2: You can install codecs by going to the start menu>Sound and Video and selecting Install Multimedia codecs. 3: Synaptic is installed by default 5: Configuring the sources mirror should be the first thing that is done, then doing updates 6 Configuring drivers should be the next thing to do after updating 12: I have never seen one of these windows, my system never crashes

@@Vercusgames Installing multimedia codecs from the menu was even on Mint 20 Software sources and driver manager was in Mint 20 as well Heck when you first open Update manager you get a message about selecting more local mirrors. The Mint Welcome mentions using driver manager I never had any issues in Mint 19 nor Mint 20 when it came to crashes It could be hardware specific. I know in Mint 20 my laptops keyboard did not work on a cold boot, but did work on a reboot. I had to add a Kernel parameter to fix the issue, but since Mint21, no issues.

Hmm, I never installed synaptic package manager but have it installed already. I just did a fresh install on a laptop and it already had it as well. Also if you hit the checkbox when installing Linux Mint the codecs are already installed too. Swappiness setting most likely isn't needed at all. If you have decent ram swap isn't used and swap is needed if you don't, I monitor my usage constantly and even though I have a swap file it never gets used with no change to settings. flatpak is also installed by default. So that is 4 things you most likely do not have to do. vim is NOT installed by default, you should have used nano in your example as the command won't work for anyone trying this without first installing vim. Umm, changing GRUB_DEFAULT isn't accomplishing anything to speed up boot time. It is the default selection in the grub menu for dual boot systems. 10 would pick the 10th option, 0 would pick the 1st option. There is still a timeout. GRUB_TIMEOUT is the time to wait and if you set it to 0 then it 'should' boot immediately with the GRUB_DEFAULT choice. It will also totally ruin a newbie's day trying to figure out why he can't boot to his 2nd OS since you didn't mention anything about that. I also said 'should' in that last statement because my personal settings are GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 and it still gives me 5 or 10 seconds before automatically going with the default choice. Anyway, that could be a big deal for some people who don't know what they are changing, so if you suggest that, I would explain what it is. Not a criticism here, htop is fine, but I prefer bpytop. It is just better and provides more info. The xkill shortcut is very helpful though. Easier than doing it through bpytop or terminal. Thanks for that tip.

You don't do "apt-get upgrade" in LM you do "mintupdate-cli upgrade". You should hit that multimedia codecs option during installation.

I work for a copier company and I have to read PDF's for part numbers. With mint the part numbers are blocked out and I can't read it. Is there a fix for that?
