It's not just job loss....my husband just passed away and I lost half my income. Our food storage has carried us for over a year. It will now carry me for a while longer.
I am so very sorry. Our pantry got me through several months when I lost my husband and I have built it back up with lots of canning. Praying for God to hold you close. 🩷
Last week I offered to make chili beans and cornbread. I forgot to soak pinto beans or take ground beef out of the freezer. So, I used canned beans, ground beef, diced tomatoes, and Ro-Tel. It was an eye opener when I saw those 7 opened cans on the counter top. Those 7 cans provided 1 meal for the 5 of us. Buying an extra 5 canned goods on every shopping trip is a very good practice.
Best by date😂😂😂😂.... I have used stuff that was out of "date" by several years and we are still alive and kicking. If it isn't bulging or smells funny we use it. Use discernment.
Yup, everything keeps going up. Grampa passed, so Gramma moved in with my sister, So now at 60, there are 7 people in her house. She's sending her oldest up tonight, because they are ripping through her pantry. Over the last 3 years my tastes have changed, so she still likes what I don't, so we are loading the van, and sending him home with supplies. Remember, if you don't love it, and can pass it, please shuttle between pantries. When my Eddie died, she started my pantry 6 years ago. We have to take care each other.
I had several years worth of canned, dry goods, jars, etc. In my pantry...then life gave me a curve ball...and I learned I would be moving acrosss country. So, I called my young, adult nieces, nephews, cousins etc. and we made a party out of "free groceries" for their pantries. The food would have spoiled in the heat changes in moving van and dried goods would get bugs or rodents. My family members were very grateful and had been trying to prep, but being young, they didnt have extra cash most months. I decided the thousands of dollars it would take to move all my furniture and decades of "collections"...wasnt wise, either, because I would have to store it all, pay thousands for move, and most probably wouldnt fit since I wanted to downsize. So what family didnt need or want...went to churches helping people, Red Cross helping people that had house fires or floods etc. I packed remaining personal items and necessary papers into my van...and started fresh. Less hassle, less worries, saved thousands! Have enjoyed living in new location near other relatives, and have slowly furnished my current "home" by thrifting, yard sales, auctions, antique shops, etc. Made sure my new abode had a nice amount of cupboards and pantry space. Started doing the 5 items a week plan...and had better ideas on what to buy that I would really use.
Found myself telling several older women at the grocery story that were talking about how high everything was and didn’t know what they were going to do. So I channel Patara and told them even if you can get 5 cans a week it’s a start.😆Thank you Patara your helping everyone but us older folks really appreciate all you do.❤️🙏🏻
Mom came by the other day to visit , and is probably wondering why a single guy has so much food 😂 But you can get a variety of food for $5 a week at Aldi. I get a canned meat , soup , veggies etc.
My s dad died last Friday. My aunt his sister died Tuesday. I’m holding my breath waiting for the other foot to fall. Everyone is getting together to handle the blow but me. He would want me to keep doing the things. I’m in my element and very much in peace with my chickens and canner. I’m dealing one day at a time but staying busy. Not just cans guys but remember to stock up on ramen (idc it lasts forever and will keep you alive if there’s nothing else!), boxed goods like crackers, pancake mix, COFFEE if you drink it, raw honey, cake mixes, oatmeal etc. I also like to keep the knorr sides stocked up. We don’t eat them often but they are great to have. If you need to you can use them as a meal. They are mostly just add water, maybe a spoon of butter or oil. Also stock up on your soaps and such!! I use rebate apps and coupon apps to get most of my personal care items for free ❤
Yep, got my 5 cans today Patara, I'm all over it!! ❤ It has helped to use a sharpie and write the date on the front and top of the cans. It helps in rotating the cans on the shelf. I do this before I put it in the pantry.
A few and then suddenly they jump back up again. Eggs went from $7-18 on 5 dozen egg cases, back down to $8 then up to $13, now sitting at $11.24 for that same case of eggs.
