. Do you offer tours? duane 5000 @ gmail
That's interesting, growing black berries that you bought at a nursery. To be honest I've never thought about that. Blackberries grow as weed here in Washington. Also the berries are all over the plants not just at the tops, and our comes ripe in Aug. Thanks very interesting. My Grandparent's made self wicking tub's they learned it from their parents, I agree that they work great.
I'm looking for tips on how much of the old canes to remove when the blackberry production is over for the year. I've seen old canes produce new shoots, so I'm reluctant to overdo it
I got four replacements for Bob Wells. These plants all have green leaves and seem to be thriving. Bob Wells told me to not plant right away, but to wait a week before transplanting. I followed your video for the wicking protein tubs. The tubs are doing great, just the original Prime Ark Freedom plants from Bob Wells were dry sticks. I do have a few questions? What Ph are your tubs for the Prime Ark Freedom? I sure hope mine turn out half as good as yours. I do have a couple of Pineapple Guava trees in the wicking tubs and they are doing GREAT! Your videos are the best. I look forward to your updates. I live in Edna Texas and do have some mobility issues, but gardening is becoming my new thing.
I don't know the exact PH of the tubs, but I put ONE POUND of lime in each tub mixed with the potting mix. I would think the PH is between 6 and 7... but not sure
@@BIGALTX Thanks, That's about what I was thinking. I read that the PrimeArk preferred to be a little high on the ph side. My grow mix that I used was originally between a 5 and 6. Hopefully mine will take off. I am trying to do exactly to watch you have done. Those Blackberries look amazing!! I love blackberries. We used to pick them in the wild, but with this arthritis, it's not happening anymore.
How long will it take for berries to do m e from planting seeds in containers? I am moving out of the country and can't take plants. So, I'm looking to obtain seeds.
If I accidentally put potting soil instead of mix in a couple of these containers with my blackberry plant, would you suggest I shake out all the potting soil and replace with potting mix?
If they are "Wicking Tubs" they really need "mix" If your "soil" has 50-60% Peat in it you'll probably be ok. They need to have a lot of Peat for the wicking process
Thanks for the videos. I just bought my PrimeArk Freedom berries using Stark Bros. I'll be planting them in 3 syrup tubs just like you did. Wish I had set them up as wicking tubs but they already have holes in the bottom. I'll be doing the wicking tubs on any new tubs if I can get any.
You can try to use plastic/caulk/tape... whatever to stop up the holes, and make wicking tubs. Here's how Leon does it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PmXMm1SHBJQ.html Might work!
We bought 2 peach 2 blackberry 2 blueberry bushes and now 2 orange trees , I wish I heard about Bob wells Nursery as we had shipped from SC .to Texas But they are amazing . Im wanting to plant some fingerling potatoes and have the potatoes with the eyes , I subscribed to you as you live in our Zone , What do you think ? Its only August 18th 2021 - we still have time , those im putting in ground , but I have Containers, pots etc ... Thank u for so much informative information. Josette Tharp 🙏🏻
@@BIGALTX thank you for all your informative content and for answering my question .God bless you & your family .have a beautiful evening. Josette Tharp 🙏🏻
Good Morning, I am thinking of restarting my berry patch and will try this method. What growing zone are you in. I am in zone 9B in south Louisiana. We do not have a very long dormant period, nor the chilling hours required that some of the berry plants needed. I have used the wicking tub method, yours, this year for some of my vegetable plants and it worked GREAT. Thanks for the tutorial on making the tubs.
I'm in 8A. I'm not sure how important chilling hours are on blackberries, but always try to get some that will be adapted for your area. Glad your tubs are working out well :)
Love you video and need some help on a couple things. First is for a blueberry plant wicking tub do you fill it with a water / vinegar mix? They say to add 1 tbsp of vinegar to gallon of water but does the vinegar last in the solution to work? Second what blackberries are most resistant to orange rust? I live in Houston and orange rust always hits my in ground berries.
