Your face gives as much information as the (very convincing) commentary! It’s a real pleasure to see the smile! I keep thinking about an SL2-S but need to save up some pocket money first. This is a really helpful video. Thank you.
When I first handled the SL at the Leica Store when they came out my reaction was, "no way, this is huge!" But things change I guess... I picked up mine 6 months ago, and much like you, I am overwhelmingly thrilled with this camera. The weight and size don't bother me at all (long strap across the chest and camera to the side/back), has a great solid feel, simple to use, but with all the information and control I need. And yes, focusing can actually be more accurate when using it with my vintage M-series lenses than a Leica RF camera. Also enjoying my late 1950s Takumar lenses on the SL for their beautiful 'look' and have a few pluses; with their preset aperture ring (free turning), close focus, and can be a very low cost these days.
Thanks Robert! Congrats on you SL, yes i'm surprised how much i've taken to it! I've been enjoying the Leica R lenses on mine but as per last night's video the Nikkor lenses can be fantastic for the money too!
I tend to do my best documentary work with my Leica M9, which I've had for over ten years. The S5 joined the stable last month to shore up some of the M9's weaknesses, like high ISO performance, burst rate, and lack of video mode. I certainly understand the identity crisis of using non Leica after building an emotional investment as a 'Leica shooter', it's just something I'm coming to terms with. To be honest, one reason I have the S5 is because a SL2-S is out of budget right now. As for manual focus, I've found that if I hit the Focus Magnify button on the back while raising the camera to my eye, and turn the lens on the way up, all I have to do is achieve critical focus then press the shutter button.
Thanks yes the S5 is a strong performer for sure. It’s partly because I’m client facing as a Leica guy and I do still like the Leica EVF MF better (I knew as had the CL already). S5 still works ofc.
I got an SL about 18 months ago, with the 24-90 lens, as a trade on my corroded S2 and the 70 Summarit-S and I've kept it. It's a handy platform for any lenses and it is sturdy, weatherproof and reliable. WTG.
Matt, you'll be blown away by the quality of your portraits shooting with this SL. The weight with SL lenses is sometimes a bit too much and that makes me use Voigtlaender lenses more and more. In this YT you just nailed the experiences I had with the M and CL camera's (and still the are so beautiful..)
Always nice to see you happy and excited 😀🙃 I totally share your experience. I am using the SL (601) for a couple of months now. It’s great! I am using it with a Summicron 50mm f2. This is my favorite camera setup currently. After using mostly analog cameras for the last few years, I now feel a little overwhelmed by the cost, time and complexity. So it’s a joy to shoot the SL. It also feels great in the hands, since I prefer heavier cameras in general. The weight is no problem when walking around. Even though it’s pretty big, it does not seem to intimidate people when shooting street portraits.
Yay!! Finally The SL. There’s something truly classic and beautiful about the SL files and color rendition. Look forward to seeing the photos from your SL
@@astraeusone yes my feelings exactly. I’m seeing camera sensors favor higher dynamic range, higher pixel density and higher ISO values and I’m noticing that the luminance and color integrity are dulled because of these “advancements”
Thank you! Nice, I have the 75APO M lens. No, if you’ve seen this channel before you’ll know I have way too many lenses already ha. I like MFocus so I’ll mostly use M & R lenses.
I have that 75mm SL as well. Could only afford one lens to go with my SL2. But wow what a lens. I use my Q-P for wide angle work. Probably get that 35mm SL down the road. A long road lol.
Matt- Thinking about getting a full frame Mirrorless as the genre has matured. Have you tried your SL with the Voightlander 15/4.5 I (ltm) or II (M) lens? Both of these have had problems with purple fringing with early full frame sensors, does this problem occur with the SL?
Thanks for making this video. I've recently come to a similar conclusion that the SL system is a superior tool for digital work, although for film nothing beats a Leica M. Had several sleepless night going back and forth between repurchasing another SL or stepping up to SL2s, lol. BTW - The infinity (horizontal) RF adjustment is a really easy DYI fix. I recommend giving it a try if you haven't already. Close focus adjustments definately requires a certified technician though.
Thank you Robert. Yes still enjoying my SL and more videos will come. Thanks regarding the RF. Sadly most of my work is close focus so I need the RF spot on.
