Regarding the cornstarch as thickener: Did this today and it was a success. Mixed 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 100 mls of water (a little less than 1/2 of a cup as 100 mls equals 0.42 cup) and microwaved for a total of 90 seconds. Mixed it in a glass pyrex measuring cup and had to stop the microwave to stir a few times in that minute and a half to keep it from bubbling over. Let it cool and thicken then stirred in 1 tablespoon of Ammonium Chloride. Used a paintbrush to brush a nice thin coat over the vinyl stencil covered wood. Let it dry thoroughly, removed the stencil and hit with the heat gun. It turned out beautifully!

I tried this but I'm not sure the solution is correct. It is like a gel/booger consistency
@noecharbonneau5725
@noecharbonneau5725 3 года назад
@@amyschmitz2138 I think the thickness keeps it from seeping underneath your stencil! Yet, it was still able to be brushed onto the wood in a thin even layer. Try it with more water to get a thinner consistency but be aware that too thin may bleed under the stencil.

@suzannemelton7611

I tried with corn starch for the first time (also my first piece). Still bled under the vinyl. Used 1 ibsp ammonium chloride, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1/2 tsp corn starch. Still bled when I heated it. Consistency still seemed watery. Ordered Thick-It, just waiting on it to arrive. Measurements with the corn starch are obviously wrong, just wouldn't get thick. Any additional suggestions? I initially added warm water. It got cool so I stuck it in the microwave for 45 seconds (water was stil slightly warm) things began to pop, so I removed from microwave. And, is this reuseable at the right consistency? TIA

it does look very fun and everything works so smoothly for those making the videos but what they dont show is all the wasted supplies and screw ups made learning to get it right. some things with my cricut maker are very easy and fun, other things are frustrating and heartbreaking when you work for hours on a design only to have it mess up somehow and now youre out of materials and have no money for more till payday. so if you are wanting to get one be sure to shop your butt off for the cheapest priced but good quality materials and tools. the machine isnt the expensive part i promise. i do have to note that dollar tree now sells cricut type tools and materials which are decent quality and great for practicing everything before spending $15 on a 48" roll of cricut brand premium vinyl. also, get extra mats, like alot of mats.

Hey! LOVE this tutorial! My question, is there a way to make re-useable stencils? Or does it pretty much need to be printed every single time? Like if I wanted to do several of those cutting boards, do I have to repeat the process each time? Just curious if there is a hack to making 5-6 of them at a time....thanks for reading!

@tracygreen1131
@tracygreen1131 2 года назад
@@sarahellis3675 It all depends on what you're using it for. If you're making a charcuterie board, you should use a food-grade mineral oil on both sides, let it dry (preferably over night) and wipe off the excess before using. If you are making a cutting board, use food grade and unboiled Linseed oil. It'll create a food-safe and a sort of plastic-like material on the cutting board to protect it and makes it easier to maintain.

Thanks so much Mario! Weeding and applying your designs can be kind of like an art form that you have to develop a "feel" for... I'd *make sure that you aren't overdoing it when you burnish the transfer tape* to your vinyl though, and you might also *try reverse weeding for the small intricate cuts* . Also, the brand of vinyl and tape make all the difference in the world. Your best bet if you aren't already, is to use something like the StarCraft HD permanent vinyl and clear medium tack transfer tape. I'll link those for you here, plus feel free to use code "CRAFTY" to save 5% on your order if you'd like. Ultimately, this will be something you have to kind of test out for yourself with some trial and error to figure out exactly what's going on. I hope this helps!! 🤩 Good luck!! mrcraftypants.co/tape mrcraftypants.co/SC

@@adorableaccessories I got Aptamil Feed Thickener from Chemist Warehouse - It was I think about $11. I found that if you mix the thickener in warm - hot water, it allows the thickener to dissolve better and then I added the ammonium chloride - I think I did 6-8 scoops (in the container) to 1 tablespoon ammonium chloride and 1/4 cup water. ☺️

Two questions: 1) How can I do to get the results quickly? (thinking in not staying a lot in my wood- does the mix works better if I mix more ammonium in the solution? 2) I have the problem that with my wood slices the piece being dried too much and crack at the end. What can I do for this? Thank you so mucho for the help!!!

I am not yet happy with the result and trying to figure out what helps the NH4Cl-Solution not to seep (?) Under the vinyl stencil... tried different and between removable and permanent vinyl... Since I can't get cornstarch I use simple food starch here. Very good usable... one tblspoon of starch on 100ml warm water... short time of microwave and it is way thicker then wallpaper paste... then I add one tblspoon of NH4Cl and it burns just fine. The only problem to solve is the seeping... tried different ways of sanding.... sanded it to 160 then to 240 Still no good :/ some hints would be great if someone has some