Can't help with blueberries... I've never grown any. Just don't like their flavor :( Prime Ark Freedom and Ponca blackberries seem very disease resistant. Ponca: fruitgrowersnews.com/news/26601/ Freedom description from Stark Bros: "Excellent choice for home gardening or farmer’s markets. Disease-resistant to rust. Everbearing primocane. Early season. Drought tolerant. Cold-hardy. First-year canes begin ripening in July, while second-year canes bear heaviest crops in June. " Having said that... I did experience some fungus last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UhzfCAa53vI.html Spraying LiquaCop as directed should cure the rust.
Hey TP2 - I know this question's been asked a few times, but I wasn't super clear on your answer(s) 😄 I'm thinking about using your hybrid wicking tub idea ("this ain't panty hose or nothing" - best line ever) for blackberries. My understanding is that when you put in the soil, it will fill in around the sides and between the corrugated pipe. However if that soil goes to the bottom of the tub, below the level of the air gap, won't the roots grow down that way and then get soaked in the water? The air gap is only within the corrugated pipe, right? I'm concerned about them roots just sitting in the water until it's all wicked up. However, you (and Leon) seem to be doing it this way so ... PS: love your channel and the information! learning so much
Probably only 15% or so of the soil is IN the water. Most of the roots will stop at the pipes and "air prune". I don't understand all of it, but it seems to work well :)
Impressive. Just found your channel and subscribed. A few questions if you know: 1-1 am 70 miles north of NY city. Do you think the roots would be permanently killed if I did it in tubs here? Can get down to single digit temps. 2-is there one stalk in each tub?? Do they propagate like raspberries?( more and more stalks growing out of the soil?
Yes they multiply like raspberries (from the roots) Yes, I planted one per tub... Here's the planting video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-14EOOAlzViQ.html As far whether they will endure your winter, you'll have to ask a local nursery. If THEY keep plants in pots all winter... so should YOU be able to... right? :) Hope that helps, alan
Enjoyed your berry planting videos. One thing no one ever tells us is where to plant them. In the Houston area with all the humidity and heat, will they do well in full sun? or do you need to protect them and give shade in the afternoon sun?
FULL sun. Blackberries LOVE the sun, and hot humid climate doesn't seem to affect them. They might get some fungus from the high humidity, but spraying them with LiquaCop can prevent that. I'm going to spray mine as soon as all the blooms are gone. amzn.to/3dOvxC8
You're welcome... TRY it!! :) What chemical were you spraying on that roof in your video? Does it work for metal roofs? The transformation was incredible. Thanks, alan
I spray fungicide to try to keep that under control I also remove some of the bottom leaves from time to time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DRbY-LJcLcw.html
Those berries are beautiful, are they thornless? I haven't been able to grow thornless at all. I do have wild blackberries taking over my place, it's tough getting rid of the wild blackberries.
What fertilizer are you using for your BB in containers? I use containers for my veggies and now are headed for Black an blue berries. Thanks and hope I can learn more, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video. I will return to it often. I have apache black berries in a grow bags. I live in the north east. Do I bring them in the house for winter? It gets below zero here,, very cold.
Not sure about Apache My Prime Ark Freedom berries got hurt here in 2021 when it went below zero. Not sure about the Apache tolerances. You need to research it. Might have to bring them in the garage or barn but if there's a good layer of snow, I bet that would insulate them from the cold
No need. As I understand it, the mix will last several years. I will amend it with compost, etc. each year, but it doesn't need to be replaced. It's expensive initially but I'm sold on it!
New subscriber to your channel! 😁🥰👍 so happy I found you! Just getting into figs which I plan to put in tubs like yours too, but I had a question on blackberries. Want to get some in this fall, found tubs. What soil do you recommend?? Looking forward to all your videos! KAT (North Texas-Denton Co.) Thanks!!
First of all... Welcome!! I use BM7 or 3B Potting Mix. It really doesn't matter as long as it's a "MIX" not Potting SOIL Potting MIX will wick water up better than potting soil. PS... you'll LOVE growing blackberries in containers!! I'm about 2 hours SE of you :) If you're looking for some great berry plants, check out Bob Wells Nursery. The link is below the video. Use the Discount Code TP2 and get 10% off :)
Thank you for your blackberry videos! I wish the discount code was working for me as I assume you get some of the money for using it. But I am still going to purchase because those prices are great!
