Let your gelatin "bloom"...meaning put in about half cup water n set for 5-10 minutes. It will absorb the water on its own...then mix into the rest of the water/liquid. Thanks kamon!

LOL Saw a few drones when adding sugar bricks the day we had temps in the 50's (snowed 5 inches the next night and back in the teens and 20's now) but I believe those drones are overwintering - not convinced the workers kick them all out. Way too early up here for the queen to be laying drone eggs much less have them emerging. Had bees in the chicken mash that warm day - a sure indicator the queen has started laying a little brood and they need protein so put out some dry pollen for them to forage on. Not even the skunk cabbage is blooming here yet.

When giant companies buy up smaller companies they reduce costs and milk the value out of the company. Over time they will break it up and sell the product lines, equipment and properties to other companies. It is a HUGE tax write off over the 5-8 year ‘decline’ stage and they are not at all motivated to respond to complaints from long time customers no matter how long you have been doing business or how much you buy from them. The only hope for the product is if in the ‘sell out’ stage a better beekeeping product company buys it and reverts to the better ingredients. By the way….I know I’m an old fart but you look 12….VERY knowledgeable for a 12 year old! Thanks for a great video, kid!

I also make my own patties but am not looking forward to purchasing the pollen this year. I'm going to try AP23 from Dadant due to some issues reported with the consistency of the Mann Lake product over the last year. That said, I have enough for this spring. I also make up my patties with a combination of HFCS, honey, and some pollen I've collected from last year if I have any. I've found that having 'real' honey in them makes a real difference in their consumption. Also typically make them small due to SHB so that they are consumed within a week or less. On another note - I've found that the 'hamburger patty' wraps from the Dollar store are easier to work with making up patties. They come in packages of 100 (for $1) and after making the mix up, I just scoop what's needed (thin or thick patty) usually about a tennis ball size or smaller - spread it on 1 side, then just cover it up and spread it out by hand. No more cutting or wasting 'sheets' of paper.

Appreciate the recipe. I'll have to give it a try and see how it compares to the sugar syrup recipe. Definitely like the ease of making these. Edit: Do you ever freeze these? I've always frozen pollen patties in the past for use throughout the year and they seem to be the same when thawed. Not sure if they lose anything else during freezing, but otherwise they seem the same. Edit Edit: I didn't see your recipe in the top comment for a syrup pollen patty recipe.

Speak of the devil! We had a high of 60 yesterday here in South Western Connecticut so I tried putting out some dry Ultra Bee feed and they didn't care for it one bit, this is after trying to feed it to them last spring, summer, and autumn. They really just don't touch the stuff at all. I guess I'll have to make it into a patty and stick it on top which has always worked. Have a blessed Sunday with the family!

So I just made these patties and they look good. but I’m laughing at myself right now b/c I’m a hobby beekeeper. so I ordered the 10lb of pollen sub (b/c my bees NEVER take pollen sub alone) and now these patties are costing over $5 / lb. 😂 I just checked Mann Lake and they claim to have ‘softer patties we’ve been asking for’ and ordering in bulk come to around $1.80 / lb. C’est la vie!

I made this today, I do not like the smell of ultrabee, it reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it. Someone tell me please? Pro-tips from an amateur baker. 1. Parchment paper is coated in silicone, wax paper is coated in wax, cupcake liners aren't generally coated and are a darn good size for quick eating for small hives. Depends on what you want your bees to consume. 2.This recipe makes about 44 (3 T.) patties. Line your cupcake pans, use a cookie scoop for easy dividing, pop them in the fridge to firm them up a bit. Take them out the next morning, put another liner on top and smash it down, store in a zip lock bag. 3. Gelatin is kinda like orbeez, you have to let it absorb water (bloom) on its own, it's better if you don't force it. So just go ahead and put your 2qts of cold water in the mixer and sprinkle it on top and walk away. 4. Bees need salt too, I dissolved 1 tsp in a little water and added that to the mix. I also added some molasses for iron and minerals. I add salt and molasses to my sugar water too.

Just an FYI to clear up any confusion.....to achieve the low price of making your own patties. You will need to buy the 1,500lb bulk ultra bee powder. It comes out to approximately $1.16 per pound of mixed substitute. If, you buy the 40lb bag, its approximately $2.73 per pound of mixed substitute.
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 2 года назад
Not true. Factoring in Mann lakes new more expensive 40lbs bag price. You will use.... $3.94 in Ultrabee $1.25 in sugar (in my location) .25 cents in gelatin .25 cents for the oil a little bit more for the oil. So yes it is over a dollar a pound by a little but no bulk bag needed. .15 cents on veg. oil That comes to $5.84 with no sale or bulk pricing. The mix is 5.5 pounds. So yes it can cost a little more but nowhere close to the $2.73 a pound If you plan ahead and buy the sub on a 10% off sale, sugar on a sale, and buy the gelatin or oil differently you can shave even more off very easily.