I have been forced to reorganize my pantry because I unfortunately lost half my pantry shelving when on support broke and took the rest of the shelves down with it because they were connected together. We were three feet deep in can goods and only lost a few items of sauce and none of my home canned items. We’ve had to purchase new shelving and start the process of putting our “home market “ back together. All prayer are appreciated. 😅
I started stocking my pantry and canning a couple of years ago. I made a ton of applesauce that year. My husband made fun of me for the amount of applesauce I canned. Last February he got very ill…I almost lost him…they finally diagnosed NonHodgkin’s Lymphona. He was so weak and lost 60 pounds before we even started chemo. He couldn’t swallow pills very well so we started mixing them with applesauce. We’ve made it through the year and chemo is over…he’s in remission and slowly climbing back up to wellness…don’t know if he’ll ever be back to where he was. But I’m glad I had that applesauce…and you can bet I’ll be making more this year to restock!
I am so proud of myself. I have canned peas, corn, green beans, I also have canned meat. Beef and chicken broth. I also canned apples, for pie, blueberries, pineapple, I also have sugar, vanilla, wheat to grind for flour. I made pizza sauce, I have stewed tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, and I canned sweet pickles. And bread and butter. It is so wonderful I can walk into my pantry as my husband says Lynne's store...lol
Hubby and I are 66 & 67 years young. We have been retired since we turned 62 (yes, we did it early). I have been saving a little cash every month even before we retired to keep at the house for “emergencies “. I now have enough to make sure our property taxes are paid for the next 5 years, plus a little for other expenses. I buy extra food each week ( a few extra cans of something one week, an extra bag or two of rice and beans the next, extra bad of flour or sugar the week after that). My husband was against me doing this from the beginning because he thought I was being paranoid, but I can tell you that since the “Covid era 2020 - 2022” He doesn’t question my premonitions as much. He just goes with the flow now 🤪😀

My brother finally has seen the light. Took two years.. we talked about end times. Said he wants to move to Canada 🤣 I said end times are going to happen everywhere on earth! I’m informing him in steps because at first it is overwhelming. I told him preps give you a sense of peace.
I got some of my friends who are young women to do the 5 can challenge with me. They don't think of it as prepping, just a fun thing we're doing. Joke's on them, because in a few months they're going to turn around and have quite a pantry 🤣 and be pretty prepped! We have to look out for the ones we love.
I was at Aldi yesterday and the cashier was chuckling because my order included 10 jars of hot sauce and 10 jars of salsa. Both are temporarily discounted for 'Game Day' and as we regularly use both, I stocked up a bit.
Dollar general's holiday baking went to .10 yesterday. Hubby had a dr.s appointment to day so we stopped at a couple DG's. Got 12 cans cranberry sauce, 10 cans pumpkin, 4 family size Betty crocker sugar cookie mixes, 3 Betty crocker spice cake mixes and 8 jars of heinze turkey grays all for $4.
I never stopped picking up "back stock" cans.. I've slowed while waiting to make repairs to my pantry but never stopped. With 5 human and 3 pup mouths that would look to me to provide if SHTF, I knew I couldn't. And when I look around at the state this country is in, I'm so thankful for having been listening to you and others with similar messages since the shutdown of '20. I had to fill my home in a hurry leading up to the lockdown because I'd not being stocking for back supply and I don't ever want to be in that position again if I can help it. My Paternal Grandparents did it, my Daddy did it and now I'm showing my children how to always make sure their family is fed. I've got a charcoal grill still new in the box which i may pull out just for fun summer BBQ's but it's there in case we can't use our gas oven/stove top to cook. I've got bags of charcoal but also piles of wood that I could use to cook over if needed. I hit every sale on cases of bottled water since we're dependent on village provided well water for our inside plumbing. I'll be investing in gas cans to fill up and so I have some on reserve in the shed while the prices have dropped up here (very temporarily I'm sure). You're a true gem, Patara!
If anyone can offer up a prayer, I'd be truly grateful. Today (2/1 already over here) is my husband's 83rd birthday. He's a tough man, still farming, but has pneumonia. He's refusing to go into hospital and I'm happy to take care of him here but have never seen him so sick as to take to his bed. It's easy to get left behind with pantry organization. With builders in, it has been impossible to get to my main pantry for nearly 3 months, so we were back to buying and using as we go. Next week until the end of February is check, clean and re-organize time and I can't wait to start in on it all. Just planning it in my head and on paper is taking my mind off my worries around Bruce's health. There's always an upside to the work we need to do.
