Finally! A golf coach that doesn't add useless minutes of verbal-waterboarding to the tutorial... Most coaches (even great ones) add 17 useless minutes talking about irrelevant chatter to a 7 minute training - so frustrating! I'm following this channel for sure! Great video, Coach!
This is the clearest I've seen this presented regarding the idea of pushing down with the left pad to get wrist cock and keep left arm straight. I'm going to give this a try at my next range session. thanks
I CANNOT keep my left arm straight! I'm getting very frustrated. Even without a club, I can't do it. Please, I need your help! If I was rich I would ask for a private lesson, what should I do?
THE SECRET of pushing on the left hand thumb with the right hand to push the grip away to keep the left arm straight--Great advise I have never heard before after years of looking ---club head speed exploded for me today==Thanks
Adam, another great tip. I see so many players try to "throw" the club head away from them during the take away, rather than "push" the grip end toward the ground. I also think there are quite a few instructors that teach the wrong way to start the take away. You hit the nail on the head (as always). I also like how you address players who might not be as flexible as we once were. Brilliant.
I wished I knew this a long time ago. Great job of explaining it, I have a bad back and that actually even helps my back out. Wow, what a great teacher you are.
Wow! I've watched hundreds of videos on the backswing, but this is the first one that has made such a clear connection between how a proper wrist cock actually helps to keep the lead arm straight. This has been a real eyeopener for me. Thank you, Adam. Well done!
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago. YOU have my vote for Instructor of the Year! I am a 18 handicap and have averaged over 90 all year this year. After watching your video and keeping my left arm straight, my last two rounds were 85 (last week) and 76 (today). I hit 9 of 14 fairways and 12 of 18 greens in regulation. Thank you so much for adding joy to my favorite game. Now I need to work on my putting. Out of 12 GIRs, I only converted 3 to birdies and 8 to pars. I will study your putting instruction videos.
Excellent video Adam on How To Keep The Left Arm Straight In The Golf Swing! I like your explanation of how "pushing down the butt end of the handle with your left hand" not only straightens the left arm but produces necessary wrist hinge. Well Done Adam! I have archived this video!!!
Yes, this was very helpful, I am thankful, good easy explanation for a senior. For some reason, this video has been the topping to all the other golf videos I watch, because there are so many perfect swings people are showing on here , you tube.
Yeah, my problem is certainly flexibility. Spent the first part of my 20's always weightlifting, so I have a bodybuilder build. My left arm actually pushes into my chest on the backswing, do I just need to stretch and work on flexibility? I feel like my build hinders me...
That was the magic feeling I was missing, feeling the club create a wider arc by pushing out on the butt. This also feels more powerful, controlled and the same every time. Thank You So Much!
Adam, Thank you for content. My question is in watching your left wrist it looks bent and not flat. I love watching the beat players' swings. John Rahm and Justin Johnson flatl from the beginning. In minimizing variables, what are your thoughts. Thank you.
Thanks Marc. Rahm and Johnson are great, but I’m not a fan of the bowed look in the backswing. I have a video at this channel about keeping the wrist flat, hope it’s helpful
I've been playing golf for ~50 years. The straight left arm always made sense to me, but I could never incorporate it into my game. For me, it was just too uncomfortable. I came across something this week (accidentally) that changed my golfing life and golf swing. It's this: Instead of trying to keep a straight left arm all the way going back in the backswing, I let my left arm straighten at the end of my backswing. And that's the only time, besides the beginning of the swing when my arm is straight. This little tweak has dramatically changed my swing and made me more consistent and straight.
I am not concerned about the straight left arm on the back,my problem is the left arm collapsing / folding before impact on the down swing again not the back swing but the down swing !!
Ernie Els won 4 majors with a rigid and hyperextended left arm. I agree that if a person lacks flexibility a little softening of the left arm is fine. Best, Adam
Watson bent his lead arm to create additional width in his swing but he does go substantially past parallel in the process. I think he still would have been a great ball striker if he stopped short of parallel.