I've been shooting Leica since the 90's and have had an SL for about 3 years and an S for over 5 years. I'm holding onto both. I did sell a Q and got a Sigma fp and several M lenses- 1 old Summicron and 2 newer Voigtlander. I think the SL has advantages over the SL2 and the SL-S in that I like the metal grip and not having IBIS or a touch screen. My current favorite is my fp with Voigtlander lenses. Buying an SL is a sound decision.
Thanks CTC! Yes I don’t need touch screen and one issue with the S5 is the focus point would drift so when I came to shoot it wasn’t centred. Same can happen with CL with AF lens on
I just bought an M-E 240 just to experience for myself what the hype about Leica M cameras is all about. I currently shoot an SL and for the past few hours I’ve been worried I made the wrong decision. All the reasons you mentioned are exactly what I love about my SL and all the cons about the M240 are exactly what I’m scared of 😂 I am seriously considering selling the M-E 240 as soon as I get it (still being shipped)
Hi, sorry, don't let me worry you about the M cameras. They are amazing and you will love the size and RF experience. The M gives the real Leica experience I think. Hope you like it!
I shoot only M glass on my Leica SL with a Leica adapter. Don’t have any auto focus lenses. My favorite lens on SL is the Voigtländer 21mm F1.4, I shoot mainly travel and landscapes and this is really a spectacular lens.
Thanks William! I used the 21mm f4 Skopar when teaching a workshop/ photo walk yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I'd use my 21mm Biogon next time though. I've not tried the 1.4.
Congratulations on your new purchase! I’m sure you will make a lot of great use out of it and it will allow you to take even better pictures than you have achieved with your rangefinders
switched from Sony to two SL2-S's for my wedding work. Love the camera, just something about it that makes you want to shoot. Also found it easier to use M mount lenses on them to focus quickly as the contrast detect can be a bit slow. Great video keep up the good work
I love my SL for all the reasons you outlined, but also for its flexibility. I can put on a Voigtlander 75 f1.5 for portraits and the sheer pleasure of using the lens, or I can use zoom auto focus glass when the need arrises. However, it is big and if Leica would produce an interchangeable Q with a L Mount, I would buy one instantly, especially if it had an EVF I could tilt up.
I couldn’t agree more. There is nothing I want to do more than to be able to stick a 50mm or 90mm on my Q. I think Leica is scared that if they made an interchangeable Q body, no one would buy their other cameras
Welcome to the club! I love my SL, i find it to be the perfect complement to my rangefinders - and I still like it better than the newer SL2 and SL2S (check them side by side, the 'old' controls work better for me, and I do not feel I need to double the MPs) ... enjoy it!
Received my SL yeaterday , after testing I decided to put the first round of Fuji-lenses to ebay for selling....what a great camera! Using it with the Voigtländer 35 1.7 Ultron VM , and the 15mm Heliar...will I need more lenses? Thinking about..😁
Cheers Perry, great camera! I think I linked the adapter in the description. You might want 2 adapters. I did a shorts video on this. Search Leica M-L adapter and hopefully you’ll see it, if not sign up to MrLeica.com and I send a free search tool so you can find any of the 210+ videos easily.
Congrats to your SL. I will stick to my Leica Ms and exclude the SL series since it doesn't fit to my workstream for different reasons. Never needed a recalibration done - but this might depend how it is pushed around. The VF-2 works fast on my M-E 240 since it has a bigger RAM than the standard M 240.
I've done a few shoots with my old Leica lenses on mirrorless Canon EOS R and was very happy with the quality... what I found inconvenient though is the aperture control. Focus peaking/magnification works well at full aperture but it's not so easy to judge the exact point of focus when stopped down. Are you shooting wide open all the time? If you wanted to shoot at say f/2.8 would you just focus at f/2.8 or focus at full aperture and stop down to take the shot? I kind of expected the extra depth of field to help at f/2.8 but it doesn't really! (I'm talking about shooting with an Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 by the way.... its sharp in the centre at full aperture but in compositions where the eyes are towards the edges of the frame it does need stopping down a bit.
Hi thank you for your information, does the M 240 is miss a line much or is it just that one Leica, also have you had a change to test out Voigtlander Nokton 35mm F1.2 III was it good I am looking at over the Leica 35mm f1.4 asph which is $3500UD to $4700US, the Voigtlander is new is $949.00 new in the US. Have you tested the Sony a7 IV to the SL or SL 2 please let me know. Thank you for your help.
Hello, it will be all Leica M cameras, the more you use the more likely it will need adjusting more often (I did mine at least yearly). I just got the 35mm 1.2 v3 so stay tuned. I've not shot Sony but i'm very happy with the SL and don't look to change.