I also thought to pick up some paper plates, bowls, utensils just in case we have loss of power for a few days just to lessen the stress of needing water to clean dishes.
I tried to do a no spend January buying only milk, bread and eggs. Then had to take the cat to the vet. Several hundred dollars. Then got sick myself. Not giving up though. We will try again for February.
In the last 48 hours I have freeze dryed...lemon slices, roasted chicken, garlic, four kinds of block cheese I grated. Canned five quarts of chicken bone broth. Prepping has become a fulltime job. Putting up five more shelves this weekend. Keep stacking and prepping folks...pray as you go and be helpful to others.
This is my first time doing the lemon slices.....I love them in tea. The freeze drier was and extravagance..but has paid for itself. No more wasted food....prolonging shelf life. Also helping some friends with their preps.
Patara, thank you for your encouragement! I began to follow your instructions approx 3 years ago. My husband was laid off before Thanksgiving 2023 but we have weathered unemployment just fine because of my preparation. Everyone thought I was nuts (husband thought I was over the top) and NOW, with the exception of my husband, they are in disbelief over our calm. The affect on my husband... total calmness. He has time to wait upon the Lord for work. It's been the biggest blessing, peace. We feel like the children of God that we are. Praise God. Thank you, again, for being an encourager! I usually do the pantry organization in the Spring. Why spring, I don't know. After listening to you, I realized I should do it now in the winter with storms coming, and I cannot go outside anyway. I have backups to my backups. Thanks for preaching about it.

When Costco is selling emergency freeze dried food, it shows me normal people are waking up! {The reactions were priceless today}! I've ensured I have enough food for almost 2 years, incase my garden doesn't grow, or a hurricane takes it out. {That happened 2 years ago with IAN} I'm keeping all my food in plastic buckets in a walk in closet that's climate controlled. My pantry is stuffed, and my buckets are marked and dated. Rotating is the key!! {Spices are VERY important}! I freeze all rice, beans, barley and pasta for 48 hrs before it goes in long term storage!
Do you have a generator? A back up generator for your generator? Do you fill up gas cans at the start of hurricane season giving yourself at least one week of gasoline to keep your fridge and freezer running? You can put gasoline stabilizer in the gas. We do that in June. If we end up not needing it for our gasoline generator we simply put it in our vehicles. Best not to wait for everyone else wanting gasoline too when a hurricane is 48 hours away and the gas lines are a mile long each. 🙂
@@carolhanson5941 Yes, but I've got mine in Mylar with O2 absorbers. Spices also need to be frozen before you store them just in case of weevil eggs. I also try to find whole spices, they last longer. I simply don't have space in the freezer for those...
My plan for this year was to take one room each month to clean, declutter and organize. Take inventory & be prepared. Hoping to be done by Spring/ early summer.
My neighbor lost his job four months ago he worked from home and he was in IT. It’s really sad. They have two young children six and nine. His wife is an RN so she’s keeping them afloat. These are really hard times for people.
I've had a good pantry for years. In my 20s I got sick and couldn't work for a week. I lived alone, and learned why you need at the very least a few weeks of food. I'm much older now and a few years ago my husband needed to have surgery and couldn't work for 6 weeks. I was so thankful that we had a well stocked party. It was such a big help can goods on hand.
Of all the advice and suggestions you have given this community, the " five cans a week" has stuck with me since the first time you suggested. It works!
Check the weekly sale at your local grocery stores. This is the only way I stock my pantry. Not every sale has what I need or want. Sometimes it goes weeks before I buy again. Always buy the limit.
I was just telling my husband that we gotta get our butts in gear! Lol. I had to get a new vacuum this past weekend....I used a gift card my husband got me for my bday and got it on sale! Yes I heard them angels singing! Lol. I just went and replenished spaghetti noodles and jars of sauces to replace what we've used, and they were Prego brand sauces, I know it's not homemade, but I got them for $1.49 when you buy 5 or more, at Kroger's this past weekend. So at that deal, I replaced and added more! Lol. They had Campbell's chunky soups for the same deal....yep, you guessed it, replaced and added!!! I'm with you Patara, homemade is better, but backup is heaven! To be honest, after working 8-12 hours a day, I may not feel like making homemade anything, and with my husband working 2nd/3rd shifts and it just being me, I probably will just open a can of soup! Not only do we need to add those cans but for people who have pets, don’t forget to get that extra pet food! I had been laid off from my well paying job back at the start of October. If it weren’t for stocking up especially on cat food and litter, I have no idea what I would have done.
