🔥Rhythm Riffin’ On ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’🔥
‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ is one of the ‘Great American Songbook’ standards that Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club De France reinvented with their famous 1938 London recording.
It’s been a staple of the Hot Club and Gypsy Jazz repertoire ever since and is always an audience pleaser. In other words a good one to know!
In this solo guitar version I composed a single chorus of Rhythm Rifiin’ which uses the chord sequence of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ with some added embellishments and twists.
I designed it to be Fun, Exciting & most of all a tribute to our hero Django Reinhardt!
By learning this short piece you will not only gain a deeper knowledge of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ but also add some impressive and slick rhythm moves to your guitar playing.
In this video you will see the Performance followed by a detailed Breakdown.
Here’s a breakdown of the chords and lines used:
🎸Before we start it’s important to know the basic chords to ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’
🎸In this piece we are going to substitute the basic chords with alternatives
🎸We start with the descending chord pattern of the intro using a rhythmic pattern
🎸For the E7 play 0,11,12,11,12 and also include the high E, 12 after the sliding motif
🎸For the A7 use the same shape X4545 and slide it up to quote ‘Limehouse Blues’
🎸For D7 we repeat the figure used in E7 except playing X9,10,9,10 for D7
🎸A diminished octave pattern is played over the G
🎸Then repeat the first E7 riff
🎸A blues bend down to the bottom E starts the Em7/B7/ section but using a lush Em7 chord 0X5757 enclosed by diminished chords either side
🎸The ending phrase is the same as the intro but capped off with a fun ending lick
As it says in the title this piece is all about the rhythm. To make this piece sound cool first learn the chord shapes then add the rhythm. Play it slowly and practice over and over again.