No.. I don't get anything from this discount code. I worked out a discount code for my viewers. As far as I know, it still works. Try it, or call them and mention TP2 Now, they are having a huge sale right now.. up to 70% off... so they may not be honoring the discount code with the sale.
@@BIGALTX it's likely the sale then. I purchased 5 raspberry plants at $3 a pop! I'm so glad I found your channel and you recommending them. Thanks again!
wow,I been waiting for another blackberry vid. now that looks good. I GOT travelers triple crown but in the ground...... So no more ground berries...hmmmm
Just make sure you have a variety that will withstand your cold weather I'm not sure which one it is, but your local nursery or AG extension agent should know
We got to ZERO in TX last February. Now... I wouldn't recommend this particular variety because the cold really hurt the canes. But it didn't seem to hurt the root system at all... OR the plastic tubs!
Hello TP2... I watch all your videos. Thanks for your efforts to educate and share your knowledge. I have a couple of questions for you. I have three Prime Ark's in a 15 gallon containers and they're doing well, but I'm thinking I should transplant them to a 25 gallon pot. What do you think? I have a feeling a 15 gallon pot won't be quite big enough. Also how many berries do you get per plant (give or take)? I've heard one bush can produce 10 lbs of fruit a season or more. Does this sound about right? Thanks once again.
If you can get a bigger container, I would definitely transplant. Not sure how many berries. I don't count anymore. Depends on pollination, fertilization, climate, water, soil... so many things. At one time I had about 700' of blackberries in the ground. Planted 3 to 4 feet apart. 7 rows at about 25 plants to the row. My best year... they produced about 1000 pounds of berries.
Pulled my peach trees up several years ago. Couldn't get a decent peach to save my life. Bugs, bugs, bugs. I have 4 nectarine trees now, but this might be their last year. ETX has too many disease and bug problems to grow some fruit. Figs and pears do well for me. Very little input and lots of output
Mr Leon is in South OK and seems to have no problems. It got down to zero F here in February. They might have frozen, but didn't bust. I haven't seen any reason to worry about it.
Primocane These are Prime Ark Freedom blackberries I got mine at bobwellsnursery.com/ But, I think he's out right now I also have bought from Nourse Farms and Stark Brothers If your zone gets really cold the PAFs may not be for you Here's a video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CRTP2zwSnp8.html
I have mine in containers but not as big as yours. After the berries rippened and were picked the leaves started turning brown, but the funny thing is so did the leaves on the new canes. Do you think I need to add something to the soil?
Make sure they have enough fertilizer (but not too much) and water. They are pretty thirsty. I think i give mine about 2 to 3 gallons a day in those wicking tubs It could be a fungus. Do some research and see what others think. Take some pictures and ask your Ag Extension Agent about it.
All new blackberry plants now are patented and I can't reproduce them for sale. Sorry I use bobwellsnursery.com/ If he doesn't have them, I also have used www.noursefarms.com/
How do you think they will over winter? I know here in Texas isn’t to bad but a few days in the 20s in a damp above ground tub could be bad. I grow in tubs and raised beds but trying to over winter is a different story. That’s a lot of $$$$ blackberries and fruit trees to lose.
Think about it... Every nursery that sells blackberries overwinters them in pots. They don't do anything special for them. They just leave them in the pots all winter. I talked to Ed at Bob Wells Nursery. He said they will be fine in the winter. He said when it's going to be really cold, like in the teens, they will turn on the sprinklers on all their trees and berry plants to help protect them. No worries :)
Having said that... I WILL have to take some care with the Satsuma Orange tree I have in a pot. I will probably put it in the ground this winter... or bring it in the barn if it gets real cold.
How long I wonder will these protein tubs last out in the weather? I'm interested in doing some of these self wicking tubs, watched some of gardening with leon and your videos as well. Thanks for the info

Looks great! Mine are not as big as yours but they have produced a few this first spring. I'm thinking about side dressing with some triple 13 now. I should have done this earlier but did not...what's your thoughts?
