Today, I’m going to share 7 simple tips to stop impulse spending on plants. So what is impulse spending? Impulse spending is when you purchase things without careful thought or consideration. You prioritize your wants in the moment without evaluating the implications down the road.
Tip 1: Remove your saved credit card information
I mean this both mentally and physically. I do my best to not memorize or save my credit card information online especially on Amazon. It adds one more step to the process since I’ll have to go grab my wallet and enter my credit card details manually. That way, I’ll either get distracted by something else or I can take a beat and consider if this plant is really worth the money or time. If it is, great.
Tip 2: Unsubscribe from email lists or texts
There are so many times when I have ZERO intention of buying a new plant, planter, or plant accessory. I’ll so happen to be checking my email inbox and see a click-bait email subject line. If you unsubscribe from email lists or texts messages, you limit temptation. If there’s a sale, you don’t know and you don’t feel like you’re missing out on a good deal.
Tip 3: Create a 24 hour rule
Honestly you can play around with the time. Some people increase the time depending on the price of the item. Basically don’t buy anything immediately. Wait a minimum of 24 hours and come back to it. Usually I’ll forget or by the time I remember, it realize I can continue my life without it.
Tip 4: Use cash
You put the money you’ve budgeted for fun into envelopes, which helps you have a better idea of how much money you have for your plants. That way, you can control overspending or spending in general.
Tip 5: Replace emotional shopping with something free
One thing you can do is try to change your behavior to something more healthy and productive. If you notice yourself defaulting to shopping while upset, maybe go for a walk with a friend or your dog.
Tip 6: Write a little note on your credit card
You can write a little note on a sticky and place it on the credit cards in your wallet. You can write a simple message such as: don’t you dare. This acts as a little reminder. That way, when you’re ready to whip out your credit card to buy a new planter, you can consider whether this is something you want to proceed with.
Tip 7: One in, One out
This is simple - for each thing you buy, you have to get rid of one thing. This helps if you just buy things that collect dust under your bed, on your shelf. (Points at myself).

I think the writing yourself a note attached to your card is good and hilarious 😂 Also not keeping your info in your computer makes it more work to spend 😀🇨🇦

Isn’t it so funny?!? I’ve already started doing it. And yes to the computer saving - I always have to walk to my wallet and usually I don’t want it bad enough 😭

I keep things in online carts a lot more than 24 hrs, especially with clothes I wait til stuff is 70% off. You can try freezing you credit cards in ice in your freezer, that way you have to sit it out on the counter to let it thaw out to get to it. Being very old I have cycled through just about every plant on the planet, there were plants before 2020, honest, and I want plants that don't require a lot of extra, even though that was my thing pretending I was a super rare collector, and please notice that word right there because everyone uses it. and no plant is really that rare unless its got Morty growing out of its belly.
