Damn i can remember going up to Oldham with Arsenal and losing,in the Premier league early years ...to see where they are now is tragic 😮

Stadiums improved and it was only the plastic pitch which got them there.

Artificial pitches have improved today, but are not allowed in top flight football. Luton had same advantage. The ball used to bounce unnaturally. No doubt Oldham had some good players at the time, but that pitch stopped West Ham from getting to two league Cup finals, although Luton did win the first leg at West Ham. Funny if Hendon win the game in January, because they play on artificial.

@@charliemagri1669 The manager of Portsmouth said that in a newspaper interview, Latics went to Fratton Park and beat them 4-1. Three years of top level football on grass proves what a good unit we were, and as Graham Taylor said, 'it's nothing to do with the plastic'. Too easy to say that, what made Latics arguably the best team in the country in the late eighties was Billy Bremner at Leeds and the chaos at Man City, we poached some of the best young talent in the country, West Ham with Julian Dicks were a joke tbh.

If that were the case, then why did West Ham smash Oldham in the second leg, plus why were artificial surfaces later banned? It gave clubs like Oldham and Luton a big advantage, and I'm not disputing that both sides had some good players. Those West Ham players couldn't judge the bounce and even QPR had great times due to the pitch also. Football on any of those grounds was more like a 5 a side game. West Ham a joke under Dicks? It's playing good football which has kept them at the top. Anyway, Oldham dropped through the leagues big time shortly afterwards, so that proved that pitch and style of play did nothing for their future.

Went to the match, Latics were embarrassing! Been going since 1966 and anyone who can say that they played well against Fylde, Ebsfleet and Mickleover must have Stevie Wonder glasses on! This needs addressing to the lazy cunts who play for our team, WHO, we pay out good money season in, season out for season tickets. Over 300 pounds I pay out every season to watch that crap. I go to bed thinking of the " pinch me season " with a smile. By the way, buy the book " This is how it feels " by Mike Keegan. Its about when Joe Royle first came to Boundary Park, I'm halfway through it, its a cracking read if you're a staunch Latics fan from the 80's.

Thanks for the book recommendation, just bought it. Been an Oldham fan my whole life, lived and breathed the Jimmy Frizzell years until moving away in 79. It's still crazy thinking about Oldham being founding members of the premier league, thanks Joe.
