Nintendo copyright claimed my son would be a headline.

Someone making up a word like "Nintendoitis" has already disqualified himself from being any kind of medical authority as "-itis" generally indicates an inflammation.

I don't blame Nintendo ~The mother Nintendo killed my child! I urge people not to buy these games! ~implied to be mother but uncredited I got nothing, that's just so stupid and hate that that worked.

A lot of these are frustrating because it's more "I was negligent and don't want to take responsibility, so obviously the video game that was briefly present was at fault". It's like when people were trespassing and getting hurt with Pokemon GO and people blamed the game; Nintendo didn't force you into that backyard bruh

Also, in the "Carl" article, they say his friends said to switch "from speed to amphetamines" but isn't speed slang for amphetamines? Isn't that like switching from blow to coke? Booze to alcohol? Are they wrong or am I? Is it different in the u.k.?Someone correct me if I am drug naive here.

My favorite part was when "Carl" said his friends had him switch from speed to amphetamines. Speed is just the street name of amphetamines, it's the exact same thing. It's like saying you switched out using LSD instead of acid

they're secretly making free publicity about the games they talk about, because people don't give a shit about their ego

The second one reminds me of that joke from Frasier where Daphne was describing a newspaper headline reading "High-ranking Government Official Caught in Women's Clothing" and added "Of course once you turned to page 2 you found out it was Margaret Thatcher, but by then you'd bought the paper."

Since the whole Pokemon 'Electric Soldier Porygon' incident was alluded to, I feel the need to mention that that whole thing resulted in Porygon pretty much never appearing in any Pokemon anime again, even though the offending strobe effect was caused by an attack from Pikachu, but noooo, they're not gonna nix the brand mascot even though he technically caused the seizures. Porygon was unfairly persecuted.

As a Boy George fan I've hated The Sun ever since I found out they had a headline claiming, "Junkie George has eight weeks to live" (which, by the way, was in 1986 and George is still here). I appreciate the sensitivity you showed when talking about the young man who passed and his family. It's disgusting that the paper exploited what had happened.

What I thought was funny was when Chuck Norris tried to blame violent video games for youth violence... as in, the same guy who starred in numerous violent movies.

As someone with epilepsy, I really appreciate you going into detail about the relationship between that and video games. One of my first questions for my neurologist when I was diagnosed was whether it was safe for me to play video games, having seen all those epilepsy warnings before. Thankfully the answer was I'd be fine to play them. And all the extra info you provided is even more reassuring. I'm glad I don't have to risk another grand mal seizure from playing Splatoon.

Have to say Larry it was a nice touch to actually end the article with a tribute to Jasminder Bassi. The tabloids forget/ignored that an innocent 14 year old boy died tragically just so they could sell papers. The media’s disregard for people’s feelings really disgusts me.

I mean, to be honest "Carl" could be talking about the co-op mode 'Save the world' which DOES let you buy weapons and upgrades, although I doubt the collective braincell at the Daily Mirror realised this.

My ex girlfriend had epilepsy. She was once triggered by flashing lights in a nightclub. I accompanied her to every neurologist appointment and nobody ever told us about wearing an eyepatch to stop photo-epileptic seizures. Thanks, Guru Larry! (She has no trouble with video games as far as I know)

I remember the second law suit which resulted in later GBA games getting a warning message on start up and then the DS getting its warning message baked into the firmware. so you had to see it every time you start the DS up (unless you hacked it). The Sun is to blame for so many things!

Can't remember if it was The Sun or the Daily Mail (they're all the same to me tbh) but I remember they reported on a kid's suicide and talked about how it was Doki Doki Literature Club's fault after the game breaks the 4th wall so much that "the game pestered him with messages on his phone" (even though that never happens in The game). Cue all the other big outlets including the BBC reporting on this.

I did a report about violence in video games in college and read a court case where a woman claimed her son killed another boy with a butcher knife because he watched Cyrax from Mortal Kombat do it. To which I, as a huge MK fan said "Cyrax doesn't use knives..."

It used to be gaming publications and developers defended games from this type of slander. Now they contribute to it and wonder why they're slowly being laid off.

I’m a 2nd generation gamer. My dad started out in the 80s playing Donkey Kong, PAC Man, and his favorite, Galaga. He actually taught me how to play video games. Mom also loved, and loves to play video games as well. My entire family got closer playing games, board games, video games, etc.