The main takeaway about the SL 601 is are the images off that sensor ( the film), they produce the most pleasing images of any digital camera sensors to date.
Thanks for your review, Matt. Here are my conclusions, based on this vid. I use Typ601 for an everyday shooting with an AF glass. This is a truly amazing cam with paramount design aesthetics and image quality. @) There is no perfect camera. I recently saw a nice comparison between M10R black paint edition and d850, with d850 beating it to a punch image quality-wise (to MY taste). @) There are always a decent reasons to pick some other system. Having too much options due to whatever isn't a good thing, it is really a breeding ground for doubts - a powerful distractor from doing actual image taking. @) Lumix S5 is an excellent IBIS+, BSI+, good AF camera. With not being a Leica as a major downside. @) No amount of info would prevent us from GAS, we've got to experience it to have a chance overcoming it, perhaps (:
you're really good at delivering the message, the news, the information we expect and all without any goofy sidelines or peripheral focus points. I appreciate the reviews !!! im after the SL
Hello, you are limited only by the lens you use. M lenses normally go to 0.7m but mount them via an adapter and you can get closer. If need more info you can reach me at mrleica.com/zoom
Thanks Lucy, I think all through my ‘CL years’ I was happy but now I will do more testing am I think the CL files look flatter / less true Leica shallow DOF look..testing to come. The CL is still great too*
how hard you you need to knock it for the RF to go out of wack? I have had my M240 for a few years, don't know when or if the RF was fixed by the previous owner.
Hi Robert for me I never notice it happen, it seems to get gradually worse probably with a series of smaller knocks. If it is sharp wide open at 0.7m you are fine.
I bought my SL (601) January 2020 to digitize my M-glass. Since then, I have reluctantly sold my mint M4-P and all its glass. With an SL and CL, I am very happy with two 24MP cameras that share the L-mount. The SL is a tremendous value. Have you noticed since its introduction as the flagship, the SL-line has become the value option compared to the M cameras?
Thanks JK! I would not say they aim the SL line as the value line no, I think they use it to offer FF mirrorless and more of a DSLR style shooting experience with very high performing big lenses + zooms vs Ms & RF lenses. SL lenses are certainly not value! :)
Hey@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComto clarify, when introduced in Oct. 2015, the SL was $7500 USD, whilst the M typ 262, introduced a month later in Nov 2015, was "only" $5195. At launch, Leica priced the SL (601) higher due to its many superior features and advanced technology. Subsequent M-camera releases have flip-flopped that paradigm and far surpassed current SL camera pricing. That's what I define as value. It seems Wetzlar figured out there were deeper pockets for their ancient RF "technology" and are taking full advantage of those willing to pay $8995 USD for a body and $8195 for the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. Regarding lenses, the SL lenses are certainly no bargain, but adapted M-glass from Zeiss or L-mount options from Panasonic and Sigma make very usable alternatives.
@@jklphoto thanks yes a value point. Yes I think the M is still the true Leica so that’s their baby/ what most people want if they buy Leica. I see the SL for those that want the brand but can’t use RF cameras / don’t like them. I love them ofc but the SL lets me do what I need to do. Totally agree about non SL lenses, that’s how I’ll be using mine.
I have the CL & was waiting for a CL2 but talked myself into a SL2 instead. The CL with the 18 feels like a toy after lugging the SL2 around ha ha. You seem pretty excited congratulations
Thank you! Yes the CL is so small and light compared ha! Yes first results from the SL are very promising hence the excitement. I’ll try to get some samples on social media after the weekend and videos to follow too.
Well, the kits getting bigger 😏 with the Leica SL, but getting your subject in focus these days with the wonderful market of vintage lenses is challenging! I'm enjoying your journey, Matt!
hey matt, i am thinking about getting a SL in 2021 as well. I am Fuji Shooter but I shoot an 35mm Minolta CLE (M-Mount) with voigtländer glass aswell. My question: How about the colours from the SL compared to the Leica M240? Is it the same 24MP Sensor and are the colours the same? thx from berlin. Christopher
i am looking for to have a typical "leica render", the famous "leica look"... but M8 or M9 are too old or expensive, with a bad screen, too slow... and hard ton find. What do you choose between M240 (or M262) and SL is you are looking for the "leica look" ? which camera between these two is closer ? Thank you.
