It's odd that you rarely see movie license video games nowadays, but once upon a time, they were so prolific that many forgot some movies even had video game adaptations.
So this episode Guru Larry goes looking into those forgotten films and those mislaid movies!

The guys at the hardcoregaming 101 actually talked about the akira game, it was so bad that they contacted bunch of guys from ICE, even the lead designer or the owner. Once he heard that they wanted to talk about the akira game he hang up the phone. Then they called to he's wife who said:"it's the akira guys again" and hang up the phone."

It's so weird that the Akira game designers would fashion an entire level out of Tetsuo's brief hallucinations (when he was in the military experimentation ward). It would have been far more interesting if they had followed the comics, where he blows up a frightening number of troops sent to stop him.
@DarrylCross
@DarrylCross 7 лет назад
From what I see, the place some of these games failed was right at conceptualization. They tried following the movies for some key scenes that only last a few minutes at most, and that approach is what lead to the mish-mash of minigames. Videogame-movie tie-ins, in my opinion, work best when they try to break free of the movie instead of copying scenes. Like TIE Fighter or X-Wing; it made the Star Wars franchise better by showing there was far more to the Galactic Civil War than what you see on screen. Far more satisfying than poorly immitated adaptations of a few scenes that I'd rather watch.

I remember when you mentioned there was an Akira game made by British devs I said "Lemme guess, they made a huge level out of Tetsuo's freakout at the hospital." I was not disappointed. It's clear they said "Rather than making a decent game, let's just take the most visually "exciting" scenes and make crappy levels out of them." Standard M.O. of the time. Shame, I could see Akira making a cool adventure game. Imagine a company like LucasArts making a dark and surreal adventure game out of it and maybe even including some of the stuff from the manga the movie (understandably) glossed over?
@pferreira1983
@pferreira1983 7 лет назад
Lucasarts would have turned it into a comedy. Try Sierra.
@kayeplaguedoc9054
@kayeplaguedoc9054 7 лет назад
I doubt that LucasArts would disrespect the source material like that. Yeah, they were certainly noted for their humour and most of their work was comedic but their writers were talented and clever. Though I won't argue that Sierra probably would have done a great job, I did use the term a company _like_ LucasArts. I guess I should have just said "one of the great adventure developers."

I heard about the Akira game a few years ago, although that's only because I stumbled across a TV Tropes page having a link to some page where someone tried to contact the devs of the game but them not wanting to talk about it and blocking all communication with the journalist. @glub-kitchen-imp

Theirs a documentary about Atari and one part had Howard Scott Warshaw talk about E.T. and he admitted he never had seen the movie Steven Spielberg was supposed to check on the game during development which he apparently didn't care to do saying yeah whatever that looks good which turned into the E.T. Atari game we have now, so it was really kinda of Steven Spielberg fault for the game being a confusing mess

Kingsman had two games on its website, one where you use your mouse to follow Harry's movements during the pub fight and another where you had to find Valentine in a crowd and report back to Arthur. It scored you on how well you did, deeming you as Kingsman material if you did well on the game, and after finishing both games you could download wallpapers of some of the main characters. I think the "Become a Kingsman" thing is pretty fun, and I play it when I'm bored and reminded Kingsman 2 is still ten months away.

My own favorite "move-to-game adaptation everyone forgets" is that there were not one but TWO conversions of "Labyrinth" no one has ever heard about. One was a top-down NES game that never got released outside Japan, and the other was actually one of the very first adventure games LucasArts released, even before Maniac Mansion. And they hired Douglas Adams to help with the design, which is why (like Adams' other adventure games) it's so insanely convoluted no one ever finished it.

I'm tired of seeing ET at the top of "worst game ever" lists as well. The game is not fun, it's a chore to sit through, those pits are annoying, and the game is very confusing without a manual. But you know what? It's playable, and can be beaten. It's crap, but it's complete. Can't say that about other games that don't get nearly as much heat. Anyway, another great episode, Larry. It seems like most people put it at the top of the list having not played it, then blame it for causing the 1983 videogame crash - you know, instead of Pac Man on Atari, or the general flood of low-quality software that was on the market at the time. It wasn't factual in 2013, it's not factual now. Bonus points if the article is by a European publication, talking about how videogames died from a continent where there _wasn't_ a crash; it affected North America, since Atari was popular there, but Europe went largely unaffected by the whole thing.

ET isn't even THAT bad Don't get me wrong, it's not exactly good, and it was importantly bad for its time, but I honestly wouldn't put ET as worse than, like, Ride to Hell or more recent junk like that. ET is a genuinely bad game, but it's one that certainly isn't as bad as people who say it is, and from a strict gameplay perspective, is not even close to the worst game of all time. Hell, it's not even the worst Atari 2600 game--Pac Man was pretty fucking horrid too, you know.

BlackJackel12 I think that's what I was going for when I said "important for its time". That said, while you're 100% correct, I still try to look at things in a more modern context, and given that I really don't think it was much worse than plenty of other Atari games.

as a game programmer I found that one to be truly hilarious, today is way harder to slip something like that in a game (or at least a AAA game) and would probably get you fired faster than saying "work-life balance"

I freaking love that movie. Also, is it just me or am I the only one who thought the original 80's dub is butter than the one released later? The 80's one is really cheesy, but in that good way, and the actors knew how to put emotion into their lines. Truly one of my favorite anime dubs, even if it might just be a guilty pleasure.

Is it awful that this is the first time I've ever heard of AKIRA? (The answer is yes.) I immediately went and watched the version uploaded to RU-vid, although I would have rather seen a subbed version than dubbed. I'll have to check out the manga some other time; 2,000 pages is a little intimidating.

AWESOME. It left such an impression on me. If my own games are successful enough, I want to look into getting the AKIRA license. You're absolutely right, it deserves a great video game.

Not yet, but it's definitely on my to-watch list. Which also now includes Suburban Commando, because I made the mistake of bringing up this video with my boss, who apparently not only loves pro wrestling, but games based on movies, TV shows, etc. So we spent a good ten minutes talking about it all. On that note, apparently he is not a very discerning gamer, as he thought games like Home Improvement on the SNES and Alf on the Genesis were good.

@Larry

Possibly, putting E.T. at number 1 is just lazy in 2016.

Title's a bit misleading, to be honest. First entry, and it's already more "5 movies You Never Knew Had Video Games (on a specific console)". Oh well, not like I wouldn't enjoy it either way.

Yep. First one totally negates the title as he explains we all know BTTF has a game. Doesn't matter really, unless you aren't a regular viewer and you just really wanted to see the particular list as titled.

One of my best memories of yester year was ordering Amstrad games on cassettes from my sisters video club via the mail. I remember getting the game of the film Platoon. It's box contained a tape of Smokey Robinson singing "Tracks of my tears" and a "photo" of the boys in Nam. I loved film tie ins and always had hope that they related in some small way to the actual film. I also had Indianna Jones and The Temple of Doom but don't remember much about it besides the mine cart levels. Anyway, another great video Larry. Loved it pal. All the best.

I love these videos btw, they're so detailed and choc full of very interesting and often mindblowing information :) Don't suppose you could do on regarding Mortal Kombat 1 (for the arcades, sega and snes) could you? I've tried everything but I just can't figure out why they designed 'The Pit' and how they got their inspiration for it. I already know so much about the games but I'll be you could dish out so much more nobody ever knew or realised :)
