Hi Shelly, you look so pretty with the bling ear hoops and the shirt you wearing as well as your hair cut looks really good 😊. Dermelect Sleep and Glow Serum is a Cult Fav. I’ve purchased a few of the products, must say I’m not that impressed, especially at their prices. That’s me, I depend on my Sugar Scrubs weekly for Body exfoliation and then apply Gold Bond Retinol Moisturizer and loving the results. I also use the Alpha 12% Glycolic moisturizer, especially after I shave. You kind of got some bummers in your Ipsy boxes. Would have been great to have seen the products. Aww, you didn’t show the liquid lip product 😢. lol hopefully you will use it in an upcoming video. Love when you go thru the ingredient deck and explain each. My fave body scrub is Himalayan Salt Scrub. It’s a bit abrasive, so I have to be a bit gentle. Aww, thank you for a great video. As always. Be safe, have a great rest of your week and wkend.

I love these ingredient deep dives! You have so much knowledge Shelly! 💖How I use a scrub is, before I get in the shower, I scoop some out on the cap of the scrub and bring that in the shower with me. This is because most scrubs are in a tub.... and I'm a klutz. When (not if) I drop the tub, there goes the product! Awwwww Ziva! I was wondering where she was, then she showed up! I love your videos, your personality. I also get glam bag and boxy charm, I love these kinds of videos from you since you know how to navigate the ingredients and whatnot. PS I wish I could come be your boss. But then that may be bad, we would talk beauty shop maybe a bit too much. Anyway, I would love for you to check out Christina Moss facial moisturizer (its the one with the blue label, not the one that is fragrance free). I have been using it for years, the only thing that really, really feels like it moisturizes!! I would love to hear your thoughts and insight on it!!

I'm pretty sure that the "influencer" packages aren't customized to a profile (thus why I get a lot of oily skin things or warm tones that I would never put in my profile). 🤣 And from what I can tell from other people's videos that get the boxes as PR, we all seem to get the same stuff.

One thing I've learned is that the ingredients in a given item are not the whole story. It's the formulation, the combination of certain percentages of ingredients, that makes the difference. One person's body chemistry can be totally different than everyone else's. And any skin scrub or wash product meant. to be used in the shower MUST be in a squeeze tube or pump bottle. Period. Thanks so much for your attention to detail, Shelly! I'd love to have you as my professor!

The formulation is definitely key!! That's part of why I don't swear off of things like denatured alcohol, because in a proper formulation, potential drying effects can be negated if the formulator cared to do so, and it does serve a purpose when used with that intention. I recently formulated a foot balm that is anhydrous so it doesn't necessarily require a preservative, but personally when I use a foot balm, I do so right after I get out of the shower and am just towel-dried and I tend to rub them directly on my feet - so I very well could introduce moisture to the product. So I do preserve it in case it comes in contact with water, because even incidental contact could become a breeding ground for yuck. If I ever do make anything unpreserved, it will be packaged in a squeeze tube or pump or something that wouldn't allow direct contact with the product for application. Ahhhh I'm so glad you all nerd out over this stuff with me!!! I find it all fascinating.

I've been testing out a variety of natural preservatives through the skin care formulation program I just completed, but so far the most effective one isn't available for purchase in small business sized quantities (I was able to get a sample from the manufacturer but they don't sell in quantities small enough for me to afford, and I have not found any distributors that repackage it in smaller quantities), and I really can't gamble with effectiveness. The other widely used non-natural preservative (trade name Liquid Germall Plus) is banned in the EU for leave-on products (like lotions, creams, serums etc), and with their standards being more strict than those in the US, I tend to follow their guidelines. I'm not a big fan of phenoxyethanol (thus trying to find other options), but it's the most reliable non-banned option that I have access to right now. I do hope to find other options that work with my formulas!

In general, for any product that is in an open jar or tub style packaging, using a scooper/spoon/spatula to get the product out is a great way to avoid contaminating the product with germs. (Washing hands prior to scooping anything out with your hands would be a good next-best). It's also best to store it however the manufacturer recommends (often it's not great to store things in the bathroom due to humidity fluctuations, for example). That said, I am constantly using my grubby paws to scoop my lotions and scrubs out of their jars, and I store all of my skin care routine in my bathroom 🤣 which is where preservatives come in. If something is properly preserved, even if you do introduce bacteria by scooping something out with your hands, the preservative should prevent growth, assuming it's an effective preservative against whatever is contaminating it. But not all preservatives are the same. Even ones that claim to be broad spectrum don't always cover everything like gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, molds, etc. If a product ever seems off - you see something growing in it or it smells bad or unexpected discoloration is happening - I usually toss it. Contaminated beauty products can have all kinds of awful effects, from just basic irritation to major issues - one of the worst stories I've seen was blindness caused by improperly preserved and contaminated mascara.
