I think they are slowly pushing their members to help direct/edit videos. Some of their members have shown interest in it and are helping out. They have their own reality show called Going Seventeen. So recently, they’ve started discussing and coming up with the contents for the show themselves. They even made the intro song for the show and directed the opening shot themselves.

Also, Pledis Entertainment is very lucky to have Seventeen. They are very bad at managing their idols but they have so many talented people in the label. If Seventeen weren’t self producing idols, I can see Pledis failing to bring them to success because of their poor management.

이번 곡은 세븐틴의 가장 어두운 부분을 표현한 곡이라고 해요. 독:fear은 자신들이 가진 두려움에 갇힌 이야기에요. 제 개인적인 해석입니다만, 현실이나 미래에 대한 두려움이나 과거의 상처에 사랑하는 사람을 끌어들이고 싶지 않은 마음과 그럼에도 곁에 있어줬으면 하는 마음이 부딪치는 것 같아요. 진심을 사랑이라한다면 진실은 자신들이 처한 현실을, 자신을 독이라고 말하는 건 자신의 두려움과 상처가 너를 힘들게 할 것이기에 내게서 멀어지고 기억마저 지워달라는 것이고요. 안무도 독을 들이키는 듯한 모습이 많이 나오는데 두려움을 들이키고 거기에 갇힌 걸 표현한 게 아닐까합니다.

세븐틴이 자체제작을 시작한 이유는 소속사에서 하도 데뷔를 안시켜줘서 이거라도 하면 데뷔시켜주지 않을까 하는 마음이었다고 합니다 ㅠㅠ 지금 와서 보면 그게 정체성이고 장점이지만, 시작한 계기를 들으면 기약없는 데뷔를 기다렸던 연습생 시절의 세븐틴이 떠올라서 씁쓸해지기도 하네요

뮤비는 감독님이 하십니다ㅎㅎ 자체제작하는 부분은 모든 곡과 안무입니다. 세븐틴의 모든 앨범은 기획하고 구성하는 부분도 멤버들이 먼저 자신들이 담고싶은 이야기를 정하고 소속사분들이 함께 회의하고 제작합니다. 노래는 우지가 메인으로 세븐틴 멤버들 범주님, 프리즘필터분들이 작사, 작곡, 프로듀싱합니다. 안무는 호시를 메인으로 디노, 디에잇, 준 퍼포먼스유닛과 안무가분들이 함께 만들어요. 또 콘서트 같은 걸 할때도 곡구성이나 테마에 멤버들이 소속사분들과 같이 회의해서 정해집니다.

If I'm not remember it wrong, this song is about them encounter the emotion of fear when on the road of creating music.

그냥 가사를 보고 생각하는걸 좋아해서 어디까지나 저의 느낌과 해석이지만 내 진심보다 날카로운 진실이 더 중요해 라는 부분에서 내 진심이라는 부분은 상대를 사랑하고 지금 이 사랑이 영원하고 싶다는 걸 의미하고 진실은 하지만 영원한건 절대로 없고 내가 널 사랑하는 이 마음이 오히려 너를 상처입히고 있다는 의미가 아닐까 해요. 그리고 동시에 상처가 많고 고독하고 두려움에 가득차있는 나이기 때문에 나와 함께 있으면 이 고독과 상처 그리고 두려움이 너에게도 스며들것이다 라는 것이 진실이기 때문에 넌 나에게서 벗어나야한다고 하는게 아닐까 합니다. 그리고 '겁이나 깨지못해 또 거짓말해 내 기억마저 물들고 있어' 이부분을 보면 나는 여전히 상대를 너무나 사랑하고, 이 사랑이 영원할거라고 믿는 환상속에서 깨어나고 싶지 않기때문에 우린 전혀 문제가 없고 두렵지 않고 이 사랑이 영원할것이라고 계속해서 거짓말을 하고있는 자신이 존재하고 동시에 그러한 사랑과 믿음이 자신의 진심이며 계속된 거짓말로 기억마저 물들고 있다로 표현한게 아닐까 생각이 듭니다. 2절로 들가면 '내 진심은 왜 진실을 외면하는 건가' 라는 부분도 같은 맥락이 아닐까 생각해봅다. 그게 2절의 랩부분로 연결될 때는 이제는 우리는 영원할 수 없고 내가 상대를 상처입힌다는 진실이 나를 속박해 버려서 순수한 진심(사랑) 역시 독(두려움)에 물들고 있어서 나로 인해 너도 이런 두려움을 느낄까 무섭다 이런 내용이 되는게 아닐까 하고 생각해봤습니다.

독이라는 노래는 1:55초에 나오는 멤버 우지가 프로듀싱을 담당해 곡을 만드는데 이 독이라는 노래를 만들 당시 자신감과 동시에 두려움이 마음 한구석에 마치 ‘독’ 처럼 자리잡고 있었고 더 멋있고 더 완벽하고 더 당당하게 음악을 팬들에게 들려주고 싶었던게 욕심이 차올라 독이 된거 같다고 하더라고요. 이렇게 리액션해주셔서 감사합니다 :)

Love your question: why do they self-produce? It's because Woozi learned to write and compose songs with Bumzu during trainee days. Also, I think since Pledis Ent. was on the brink of bankruptcy back then so they did not really have money to pay outside producers to write songs for them. Gladly, Woozi and the members have really developed their music production skills so they agreed not to "borrow" songs from someone else because they want to be authentic to their music. :)

From what i catch up.. It's a love song where someone love someone but there's something that they afraid to show (poison), so even tho the truth he/she loves them and although it's hard to let go but they have to tell their partner to stay away for your own good. Since they're afraid (fear) to hurt (poison) their beloved one.

thank you for reacting!! i appreciated your thoughts and explanations on what you felt!! i think self-producing was probably bc they liked it, and also bc of bad management from pled is, so if the company would not promote well, they would do it themselves. for the mv, the director is the same as from hit and chungha's snapping video, but I felt like the individual members shared their own version of fear and it was reflected on set in the mv. but directing-wise, they are also starting to branch out like in going seventeen like Luft said!!

I think it's about the fear seventeen members are facing now, they are worrying if their worries (poison) will get to us who love them. The fear they are facing now maybe about time is passing( they are getting older), their performances and etc as you can see there was a 'destroyed' stage setting with only 12 mics. they are self-produced because pledis was so broke back then. Well they definitely write and produce their own music with help of Bumzu, they also choreograph their dances. And what does their company do? I think other than let them make albums then it's dragging them. Pledis seriously can't keep up with the growth of seventeen. Member Seungkwan has to get TV shows himself!