That's a great idea! If they are in containers, put it on the outside ring of the containers. Don't burn the roots. I've been using a 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer from Hoss Tools. I use it about every 10 days or so. It's hard to burn with water soluble. Here's my Associate Link to Hoss Tools: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
@@BIGALTX Thanks for the reply! I had tried to get some 20-20-20 earlier but they were sold out....I hope to get another order in soon. I'll be sure to use your link when I do. Mine are planted in the ground and I need to add more mulch and will add some triple 13 now and continue with the 20-20-20. Thanks again, take care!
It got down to -5F in 2021 and the plants did not freeze HOWEVER... some of the canes DID freeze, so this variety would probably not do well in the northern climates
I would say one. I put 2 in my Earthbox and it did well, but remember, blackberries spread by the roots. So, even if you only put one in there it should have many canes shoot up in the coming years. So, I don't think there's any advantage to having 2 in one EB... Maybe the first year, but after that, it's going to get pretty crowded even with one plant. Mine seem to be one solid mass of roots, both in the EB and in the Wicking Tubs.
I just bought some 1 gallon plants. Its late in the season for planting (end of July) and mighty hot. Do you think Ill have any trouble keeping them alive in containers outdoors?
I would keep them in pots for the summer (if you can remember to water daily) I would put them in a spot that gets partial sun. Maybe early day sun, but not late day (hotter) sun. I think it's too hot to plant right now.
I think that's too small for 2 plants. You can, but I don't think you're gaining anything. My containers are around 18 to 20 gallons and I've only ever put one plant in them In a year or 2 the pot is pretty much filled with roots. 2 plants will only fill the container with roots quicker. I put 2 plants in an EarthBox, but didn't see any advantage to it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_JOPAtuPXQ.html They got big and took over the pot, but I think they would have even if I planted only one.
I have a question regarding primark freedom blackberries. I have 6 plants that have been in the ground for 2 years. Mine do not look as good as yours. They are making new Cain's, but growing slowly and a pale green. I also have primeark Arapahoe, and primeark Navajo. They look like yours. Nice and green. And growing like crazy. But the freedoms are not near as vibrant.
Hmmmm... Not sure. If they are a little pale they might need some fertilizer. Try some water soluble fertllizer on them and see how they do. I use the 20-20-20 from Hoss Tools, along with their MicroBoost. Here's my Associate Link to Hoss: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
I haven't grown okra in wicking tubs, but I have 8 huge okra plants in an EarthBox. They have done great. I think okra in a wicking tub would do fine too
Do you think these tubs will work for me in zone 6a, north of Pittsburgh for blackberries and raspberries? I wonder about our colder temps than you in TX. Also, do you think the self wicking feature is key to your success? Planning to be a first time berry grower next year. Only 2 or 3 plants of each. Thank you for your channel :)
I really don't know much about your climate. Check with your local nurseries. Ask them if they do anything special in the winter for their potted berry plants. If THEY don't ... I don't think YOU should have to either. I DO know fig growers have to take their fig trees in... but not sure about berries. Local nurseries would know. Hope that helps!
That would take an hour to type. 😟 I have Playlists with extensive videos on pruning. I prune Primocanes a little different than I prune Floricanes. Hey TP2, On your advice and success with the blackberries, I ordered a few plants from BobWellsNursery. They came in last week and I planted them in my wicking buckets but they are just a stem with no leaves and a root. Is this what they are supposed to look like? I hope they recover this spring. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks!
This time of year they are starting to lose their leaves. I would imagine shipping would enhance the "leaf drop". I think they'll be fine. If they are the 1 gallon pots you'll have a much better root system than if they were bare root.
❓🆘️HELP! Blackberry in a pot. O error 2 yrs old. The owners bloom them develope into fruit. But the little green berry fruit quickly dries up. This happens each time after it flowers. I fertilized with Bone meal, . Blood meal & triple 13. What can I do to make the berry develop to maturity?
That sounds strange. It might not be getting pollinated enough, but I'm really not sure. The flowers have to be pollinated for berries to form I have a few berries that do like yours, but never the whole plant. Wish I could be of more help, sorry.
Not sure. I didn't weigh them. But, I'm sure growing in containers is equal to the average yield for what ever variety is grown. They do just as well...if not better... in (large) containers.
