You're right Matt, awesome drill. Such a common problem among golfers and if they could replicate this drill and practice enough we'd see a lot less over the top and slice shots on the golf course. For me I'd rather play a draw that starts right and curves back then the other way around.

By far the best RU-vid golf instruction IMO. Simple, effective drills. I've found AB's "throwing" the club towards your target drill particularly effective. So much so in fact that I made my first HIO this week with that one swing thought in mind!

Finally someone bright enough to teach the patient approach. I don’t think anyone can permanently fix a golf swing in one lesson. I think it has to be developed based on simple, broad themes...then refined over time with gentle, practiced adjustments. Thanks again for not forcing people to panic.

Adam, I love your videos and have improved quite a bit since watching them. I only started golfing this summer for the first time at the age of 55. But I’m confused on this one. I don’t understand how hitting the ball to the right will correct the swing path. I hit my irons fairly straight now(thanks to your videos) but now I’m back to slicing my driver. Thanks again for your time to do these videos for us.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 года назад
Thanks. If you're slicing your driver I'd put my attention on closing the club face more in the downswing, the face HAS to be open (not counting mishits) if it's slicing. Once the curve is gone then work on swing path as needed. Swinging to the right is just a way to feel the opposite of cutting across the target line (swinging to the left). I hope this helps. Best, Adam

Wish I'd seen this video 3 months ago. I developed the shanks after playing well for a long time, caused by 'casting' or 'going over the top'. Researched it heavily and found that I needed to come more from the inside. This worked short term but then the wheels really came off. I have recently learned that I was taking the backswing from the inside also but far too much. It created a new casting problem to try and get back to the ball at impact. I'm now trying to start more square at the backswing and inside on the downswing. Early results are positive but needs a few tweaks. Thanks for the video Adam, and those fairways look like carpet!

I play with two scratch players often at my club...one is young, 30 or so, the other is 65...he's the club champ--his swing is WAY inside out--back in again. The young guy hits it a country mile--around 300 every time, and HE swings slightly outside in...it's incredible that he's that good and still is working on this at his level. I think almost every golfer can benefit from this lesson, I certainly hope to. Thanks for posting.

This drill actually works really well to get the feeling of hitting from the inside out. I used this drill to change my drive path and was amazed at how effective hitting from the inside to out is. It's a really hard concept for a lot of people to understand mentally that hitting from the inside to the outside creates a straight shot, took me a couple years, but it works.

probably one of the better Videos. Getting into the science gets too boring for most golfers. A simple drill is best for most armatures but, if I were to help you identify a way to improve / I would say to ask the student to practice this drill 75 times with maybe a couple of breaks ,,say after every 25 swings. Just a 30 second break. Maybe putt a couple of balls or, swing a couple of chip / pitch shots then, come back and do 25 more until it starts to become second nature. Then, after 75 swings, tee up a ball and hit the 6 iron or 7 or driver. This is something I look forward to doing and after hundreds of videos over my 15 year golf game, as a major improvement. Thank you so much for sharing this drill. John : j

There are a lot of "instructors" on RU-vid. There are far fewer teachers. Adam is a teacher. I've never been a mechanical golfer and telling me about positions and weight distributions is utterly pointless. Seriously, who thinks about having 55% of your weight on the left foot when you start your backswing"? Adam has an informal, common sense way of teaching that just clicks for me. I've become a huge fan of his channel and teaching style because I can watch one of his videos and incorporate the lesson. The biggest thing I've learned is that while you're working on your swing don't be obsessed with the results of he shot. It has made a HUGE difference. Thanks for what you do Adam and keep the videos coming!

I believe what would be useful to add is that with a more in to out swing the weight shifting towards the left foot becomes even more important. Why do people come from the out to in in the first place? As it is in my case: I had bad ball contact when coming in to out because I didn't shift enough. With out to in swings, I had better ball contacts but had shots to the left or - worst case scenario - shanks. So coming more from the inside should eradicate shanks or shots to the left, but to really get the most out of it, it is fundamental to focus on the correct weight distribution throughout the swing. I strongly believe there is a strong connection between all these topics.