My store had a sale on brownie mix for 99 cents. Woo-hoo, that's something I can pantry! Generally, I bake from scratch, but you never know what's coming, and quick brownies might be a big comfort.
Patara you are a gem! I have been STRESSED the past few weeks trying to organize 4 different rooms simultaneously, plus work on 2 separate businesses, work on my personal growth and try to run the household. Your video made me realize that I can spend the next MONTH working on things! Doesn’t have to be done in a couple of days, I can take my time and do it properly instead of half way! I can fill in the gaps along the way…. ❤️
Prices never go down like you said. Our freezer and pantry are in good shape so we shop the sales for most items and stock up. We keep a list of items we are getting low on. Anything that needs eating is in a designated space in the pantry. I go through the pantry in December for anything that needs eating by June and in June go through for anything that needs eating by December. Rotate, rotate, rotate. After the first year of the pandemic and stocking up we learned how fast we go through things. Very helpful. Yes, I am retired and have time to do things. Thanks for everything.
I need more shelves. It's getting a bit full in my pantry. But you know,,, I know for sure it's not a 'hoarder thing',,, but when you *Really* look at what you have, you realize, (at least I do) "I don't think this would last a year let alone 2!" But we have been blessed to put away as much as we have Thank God. Hugs to All!
Our "preps" are the same thing we eat every day. Just more. Tomato products, soups, canned meats, tuna, some veg, coffee, cooking fat, etc. Flour, rice, beans, are in mylar or buckets with O2 scavengers. Do need to go through everything for this year. Was out of sorts a lot of last year due to heart surgery. Back with it and still alive...
The local Big Y has been running a sale on canned beans black beans, kidney ie.. 5 for $5.00. Last week we pick up 20 cans to put back on the pantry shelf. I put $20 to $30 extra is the shopping budget if I see sales like this. Sorry I do not have time to look at the sales flyer before hand. I never know what day I will be shopping on, I just know I have to do per every two weeks. But I have been saving up for a big BJs run.. What use to cost $300 will be $500 run now. So It's taking me a little longer to put the money together. Thank you for being real. I enjoy watching your videos because you show life for what it really is. No frills no make-up.. even lived in kitchen with dirty dishes. You are real and thank you for being you..
Will be using my food storage a lot this month because we are preparing to go to my mom’s memorial. She past away a week ago 😢and we don’t do extra things like travel and vacations or out to eat . because of finances. I need to go be with my daddy and can’t miss my mama’s day. 🙏🏼 Things are tight and going up… ( rent increases and insurance so far) Lord will supply. Thankfully you got me saving 5 cans a couple years ago. It’s worth it.

We're traveling next weekend to visit my very sick parents. My mother in law has requested a couple of weeks with my son, so we are dropping him off on the way home. I plan on spending that 2 weeks getting my house in order and getting my garden plan ready. So thankful for such a wonderful mother in law!!
Two things. First my daughter was laid off on 1/3 and I went to her place and we were able to set her up with no spend January. I always bring tp and sugar and flour as needed but even in mid 20s, she has a full freezer and pantry. Thankfully and blessings to the Lord, she starts a new job on 2/5. Second I ended up with the flu and completely knocked me on my a@@ since 1/24. Hubby and son able to eat from prepared freezer meals and pantry for a week. We are two househoulds on 5 cans a week for February. I am taking paper towels, daughter taking yellow rice, son taking spices (he also has meat concerns and looking for wings and burger) and Hubby taking canned soups. Take care ya'll.