Awesome tip, you are a great teacher. Your video on how to hit the ball without striking it fat has helped me more than any other tip! Hands pass ball 1st. That and lag really have done wonders. Thanks
I I think we are saying that you push down on the handle with the left hand with left hand and and when club parallel you apply pressure with the butt of the right hand against the left thumb also you seem to indicate that at the top you don't have your back to the target but that you have a shorter backswing is it necessary to have you back to the target at the top let me know thanks Jack
Agree -- most say they have the solution then drag you thru an endless video where you have to fideo to another video -- then another and more blah blah blah
Best golf tip ever on how to have a straight left arm in the backswing. For years, I've tried to push away with my right arm to straighten my left with no success. Pushing that fat pad in the left hand down on the takeaway is a miracle worker. I ripped the ball. For example, on hole number 6, I drove the ball 265 yards on to the green and the putt was for an eagle which I missed! The next lesson will be putting!
I have the habit also bend my arms both especially left at a 45° angle. I do this so badly I actually pulled an already injured pec muscle. Look with one watch from you Adam it's my wrist that I missing the basics. I'm a rookie so not even ashamed I injured myself. I'll keep watching I appreciate you and your craft.
Ben Hogan's book was instrumental in changing my swing, obviously for the better and the first thing you talked about was his book and the grip. Awesome video and can't wait to see more. I just subscribed. Thank you!!
Locking out my lead arm helps and my wrists stay supple. I turn around my spine by pulling in my right shoulder blade to my spine while maintain that straight lead arm. I’m a range pro but also a 22 handicap.
The key is the straighter left arm. I was breaking it. The club facing the sky is not a problem. It will Automatically bend a little on its own. Thank you for the great video. Well explained.
YOOO THANK YOU SO MUCH. This just changed my game completely, I literally just added about 30 yards to every club and improved my ball striking immediately. Blows my mind that nobody has caught this before for me, thank you!
I'm not able to raise my arms vertically inline with my head, I think me trying to do a longer back swing is causing injury. I've had problems with my left rotator cuff/lat muscles. What would you suggest for someone who struggles with shoulder mobility
Hi Keith, I struggled with a rotator cuff injury that wouldn’t go away. Then I started swimming and it was fixed in 3 months. Swimming is also excellent for my golf swing as it turns out.
Less of wrist cock the better a straight shot . Lead arm straight and trail arm follow . Keep wrists uncork is way better for consistency . Secret is the lead shoulder turn to touch your nose for fuller turn .in the backswing the lead leg ankle lift for power.
Your channel and instruction style are awesome! You give gold and you give it quickly! Watching your videos is truly a joy. Thanks for taking the time to help us with our game. 👍😎
Hi Adam. Another good training video. I have a question. I noticed that when you're gripping the handle, there is a sizable gap between your finger-tips and the thumb pad. The old school of thought was that the tips should just touch the pad or very close to it. Is your grip oversized for a reason?
Just got round to watching this and have to say it is the best description of how to cock the wrists properly in the backswing that I have come across in all my years of golf. Many thanks
Thanks 😊 I definitely hit the ball better when I keep my left arm fairly straight. It doesn’t come natural to me because I’ve played so many years bending my left arm. It’s a game changer. 😊 Gracias
I’ve been working really hard this past year to actually take the game seriously and not just go and drink and drive a cart. Enjoying the game even more now since I’m being more consistent. I will say I’m aiming to have a “textbook” definition swing and way to hard headed to accept anything other then that lol. Thank you for sharing your lessons and keeping them straight to the point
Thanks Nicholas, and hope you make progress. I’m doing some Mini schools on the road this summer. If it’s of any interest feel free to reach out through adambgolf.com Thanks, Adam
My father-in-law always said i have lazy hands. I never was really able to feel-understand the wrist cock. THis video did it for me. First range session of the year I had great strikes. Irons were in the words of John Sterling (Yankee announcer)..... it is high, it is far, it is gone!
Is there any reason I can’t hinge the wrists/push on the butt of the club shortly after my takeaway? It’s something I’ve been doing to keep the club head above my hands and it helps me keep my left arm straight. I’m very tall and thin and that left arm wants to bend, the only thing I’ve found that helps me to have a consistently straight left arm is by pushing on the butt of the club shortly after my takeaway, it’s almost blended with my takeaway, at a minimum it’s definitely before the shaft is ever parallel with the ground. I don’t bring the club in from the inside in order to do it, it just feels like it helps my swing be more repeatable. Thanks.