Hitting a draw is one of the most difficult skills you can acquire. It's comparable to playing the entire solo to Hotel California, note for note on guitar. Here are the things that must happen to hit a draw: 1. The club must drop straight down at start of downswing - if your hips or shoulders rotate first (over the top), you're dead 2. Your shoulders must rotate around the axis of your spine, which means the left shoulder will lower on the back swing, and right shoulder will lower on the downswing and follow through. If you don't drop your right shoulder, you cannot hit from the inside. 3. Your right wrist must be extended - palm up at the top of the backswing. Do not start flexing the wrist until the handle is coming across your body, and never go beyond neutral (flipping the club). 4. The right elbow must stay close to the body and must clear your right hip as your hands pass in front of you. If you're not flexible enough to clear your hip (most of us aren't), you will have to slide your hips slightly forward. 5. Your hands must be past the ball at impact, and before fully releasing the club. 6. Your left arm must be fully extended, with your left bicep tucked snugg-ly against your chest, elbow against your left side, and antecubital facing upward. 7. As your hands cross in front of you, complete your hip and shoulder turn - push through with the right shoulder as if you were doing an upper cut. Extend your right arm through impact as you release the club. Try to keep your center of gravity over your feet - when you first learn, it will feel as if you are falling toward the ball as you finish the swing. 8. Once you have your path inside to out by performing the proper transitions, work on getting the club face closed at impact (as mentioned in the video). The key is to keep the left wrist flat, or slightly flexed (no cupping!) and it should feel as if you are turning the back of your left hand towards the ground at impact (known as hooding the ball). Take the eight things above and work on them one at a time. Then start combining them. Be patient, and don't worry about the outcome until all pieces are together. The first drill should be done using just your left arm, do a big shoulder turn and allow gravity to let the club drop straight down before starting your shoulder turn. Then do the same with only your right arm, keeping the elbow tucked - then put it together with both hands. The 9 O'clock to 3 O'clock drill is also excellent for identifying many bad habits. Best of luck!

Hi rob here. I have been struggling with getting my hip sway through impact. I tend to have my shoulder leading rather than my hip. Any tips? Great video!

Rob, Hard to say without seeing you swing. Maybe rehearse what you want in slow motion, then add some speed. Hope you get it sorted out. All the best, Adam

The notes appearing on the screen actually covers the ball. Suggest shift it to some corner. We should be able to see the ball at the time of impact. Santosh

Nice Adam, As a byproduct of this drill, note the pelvis. Adam slots the path along the line of the pelvis. Get that, and after you groove the club path, you can then speed up the pelvis.

Will laying off the club at the top make this harder? I tend to be really out to in
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 года назад
Not necessarily Jett. If it’s severely laid off it might cause the club to flop over the top. All the best, Adam

As always, another great video and appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise. To get the club face back "online" during the forward swing wouldn't you have to initiate the downswing with a lower-body forward movement (toward the target) and rotation. Otherwise, the club would continue to go toward the "outward" direction.

How do we “solve the clubface” Adam?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 4 года назад
You have to practice it Mark. Hold the club up in front of you, turning it towards the ground (somewhat bowing it) is closed. Hit lots of half shots with a 6 iron until you are good at hitting it left and right at will, then you have feel Hope this helps Best, Adam

How do you not release the wrists too early?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 4 года назад
Matthew, I'm afraid there is no answer to that, try to feel the release at the moment of impact. If I was using a fly swatter, and 'scooped' the fly up the wall, what would you tell me? It's a bit like that, you just have to relax your mind and adjust. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

If the amateur golfer were able to follow those instructions and hit the ball to the right like that following bat swing path, then why wouldn’t they just practice hitting the ball with a correct straight path and go dead straight? Doesn’t make sense to me
@Scratchgolfacademy

The human mind learns motor skills by contrast. Always trying for neutral usually doesn't build deep skill. Once the person can freely hit the boundaries (so to speak) they can then more easily dial neutral in. Also, when under duress, as in on course, and they start to struggle, they will have more built in feel to make corrections. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

Good channel/content, but that intro is a little cheesy. I'd recommend just going right into content, or, if you feel compelled by branding purposes to have an intro of sorts, make it shorter.

Michael, This video is aimed at people who pull & fade, and want to work towards a draw feeling. If you already hit hooks when you struggle (I do) then you'd want to ignore this type of video. If someone has low blood pressure, they should not take medicine that lowers it more etc. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

This is a great drill for gofers that come over the top and hit the ball out on the toe. I've been struggling with solid iron contact for years and have started using this drill as I am getting ready for the season to start (live in western NYS). As every golfer swings differently, this drill is appropriate for some, not everyone. Cheers