With the gelatin in the patty , with the patty sitting on the shelf without wax paper, how long does it take to form a hard crusty layer?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 2 года назад
Good question Ian. Using Parchment paper we start getting some crusting around 18-24 hours and it is just a thin layer. This is much slower than without the Gelatin. The above hours is based on a very dry (wood stove) house environment. When the bees are eating at the opening in the patties and the environment is more humid (in TN) they perform better. Bigger hives mow these down. Little hives waste a little but they do with most patties I have tried. This recipe is still not as good as patties made with syrup. As you know, for many syrup is very hard to source and is expensive. For the price this is the best recipe I know of without syrup. Would love to hear any feedback you may have!

It's like you're living in my head! I was just looking up a recipe for the patties of the pollens the other day. I found a bag or two of Bee Pro laying around in the warehouse. Looked as if someone was getting it wet while cleaning(just water from the pressure washer), and I figured I'd use it up before these disgusting roaches ate it all. The end of it was as hard as a brick, but I grated it back down to fluff in the food processor. Since we're cell building now, it's time to get ahead of the game and save some coin on the pre-made kind. The recipe we use is on the dry erase board fastened to the door, but it calls for vegetable lard. The recipe is dated "2004" in permanent marker. Don't laugh. The guy that spent money on that dry erase board is from Wisconsin.

K&L, thanks for the video? I started feeding pollen patties over a week ago and those hives here just east of B’ham already have fresh pollen & nectar being worked by the bees, I put patties on hives on 2-11 at my other location and they also were packing in pollen & nectar. Both locations has red maple trees within 150 feet of the hives. I found one hive bursting at the seamed, I saw at least 20 drones in it and lots of drone brood. I will have to split it very soon!It looks like we may have an early spring here. Hopefully we don’t have a hard freeze and cause us to loose the resources from the maple trees. I know it’s early but have you thought about a preliminary registration online that would hold an admission ticket position with a $10 or $20 non refundable fee going towards the fees for conference admission? I realize there would be more to the bookkeeping for the event but I also see folks are already worried about reserving a seat!

We generally make a similar recipe. We mix Ultra Bee with sugar, brewers yeast and a high protein ingredient. Also we put in an amount of real pollen collected the year before. We normally add a little lemon juice but forgot in a couple batches but the bees still consumed it the same. I figure my homemade recipe cost about $0.88 CAD. Btw a cement mixer is way better for mixing, but you have to adjust your process, 1 add oil to running mixer (to cover the walls), stop mixer add all powders, then add all sirup at once and immediately turn on the mixer. If you add incrementally, it will give a mess. 1 run in a small mixer makes about 80 lbs

I would be using the Instruction on the Bio activator bags and surely use it! Hopefully it would not change the consistency much!

Do you know if it’s worth adding hive alive supplement etc and how much. Also what’s the protein content estimated to be for this recipe. Sorry about these 2 odd questions

Is it possible to substitute the vegetable oil with olive oil? Also, possible to substitute the sugar with honey?

If you use honey you need.to use a different recipe. The video on syrup patties would work good for honey

If you are going to make this recipe (no honey or syrup) you can use coconut oil instead of veg. oil

Hello Kemon. I’m new here and I like to ask you this: I was looking for ultra bee pollen sub. 40 lb = $95.00 or more. $2:30/lb have you other providers/ sellers for this? I own 90 colonies and I am looking for bulk prices., Please let me know your thoughts. Stelian

Kamon, does this recipe dry out?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 2 года назад
Yes it will if left in a dry environment works good in my hives though. Did a recent video on placing some in colonies and after 5 days they were not dried out

Almost forgot. I've got that same scale & highly recommend it. I have stainless steel honey pots with clamping lids (they were originally used by public schools for transportating large quantities of lunch grub for kids:) & I can bucket 40+ lbs in them. Perfecrt scale for fmall operations.

Ive been struggling lol, Ive made this recipe 3 times and it starts out good but dries out fast, my last batch dried out in the fridge stacked in layers with parchment paper. Im following the recipe to the tee and the only thing thats different is I use a drill to mix, do you think the high speed is creating air bubbles and causing it to dry out really fast? But the bees love it before it dries out. Thanks K&L for all you do, I'll see yall at the next stream!