You never have to rotate the pantry if you rotate each item as you buy it and the dates are all written on the front in marker. The soonest date is always in the front. Used a can of beans? Then write beans on your shopping list, write the date on the front, all the beans cans are in one row, same item all the way back, furthest date in the back!👍👍
I have built my pantry around meals I can make with just the cans on my shelf. This spring and summer I am going to can some of the meat from my freezer and that will help me expand the meals available to me. I have staples , sauces , fruit , snacks , cookies that I good deal until use, crackers, yeast , bread mix , #10 cans of dried eggs, pancakes, gravy mix, dried milk , dried butter , dried cream, chili mix, canned food for the kids like spaghettis, ravioli , Mac n cheese, Vienna sausages, etc! Canned meats as many as I can get my hands on and no one is allowed to eat them unless we buy more at the store within a day or two!!! Canned meats are a big one! I am also going to start decluttering in spring I coach softball and I have to also plant my gardens!!! LETS DO THIS!!!
I so agree Patara.....any time I empty 7 jars I fill with things from my freezer or items that is on sale so I can always have a full pantry. I do rotate all my jars and cans. I plan my garden with what I have used the most during winter. We eat from the pantry and freezer. God Bless you for all your shared knowledge!
I came across some powdered milk in my prep pantry so I found a RU-vid to make yogurt using it. I am proud to say it came out great. Another skill learned using a substitute ingredient yahoo!
FAct Check Peanut Butter Last Years after due date I ate One 2 years after date just needed to make the oil back in it but was perfectly good (if not open)
I’ve been doing the “5 can challenge” for well over a year. I was already doing that on most trips to the grocery store anyways but I’ve gotten more mindful of doing it. I’m saving so much money by buying items on sale and then rotating as needed. It’s an insurance policy but also a savings/investment policy. Once you get going on this way of shopping you’ll actually save a ton of money!!

God started me out with seven boxes about 12 years ago. For the longest time he didn't allow me to go above seven boxes and I know that that was prophetic. Now I have about a Year's worth of freeze dried food and I've been working on canning since my husband died 3 years ago. The important to rotate and it's also important to taste the food that you can't just to make sure that that's really what you want. Because sometimes the food that you eat fresh does it taste the same after it's been pressure canned. My youngest son has helped me with a lot of things around the house but especially bringing me fresh vegetables to put up. I just started two 1-gallon jugs of kraut. I've been doing it twice a year for 3 years now. my elderly parents love homemade sauerkraut, so they keep my stock rotated lol. I've enjoyed watching you and I've learned a lot of tricks. Old gals can learn new things.
Please continue to prep, I have a gut feeling the weather this spring may take out a lot of gardens. Also, I believe the weather this summer is going to be very Dangerous.
I purchased 10 processed chickens and canned them up in June. Had an opportunity to get ten more this fall. Those went in the freezer. Now I take one out, have a meal, make soup and either can it or freeze it. I have food storage but am really focusing on home canning meals in a jar.
today I chopped and froze celery, carrots and onions and froze them for soup starters. tomorrow I plan to zest lemons and oranges and then juice them and freeze them. next canning dried beans navy, northern and pintos. then canning navy bean soup

She has over 50 acre farm. Maybe 40 goat, chickens, milk cows etc. she’s learning quickly but appreciates in put to learn along the way. 😊
I did this with you last year and the wonderful thing I discovered was. My family doesn't eat as much as I thought they did. I have an abundance with expiration dates coming near so I have been using them and not going to the store for the last few weeks I can be more particular this year because I saw what my family went through faster and what sat on the shelf. I will be reorganizing and getting more strategic with you Patera on this task.
No! Our prices are higher and some more items have less product. I compare a lot by ounces, price per ounce. I got shelves...IM SO EXCITED 🤩 I saved and bought two 5 tiered shelves so BRING IT SISTA on that canned challenge. I have room to get organized with cans now 🎉🎉🎉

My family makes frequent jokes about how I keep changing my pantry and spice cabinet. I just laugh with them and continue on my quest to keep it organized and current. I send them pictures of my new arrangements of the pantry when I’m done. Of course I expect high praise for a job well done. They humor me with that.
Started restocking our pantry as we use items. They’re more expensive but doing it a little at a time doesn’t bust the budget. Also our garden is starting to produce, so we’ll be starting to replenish our freezer and canning. That has helped us tremendously the past winter. Thanks for your videos, they are great!
