Here I will be comparing 4 microscopes based on their image quality at 100x. They produce very similar results.

You inspired me to get a microscope of my own. It's a vintage 1938 Leitz LL; it has three objectives, a mechanical stage, and a mirror for illumination. I found it on Ebay; it is in excellent condition and I got it for $125. So thanks for your great videos! Let the fun begin...

I would be very interested in your take on how today's lenses compare to high-end old ones. I have an American Optical Spencer 1036a that I picked up on craigslist for a few bucks. It has infinity PLAN optics, but it's from the '60s. I'm wondering how it compares to inexpensive (and expensive) current lenses. Needs a few parts and a little work to really be as functional as I want, but I'm not sure if it's worth it if the quality doesn't compare well with a, let's say, $300-$500 current model.

Hello my fellow "microscope" friend :-) I am currently looking and learning about bio -microscopes. I stumbled upon your channel, and it has been a very pleasurable experience listening to your insightful, knowledgeable and passionate videos. After looking extensively on the topic of microscopes, via both RU-vid channels and websites, it was becoming glaringly obvious that it was a minefield, And so bumping into you, good sir - was a breath of fresh air. You have an excellent style of teaching, very clear and precise advice and a lovely delivery of information. Now I am trying to decide between: Euromex Bresser Brunel All the very best! Andy. M (UK).

Hello, thank you for the nice feedback. About your microscope choice: I think it does not depend so much on the individual company or brand, but rather on the individual microscope. Many of the microscopes (even good ones) are manufactured in China and are then branded and imported. Each company has microscopes with different prices and qualities. You say that: "it was becoming glaringly obvious that it was a minefield". Could you tell me more about the problems and issues that you had? I would like to make a video that talks about these problems to help others. Oliver.

Its March 17 and its snowing a ton here in Illinois right now and I've always been curious to see what odd things are in this strange kind of snow and was looking to get my own microscope
@Microbehunter
@Microbehunter 4 года назад
Put some clear nail polish (ice cold, from freezer) on a microscope slide generously. Allow some snow to settle into the wet nail polish and allow to dry for a day or so (in cold weather it dries slower). The impression of the snow flakes will then be in the nail polish and you then can observe the "snowflake" (or rather it's impression) under the microscope. Precipitation (rain, snow) indeed contains lots of stuff, even microplastics. You need to collect a lot of snow, allow it to melt and then maybe filter it or allow the particles to settle or float on top.

I got myself a microscope, it's a Romanian make, IOR ( Romanian Optical Enterprise ), model ML-4M, it has a binocular head with twin 7x eyepieces, and 5 objectives: 6x, 10x, 20x, 40x and 90x Leitz Wetzlar Apo Oel; on the hinge cap of the adjustable interpupillary distance it is written 1.6x, I will buy a slide with measuring divisions so I can accurately determine the fine details of the worn diamond stylus from my phono cartridge.

Yes it is possible to see bacteria with this microscope, but bacteria are difficult to see generally. If you want to see bacteria, then it is best to buy a commercial slide that has stained bacteria on them.

Hello, thank you for the video. I am a newbie but have a need for as best quality as I can get for the buck. I noticed that some rather inexpensive scopes are 2500x. I'm looking at used very good quality scopes and they say 100x, I'm assuming that is just the eyepiece? Can you recommend a scope on ebay that's around $400, something that will show me blood cells up close as possible? Thanks for any help.

So microscope use what to measure it's power (like how small thing it can show , like 5nm objects) if you said the magnify number is not refer to how powerful it is...so i wonder when we purchasing a microscope what we should look at? Only more pricey represents it is better?

Hey, I'm a biology student in Belgium and I am very interested in buying a microscope! I know I'll be using the microscope frequently in the future. I watched a lot of your videos and I am very interested in the white monocular microcope you showed in this video. I am looking for a monocular microscope with a mechanical stage, light intensity regulator and a condenser. All your monocular recommendations on Amazon don't have all of these things... Can you give me advide on where I can get this microscope you showed here or where i can find one? Or should I go with a binocular microscope even though i prefer a monocular?

@glasslinger

Not too much you need it for. A good quality air objective will give a better image in the end as a lower cost oil objective with a lot less mess!

Personally, I use a bead of water. This costs about £0.0000001. Magnification is about 1.3. I find little difference in image between that and bottled water. However the cost is about £0.001, or about 100 000 times more than tap water.

The easiest way is to connect a USB camera. Take out the eyepiece and insert the USB camera. The USB camera is connected to the computer.
@user-gt7op7we8e
@user-gt7op7we8e 4 года назад
Do NOT use 25x eyepieces (especially with cameras). Trust me, you're not even going to be able to see anything beyond 1500x anyways. If you wanna take high magnification photos, your best bet is to use 10x high eye-point eyepieces (much better for cameras) and a very good quality Apo or Flour objective.

Another beginner scope almost exactly like the National & Swift is the Duoscope as it has 2 lights , standard one from bottom, one above the stage shines down which provides a darkscope view of opaque items. I find that I use that setting more than lit from the bottom. www.amazon.com/dp/B0167VF07S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_IAl-EbW6HWJ9D

I"m not an expert but do have a biology degree. If you're going to grow the bacteria and stain it, you can see it with a $100 microscope with 100x objective. I believe you MAY be able to see it with a phase contrast set up without staining but not sure.