Great tips! Thank you. I find it so hard to keep my left arm stiff and straight without making the rest of me get all stiff and straight as well. Have to practice these drills.
John Mc Dade -Excellent as usual, BUT I have restriced movement of my wrists bending them back is a struggle, not sure if it was caused by soccer injuries but any advice on how I could improve that aspect of my flexibility. I did play off 5 handicap for many years and had good length, but I struggle to get much longer nowadays.
If your left arm is straight when the club reaches ground parallel, it'll stay straight by turning your chest away from the target & not letting your arms move independently. If you allow your arms to swing without using your torso, the arm will never stay straight.
Wow!! The idea of telling your top hand to push the grip away instead of focusing on the club head is amazing!! I can actually do this without any strain!
@@Scratchgolfacademy Woods doesn’t keep his left arm straight. Ernie Els was like double jointed or something. the old players didn’t know any better. That’s why Nicholas started beating all those guys because he didn’t. It shortens the arc Not only that if you force the left arm straight it puts tension in the arm . And that will most definitely move the swing plane. The player will have to compensate
Superior golf tutorial. I've watched numerous golf tutorial videos, but hands down yours is the best. I recently subscribed to your channel and now watch it exclusively.
I don't see how you could have made my understanding of this concept easier. Sure, others have said to do certain things. But, none seemed to have made it so simple. Thank you.
Could you please show how to do this with a strong grip and bowed wrist, rather than a cupped wrist please. Is there a particular golfer's swing I could see.
I don't see many top players with strong grips then bowed wrist at the top of the backswing, the face would get very shut. Either way the principles would stay generally the same. Get in front of a mirror, you'll find a feel. Best, Adam
Question on left arm.. (and 'keeping club in front of body') with the driver. Should the impact position of the left arm be closer to the body than at address? i.e. without throwing the club, should the objective be to get that hands unit further away from your thighs at impact, or closer?
Left arm straight might work for some people, but not me. It introduces too much tension and takes away too much control. I prefer keeping things loose and letting centrifugal force straighten the arm during the downswing.
Hi Adam thanks for the video. My question is I don’t have a problem keeping my arm straight in the back swing but it starts to bend in the down swing I’ve tried everything to keep it straight but it bends a little and influences how constantly I hit the ball. What can I do to stop this please
Thats awesome man..i mean mine is richardson..very plain..lol..ive been learning a lot from your content! Just getting back into golf after a 20 year hiatus.. I enjoy your style and instruction..its great stuff!
Yes, to the point! Already improved by the pushing the left wrist into the club to start the hinge -- much better feel and keeps the left arm straight. Thank You!
Thanks so much. Quick question. Many teach a flat left wrist position at the top of the backswing. This pushing down on the handle on the way back seems to leave a cupped wrist at the top. Should I worry about that ?
Never heard push the handle away to cock but it makes perfect sense. I’ve always had an issue with lack of risk cock and a collapsing trail arm. Thanks so much!!
I known this is an older video but I have tried this over the last week and it has been amazing. I have added 30 metres to driver and woods and am now able to compress my irons more frequently. I have plenty of work to do however this has helped enormously. I never had the correct feeling associated with cocking my wrist until now. Thank you 🎉
My problem seems to be the downswing. I take the club back with good lower body rotation but my right arm is too close on my downswing robbing me of width and speed. Any videos for this? Thx
Great video Adam, this was a doubt I had for the longest time about the right arm (I'm a left handed golfer) bend that I have and that pushing the heel of the club trick was fantastic. Does the slight bend have a significant impact?
Thanks Suresh. A slight bend in the lead arm is OK, ideally the energy transferring out to club through impact would straighten it out at that point. Best, Adam
My wife and I are about to golf for the first time in our life, so we need all the help we can get. We have taken four lessons and were never told about the straight left arm, thanks.
very pleased to see this video. I believe this is the single most important tip for a correct swing. The wrist bends toward the bottom of the arm as the left arm is kept straight.
