I love the sound of the contrabassoon, deep, mellow; a soft boom. Adds a nice round bass, feels absolutely right. The quartet with the contra sounds absolutely pleasing, comes through the subwoofers really nice ;D

To those unfamiliar with jazz lore: There are 4 recordings that are so influential as to become "Excaliburs," or litmus tests, for any heir apparent (no guarantees of rewards--or even gigs): 1. "West End Blues," Louis Armstrong, 1928; 2. "Body and Soul," Coleman Hawkins, 1939; 3. "Donna Lee," Charlie Parker (or Miles Davis, though it's doubtful he ever played it), circa 1948; 4. "Giant Steps," John Coltrane, 1959. Jazz is not an amateur sport (though even Coltrane at the end--1966-67, or AFTER "A Love Supreme"--appeared to mistake rapturous sonic effusions for art). It requires many hours of rigorous practice to learn the "language" of the music along with its canon of seminal works. Once there, you're ready to create your own "meanings" with that language while developing a "voice" that is uniquely your own.
