I'm amazed at how such a great stick welder can be made so compact.

I'm a welding student and i bought this machine to practice on. Very nice for the price and like Bob said it runs pretty hot. I run 1/8 7018 at 90 amps compared to the 115 -120 I run on the Lincolns at school. Lots of power in this little box.

There’s a lot of very good welding instruction on RU-vid with priceless content. I do like Jody, Chucke2009, and the Fabrication series too and have learned a lot from them, but as a teacher, you deserve a Nobel aureate. I’m new to TIG and still a novice but thanks to videos like this I’m improving every day. Thank you.

I've had this unit for months and use the hell out of it. I've ran it for days and it's never let me down. The only problem is the readout is dead wrong, Bob even says so. I keep a notepad beside it for all my sweet spots and live with it for this price point.
@jockellis
@jockellis 6 лет назад
Seth Ward My instructor at Lanier Tech tells me that in the old days every welder would have a mark on the welder for their sweet spot. My instructor found that 72 amps was best for the Radnor rods and 74 for Millenniums.

I got my 200ST from Weld.com. The trick to getting it running right is welding in TIG mode. The arc in Stick mode will dig so hard in vertical that it’s impossible to make any kind of weld. When you move to TIG mode it disables the hot start and arc force that are preset in the computer. On TIG mode it runs 6010-6011 like a charm and 7018 like a dream. The only time I use Stick mode is when I’m making 1F welds on really thick material that’s needs that deep dig into the base metal. Good video Bob, I hope you do one in a groove in vertical.
@tombayt7491
@tombayt7491 6 лет назад
I was doing the same thing until I realized that the problem was that the display is way off. The actual current is about 1 1/2 times what is shown. Once I started making the correct adjustments my problems want away and I went back to stick mode.
@danielmcconnell1096
@danielmcconnell1096 6 лет назад
Tom Bayt that’s interesting! Thats the one thing I haven’t tried. Instead of running on 85 Amps for 6010 I’ll turn it down to 45 Amps and instead 115 amps for 7018 I’ll turn that down to 60 amps and try that on stick mode. Very interesting. Maybe it won’t dig so hard.
@MarkDecamps
@MarkDecamps 6 лет назад
The Amps displayed is way off on mine too. I confirmed this with a clamp on meter. Everlast tech support tried to blame it on arc force, but that's not correct on a CC machine. They just didn't have a fix for it I'm thinking.

Mark Decamps can you give us a ratio of the actual current mine does the same thing, I would really appreciate it
@MarkDecamps

Victor Padilla It's approximarely one rod size off...for example 80-90 amps on the display for an 1/8" 7018.

That little inverter machine you using Bob is really neat. I been looking at getting one for a few weeks for practicing 6010 and 7018 on open groove plate and pipe joints. Maybe even set up a scratch start DC Tig outfit and see how it does for on 6G 2 inch pipe. Thank you weld.com and Bob Moffat for reviewing this cool machine. I am going to have to buy myself an early Christmas present. Ha ha

I had turned my 200 ST down to 87 to run Radnor 1/8” 7018 but Thursday, I took it to the tech school where I’m n my second semester and my instructor, a 32-year union man, started welding with it and had me keep turning it down to 72 amps. He then got our Millennium rods and found that they worked best at 74. He brought a couple of 5/32” 7018s and had the machine turning out beautiful beads at 105 amps. He told me I had a fine welder.

@jockellis
@jockellis 6 лет назад
Juan Zavala Sorry, I just saw this. Once you figure out the amperage you need everything is fine. If you are not a pro, you would probably be better off finding one and have him weld with it for a proper opinion
@gordjohnson70
@gordjohnson70 5 лет назад
Let the accountants worry about #'s. Just find the "happy place" on the dial and weld. The #'s on any machine are just a place to start. From there you can fine tune it, like you would fine tune a radio to get the best signal.

I have it and I tried it with a multimeter, in stick mode it delivers 30 amps over what the screen says, up to 45 with a short arc, but this only with 7018, with 6011 and 6013 are 15 to 20 more and up to 35 with a short arc, yes, I tried it several times and the result was always like this, in TIG mode the screen corresponds to the multimeter.