Hi Marco, hmm yes the M8/M9 have the most Leica-film look but agreed too slow for 2022 for serious use. I've not noticed much differences between SL and M240. I think M's are said to be designed to be a bit more Leica looking (filmic/less digital) but i've not noticed. The SL is a joy to use and as you can use any lens unless you want the M rangefinder experience then get the SL and pair with older lenses to get the look. R lenses offer great value for this, see mrleica.com/leica-r-lenses-review/
I'm glad you like your SL, but it amazes me that there isn't a technician in your own country who can recalibrate an M rangefinder vs. sending it off for a 2-month vacation in Solms. Back in the '60s RF calibration was practically a walk-in service in any major city, and all the manufacturers designed their cameras so the RF could be adjusted without disassembly. Go ahead and call me a grumpy boomer, but this doesn't seem like progress!
Thanks JL, ah yes I heard this on a podcast actually, the walk in centre and say for big events. Yes because it’s digital the first 2 times I sent it to Leica via the Mayfair store but agreed I should be able to get it done in the UK. Funnily enough though they had a 6 week lead time too! :) Less of a rush now I have the SL and I adjusted the M240 enough to use wides accurately.
Currently trying to sell a Leica Q and getting a Canon R5 but my heart is telling me sl2s. I am using it for 50/50 work and hobby so Im torn. The R5 is clearly better but the Leica Q has been such a thrill and I very rarely have to post process…
Hi, I just wanted to thank you for your combination of talented work, tasteful portraits and gear review. After testing a bunch of film (35, 120 and even 5x7), and digital cameras of alll kinds, I just bough a used SL to use with my set of Leica R lenses (28, 35, 50, 90 and 180). I am impressed by the results. Even in video! This review definitely triggered the decision. Usage is second nature once you get used to the zoom-in button. I bought the set for video a couple of years ago to use with Blackmagic cameras, and they excel, I just miss the 19mm. Do you really find the Panasonic S5 so much better for video? I considered buying the S1 or even the S1H, but I´d rather keep pictures and video separated. Thanks again for your work and generosity. 🙏
Thanks for your kind words and congrats on your SL! Yes I love the R lenses too on digital. The S5 is good for video and even photos. I will so SL vs S5 video when I get time. It is well overdue.
I've been considering the Panasonic S5, the SL2-S and the SL, but have partly ruled out the first two. A question:- has the SL firmware been updated to give the summary starting "boxes" settings menu as per the CL? That update to the CL made a great difference to the ease of use, and I'd miss it on any SL series camera, if it isn't there.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for your answer. I have an idea that the SL, being a "superseded" model, may not receive much more in the way of updates, especially major menu changes. It seems the last firmware update was 3.7 at the start of 2020, which would suggest that Leica haven't got much new in mind for it, except perhaps for anything required to use newer Sigma lens features.
Outstanding explanation between the differences and frustration between the m and the sl. I have started looking at Leica as I currently shoot Sony, Nikon and Fuji, so I want to know about that Leica magic from owners and I thank you for this. I would also like to add, you were not a fraud for bringing a Panasonic. Sometimes we all have a tendency to get to caught up in gear and brands. You brought the Panasonic because it was the best camera for the job and never get caught up in titles, like Mr. Leica or Matt Granger’s old title of that Nikon Guy. I think part of the reason for feeling like a fraud is because you attached your self to a brand so much that you thought that others saw you that way and couldn’t see you any other way. The camera companies by in large only care that you buy their product, not about who you are as a person. If you knew a lot about Harley Davidson motorcycles or Rolex watches, it wouldn’t make you that Harley guy or that Rolex guy. You are a photographer and teacher that uses Leica as a preference as Matt Granger uses Nikon as his. Based off of your video, if I buy Leica, it will be the SL series as I have no desire to send parts back to the manufacturer every 18 months. Keep up the good work and content.
Thanks Sid, I appreciate your support and yes the SL is such a good camera. If you ever get one be sure to write and let me know hope you like it! (If you want to try before you buy if you ever attend one of my workshops you can try mine).
With respect I get that we can all become fans of particular products/brands and rationally often is not employed. My take away? Leica have only recently developed a wide application camera that you don’t have to send back for recalibration every year … despite costing a fortune. Did I miss something?
hah look look 😀 I myself got an SL 2 weeks ago and I am glad i got it 👍🏻 first i got the S1R some months ago to digitize my analog film negatives with a Leica R 100mm APO which is awesome. I am not sure what i am gonna do with the S1R now. But i might just try to do some "scans" with the SL as well and compare them. But i guess i might just keep it as well 🤗
Nice one Matt !! Just what a professional photograph needs. The boys in Leica Manchester sorted out the problem I had with the M240. They are real good nothing is too much trouble. Couldn't afford a SL my heating allowance wouldn't stretch.