Correction: It was not the first airing of the Pokemon anime in Japan that caused seizures, it was specifically the airing of the episode, "Electric Soldier Porygon."

Reminds me of a story I read back in the early 1980's about a teenage guy that shattered his wrist after playing Pac-Man for three hours straight. They said that his wrist was so bad he would have to wear a brace for the rest of his life. It turned out not to be true, of course, and the guy in question later admitted he never played Pac-Man in his life.

You forgot "books" in the list of things the press have been against. Literally quotes where they talk of all the new books from the "printing press" could cause young people to walk into lamp posts reading in the street... 100+ years later and people complain about the young walking around reading off phones walking into lamp posts.

This is why i don't trust the news at all anymore, and rather do my own research.

My parents used to tell me "if you play too many games, you'll get brain damage" to scare me into maintaining shorter sessions each day. I don't know where they got it from, whether it was a sensationalist headline, or whether they made it up themselves, but they obviously didn't believe it, since one time, my Dad said "if you play games when you've already got a headache, you'll either get brain damage..... or a migraine", to which my Mum's response was "NO, REALLY?". The idea that a migraine, as bad as they are, was more shocking than being put in a vegetative state for life pretty much debunked my parents' scaremongering on the spot, and they seemed to realise it, because they never once mentioned it again after that incident.

That was some good information at the end. I don't want kids but if I hypothetically had one who had epilepsy, I'd probably have banned them from playing most video games not because of anything the company did but because I'd figure "Games have lots of flashiness, no duh this will trigger a seizure." It would be very unfortunate as my family has always had a game console growing up. Even my grandmother loves video games (especially the Atari stuff) and purchased us a SNES when she found out we didn't have one. She actually considered it nearly a crime that we didn't own one, lol! Seriously, when she recounts it to me and the conversation with my mom on the phone, she literally lamented that we didn't have any video games! Grandmother of the year :) We got the console for Christmas. Mom couldn't afford it herself at the time (eventually though, we'd own two). So I'm absolutely pro-video games. I'm not pro-seizures though, which I had a co-worker at my last job who had them and that shit was frightening to witness. But if there is a safe way to play games and the issue was mostly the age of technology, I'd test run the game for myself first, sit with them as they play it for an hour or two to ensure they're okay, and then let them have at it. I'd probably still be paranoid and require check-in's every two hours or so (and if they're not home, just send me a text, dear), but just knowing that there is a way for those with epilepsy to play video games now is great. On the same subject but with anime, I began to notice especially with flashier shonen anime that they now dim the screen a little when something big or explosive is happening. I really locked onto it during the final fight in season 4 of My Hero Academia, in which the final part of the fight is done outside on a clear blue day and yet, when the main character landed his last blow, the result of it was shown with the screen tinted so that the colors weren't so bright. Japan is understandably terrified of another Pokemon incident and while I used to get aggravated when the screen tint happened, I too as a company would rather be safe than sorry and would do it, too.

The likelihood of seizures in movie theatres are far higher than video games. Both can still happen but there are piles of ways to have a seizure that are unrelated to video games

Dishonesty in the newspaper industry? Surely not!

Both Star Trek TNG and The Orville had episodes dealing with holodeck addiction, but the crew never stopped using the holodecks. In the end, it's about having self control and only you can do that.

My dad had epilepsy and played video games quite a bit. He took medication to keep the seizures under control and never had one while playing games.

Fun story: When I was 9 or 10 I had a very serious epilepsy attack probably from a light effect an uncle of mine had given my brother and me after having repaired it and played with it for hours at home. I was admitted to hospital for one-day observation (for the simple fact that they had to give me a sedative or something to stop the attack that, at that time had been going on for about 15 minutes at the time an ambulance crew arrived) and was bored out of my mind and for all the other children at the children's ward I was admitted to being much younger, one of the nurses decided to get a gamecomputer (Super Nintendo or something) out... From the vague things I can recall from it I didn't play long (I was mostly tired and had moments in which I was utterly confused because of what happened which tired me even more), but my mom was not happy (and rightly so) given the fact that, at that time it was not yet clear what had happened though a lot of signs pointed towards an epilepsy attack, so even though, yes, not all people are photosensitive when it comes to getting an attack, she was pissed off for having them made me play a videogame. :P (In my mind though, the most scary thing was the fact that one-day observation due to the cloud of confusion in my head due to the temporary damage the attack had caused is still registered in my mind as a whole week).
