FAQ:
How can an actor/director earn MORE than the budget of the movie?
This phenomenon is called a 'backend deal,' which means the actor receives a portion of the film’s long-term earnings in addition to their upfront salary. These earnings can come from box office revenue, streaming, DVD, and Blu-ray sales, among other sources. Such deals can significantly boost the actor's total earnings, sometimes exceeding the film's entire budget.

@BoxOfficeJoe 12 дней назад
It's weird for sure @natureboy1313, but flops couldn't hurt him thanks to his iconic roles in movies like Godfather and Scarface and his powerful performances in other hits. His talent, strong presence, and cultural impact kept him in the game and made him a legend regardless of financial stumbles. By the way his movies continue generating revenue after their theatrical run-through home media, streaming, and other channels, so flops may become hits overtime.

$50k doesn't seem like a lot for GF1 but when adjusted for inflation (1972/2024) it would be $3.7M today.
@BoxOfficeJoe
@BoxOfficeJoe 23 дня назад
Hate to disagree, but that’s a bit of an exaggeration, @DATo_DATonian. $50k in 1972 is more like $370k today. Pacino earned only $50k for The Godfather because he was still a relatively unknown actor at the time. The studio wasn’t sure about casting him, but director Coppola pushed for it. After the movie blew up, Pacino’s salary skyrocketed in future films!

@BoxOfficeJoe
@BoxOfficeJoe 12 дней назад
Great insights @LaurenceDay-d2p! It's true, that I oversimplify these figures and the profitability in my videos, but that's because I don't want to overwhelm people with to many details. By the way, movies continue generating revenue after their theatrical run-through home media, streaming, and other channels. These additional earnings usually follow the box office trend (Hit or Flop) and can reinforce or even improve the labels I give these movies in my video.

@LaurenceDay-d2p
@LaurenceDay-d2p 13 дней назад
Keep in mind that of the box office gross, theaters keep about 50 percent. A picture that costs $50,000,000 to produce adds another $50 million for advertising and distribution costs. A picture that costs $50 million has to sell $200 million worth of tickets just to break even. Most of Pacino's pix have actually lost money. His overblown salary didn't help.
@MrEab2010

compared to his contemporaries, Pacino was well-paid from the start, adjusted for inflation. DeNiro by comparison was still driving cabs for money until Taxi Driver (nice role training though).
@BoxOfficeJoe
@BoxOfficeJoe 18 дней назад
Great observation, @MrEab2010! Pacino indeed found success relatively early in his career, but that was largely due to The Godfather, which catapulted him to fame in no time. De Niro achieved critical acclaim quickly as well but struggled a bit to turn that into financially significant roles.
@MrEab2010
@MrEab2010 18 дней назад
@@BoxOfficeJoe largely correct but Pacino earned a surprisingly large salary, even for 1971, for The Panic In Needle Park. I thought it was just an art film he did for rent money. I think the reason was before he became a movie star Pacino was also a successful theatre actor.

Break even doesnt mean the box equals the budget. Prints and copies, advertising, press junkets and random reshoots add up sometimes to addional millions to the cost. A 30 mil film that makes 32 mil is probably about an additional 6 mil in the hole. The more you know.
@BoxOfficeJoe
@BoxOfficeJoe 21 день назад
You’re right, @acb9896-breaking even isn't as straightforward as it sounds. The expenses you mention are sometimes reported as part of the budget and other times as separate, especially in the case of marketing. The Hits & Flops labels I use in my videos provide a simplified, generalized understanding of this complex topic, often using rounded values.

I agree with you to some extent, @patrickbrinkmeier2691, but please keep in mind that my video analyzes these movies purely based on their box office performance. Sometimes, money has little to do with the quality of a movie. A masterpiece can be a flop, while a terrible movie can become a hit.

@patrickbrinkmeier2691 12 дней назад
@@PLAYAIMUSICZONE .....Incorrect. When it was first submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America to be assigned a rating it was given an X rating due to the violence. However, Brian De Palma made several edits and the MPAA then gave it the R rating. It was released in theaters in America several months later. Scarface remains to this day one of the highest rated movies of all time by film critics and fan sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Plus, when it was first released all the major fil critics raved about it from coast to coast and gave it 4 stars. Siskel and Ebert also ranked it as 4 stars. Most of the movie reviews in the major newspapers across the U.S. also ranked it as a must see movie. The fact it started out rated X didn't affect it because they got the rating changed before it ever was released to be seen by the public.