Love your 5 can challenges Patara, but I'm already doing a "no spend" pantry challenge for Feb so I can work through my older canned goods and save money this month. I inventoried and have about 2 dozen cans on my counter that either expired in Dec 2023 or will expire in Feb 2024. I know the cans don't automatically go bad on the dates but I want to force myself to use them up before I buy any more. It's mostly beans and canned veg. This practice also helps me know what I don't need to buy as much of from here on out. I'll start getting more cans next month. I'm also working through my freezer this month and canning things I have in there-- like the Thanksgiving turkey carcass that will get turned into bone broth and elderberries I picked this summer but didn't process yet (going to make both syrup and jelly). I'm planning to get a half a cow to fill the freezer back up in March and saving money in January and February helps me to afford that big purchase all at once. Keep on encouraging people to stay prepared!
We went to Aldi's and $general today, found the country classic Chicken Noodle Soup cans at the $gen. for a $1.00 per can and they had a few other flavors, needless to say that I bought almost all that they had, we hadn't been to the store since before Christmas. Found cans of corned beef at Aldi's for $2.99 a can, haven't seen them cheaper anywhere else for quite awhile. So I rocked the 5+ cans for my week. LOL❤We also splurged at Aldi's and got us a grass-fed Rib-eye steak, under $12.00 and will feed the 2 of us nicely. Love your videos, Patara.🙏❤
Cleaned out my freezer today, started spring cleaning, threw out a lot of questionable + unidentifiable things 😊. At least now I know what’s in the freezer now. The refrigerator is next.
This is absolutely true! Preach it and teach it Patara! Just updated the pantry list and seeing where the holes are, and yeah we have a lot of pineapple. At the end of 2019 I was hearing things about a possible sickeness and shut down and I convinced my family to store up some food, because of unpaid holiday break and low hours, which we did. Then came my husbands vision problems, which would be 9 months off work. Knowing we had some food and other supplies stored gave me, and us time to breathe. It is worth it. Now if I could get them to read the signs I have been telling them about for 2-3 years.
don’t forget personal hygiene along with water to cook and clean! Goal should be enough food etc.for 3 days, then 3 weeks, 3 months worth snd a year plus if possible. I don’t have a pressure canner nor dehydrator so stocking can goods. i have broth to make soups as we may be called to help our neighbors. Also stored some hard candy for a treat once in awhile. Love reading other ideas!
I’ve been stalking Keystone hamburger & got 8 more cans today. I also purchased 2 cases of jars & I’m going to start canning again. I haven’t canned in yrs. I’m watching videos because that’s how long it’s been. I’ve been hearing you Patara! I agree that we all should be preparing. God bless you. 💕

Folks, don't forget your pets. Just had a friend need to fly home for 3 weeks. I went to care for his cats and they clearly didn't have enough food for 3 weeks, nor enough kitty litter...plus one cat is hyperthyroid so is eating and drinking way more. Account for the animals and pets in your care. Can you take care of them for a full season too?

I just visited a friend in Wilson,North Carolina and wow prices are high. We went out to eat when I first got there and for him, his wife, 5 year old and 2 year old and myself at a Mexican place was $125.00 and we tipped $25.00 and we ate it at home!🙏🏻🇺🇸💯🤙🏻
Another great video! I am making a restocking grocery run tomorrow. Our local Mennonite store has a truckload sale on gallons of whole milk for $1.99 gallon, and quarts of heavy cream for $1.40. . My plan is to put some in the freezer. They also have boxes of bananas for $24. I buy these as often as possible. We eat them for as long as we can, then mash up the rest, put into freezer bags enough for a loaf of bread and freeze them. When you use frozen mashed bananas in bread, they have a sweeter taste. They are great for substitutions in recipes too. I was able to avoid shopping in January completely, to be able to rotate my pantry. That is my game plan every year for the past 5....every January, we use whatever is getting older to rotate the stock, then I start fresh in February. I am actually expanding my pantry into our extra bedroom this year, and putting in more gardens. I have began going through my seed stock also. Getting a list together of how long germination is and at what date I can start my seeds. Our average last frost is April 26th...but I usually already have most of my garden in by then. This year we had so much snow, my newest garden still has 5' piles of snow on it. So, I set up my little greenhouse on my enclosed deck, bought some seed warming mats, some grow lights, and plan to have everything already sprouted and ready to get in all the gardens by May 1st. I need some garden therapy, to ease the anxiety of this dumpster fire we are living in! :)