Nice demo. Like one person commented about a clamp on amp meter, maybe it would be a good idea to use the proper amp meter on your demos just to see how accurate the readout on the welders you are using is. Maybe in both 110 and 220V input and both AC & DC output depending on what the machine is made or set for. Thanks, Ed K. Cleve. Oh.

I have one, the stick mode is trash. I do everything in Tig mode. Even 6010. Actually me and a buddy built him a new welding bed with it off 110v with 6010 because we were in a residential area and didn't want the neighbors to call in noise complaints. Initially I was disapointed but I've adapted to it.

I have the first gen of this machine (minus the "ST") which does stick only. I like it, and it seems durable. (As a hobbiest, I've put in probably 20 hrs of arc time over several years.) BUT when I run 1/8" 7018 it seems to need 150A. I would probably short sell Miller, if it was a pure play. I always run it off 240VAC.

Bob I absolutely love your videos and have learned quite a bit from you. I have one small issue when you review machines and it’s also a video request. You need to do some low end work during reviews. Some of these machines are great mid to high end machines when it comes to power settings but are absolutely hard to run down low such as welding sheet metal body panels. Otherwise keep up the great work

Read the manual. You might not have the cables in the right connectors. Kevon Caron did that in his " AHP 160 vs Everlast 160 stick/Tig Welders" video. For 6010 the ground wire should go in the 6010 slot. He hooked the stinger in there and it ran like crap.
@chrisdoeg5199
@chrisdoeg5199 6 лет назад
I run it on 220v, with the ground on the 6010 port. I am a tight arc holder anyways so there is no issue there. I can feel the flux burning of against the patent metal I’m that close. I can run 6010 on a Lincoln idealarc with no issues keeping everything the same.
@gordjohnson70

I’m sorta narrowing my choices. I want to learn stick, have mostly small self projects. I was leaning towards the esab 180 ($600), someone suggested the everlasting 200. Can I get your opinion on which one you think is the best at the $400-$700 range? Thinking they’re all good, but your opinion, the very best. Esab rogue 180,,,,, everlast 200,,,,, Lincoln (don’t know equivalent model),,,,,, Miller thunderbolt 160,,,,,, Miller thunderbolt 180 I’ve seen you use a lot of them, your opinion would help a lot. Thanks! Seen vids on the esab rebel and the fronius transpocket 180. Those two seem above all at the $1200 range, problem is ...the $1200! I was leaning towards the rogue and everlast. @georgewashington1106 5 лет назад
I'm looking at the Titanium 225 on Harbor Freight's website and it retails for $280. I got my 200ST for $400....$120 difference. The Everlast has a 5 year warranty. Harbor Freight's website says the Titanium has a 90 day warranty. I'm sure there is an extended warranty, generally 1 or 2 years at HF, and generally about 15% of the item price. So...Everlast, $400, 5 year warranty, digital readout with variable adjustable dial, and it can do TIG. Titanium, $322 +/- with maybe a 2 year warranty (probably 1), no digital readout (so your just guessing), and no TIG.

@danielmcconnell1096
@danielmcconnell1096 6 лет назад
In stick mode on the 6010 port it has to have a super close arc length. It’s very weird because it goes against normal training with fast freeze electrode that you should hold a medium length arc and make persistent whips. With this machine in stick mode it requires a arc length of near touching the base metal with little slight whips. It however doesn’t hump up like it normally would on a transformer buzz box type machine it lays out smooth. That’s the big quirk to doing fast freeze rod on it. You decrease the voltage when you run a tight arc length and most lower end inverters don’t have the capacity to run that higher voltage with a longer arc length.

i don't understand why America uses 120 v as their standard power supply when most of the world use 230 v. Most of the world would have no trouble running a welder at 200 amps of a standard wall outlet.

110 most people buying this machine will never run it on 220v? this demo should not have been done in 220, someone buying a 300 dollar machine dosent have a 220v outlet most!

Cup Walker I run a 220 plug from the dryer outlet to the garage. the 110 is only useful when I have to bring the thing with me. Still want to wire 220 plug from the panel to the garage itself

Cup Walker I do but I was lucky in that the man across the street is the project manager for an electrical company. His mom and my wife are buddies so he didn’t charge a dime. It still cost me $144 for supplies at HD.