I never consider the SL as it’s a bit big and heavy for me. I bought the CL inspired by your videos. Yesterday I bought a 24mm Elmar for the CL now becoming a 35mm lens, haha!
Thanks yes the CL is still awesome and will be my camera when I a small setup (travel etc). Congrats on your 24mm! I use the 24mm Elmarit-R lens now too as cheap vs M glass.
I know there is a strong argument for Auto Focus as a primary tool , but I do enjoy using the manual focus more, why... The controllability Maybe it is an impressionists thing. In my heart a good imager , should be able to compose real Art. Human or nature street or portraiture ... Composition is in my opinion 90 % of the art. You can have hyper sexual or classical model , but place them in a bad composition or photograph the human form in the wrong way ; you cheapen the form and the image. This is why I like manual lenses, composing and taking time.
I shoot weddings and porrraits as a side job with two 5d3s and my plan was to upgrade on of them for a second hand 5d4. To my Suprise a used leica SL was not Much more expensive so im really tempted to buy a SL instead with a sigma 85mm 1.4 just to have something different to my Canon gear . Compare to a 5d3 how good is the autofocus in dim churches?
@@Herkulez1981 it’s like the old live view on the mk3 canons (wedding shooters used them when I had the D800) but 1000x better :) .. can zoom in 10x and see every eyelash at f1.0.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It is no bigger than the native SL lenses and it produces such beautiful images. The weight is the special glass elements used which Leica unfortunately no longer incorporates due to cost
Not sure about your range finder calibration issues. I shoot weddings on two M10s and previously two M240s. M240s I shot for 5 or 6 years and only sent them in once for calibration, have not had to ever on my M10s since 2017/18. I shot hundreds of weddings on my 240s and pretty much never had an issue until I dropped one after being knocked at a wedding (weird accident haha) but was fixed by Leica USA no problems. I added a SL2-S to my kit for AF and love it, but your calibration issues seem a little crazy. Every year for calibrations, not my experience in anyway with very very heavily used M240s and M10s.
Thanks Cairo! Yes one of my Patreons said the M10s have a modified RF so less risky of needing calibration. Yes I used to send my to Germany once the RF accuracy was no longer good enough for portraits with fast lenses. M's are great for weddings. I'll use my M240 with 21mm so everything in focus + SL now as main camera. I'm careful but I do fly a lot (pre-Covid) so not sure if vibrations make it worse/ go out faster). (My worst wedding accident was dropping my Noctilux on a concrete church floor! I nearly died. Needed repair but still works fine now thankfully).
I regretfully sold my Epson RD-1s because the rangefinder mechanism was very sensitive and fragile. I had it go wildly out after only light use. Fabulous camera, let down by the rangefinder.
Love you channel. I feel the same way with my Nikon Z6 and Z7. I have Zeiss lens and the EVF/focus peaking/magnification makes shooting at 1.4 a breeze. I still have a F3 and F100 with my Nikkor AIS lens. I designated my Z6 for monochrome work even with my AIS nikkors while reserving the Z7 for landscape and color with my Zeiss Otus'. Glad you like your more modern Leica. I got a Leica q monochrom arriving this week. (Yes, I am spending my kid's inheritance, but being retired I feel zero guilt).
Thanks Gary!! I'm still buying Nikon stuff, I recently got the 50mm f2 AI. Congrats on the Leica Q! I'm sure you worked hard for it so no guilt needed! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You just bought perhaps the sharpest Nikkor lens ever (the AIS I was speaking). I opted for the Zeiss 50mm/1.4 Planar T* instead, but if I come across the 50/1.2 at a good price I will probably get it to go with my 21, 28, and 105/2.5 to complete my set. Just a note I compared the q2 monochrom to a b&w conversion from my Z7 of the same scene and there is not comparison- q2 mono wins hands down. I would look at the SL or SL2 but I have too much invested in my Nikkor and Zeiss ZF glass to make the change. I hope to hear more about your SL experience.
@@GBB70 thanks Gary, happy to hear the Nikkor 50/2 is a good one. Yes the 1.2 is nice. I have that. I need to try it on the SL. Sorry to hear the Leica is better than the Z bodies. They say always look forward not back so perhaps it might be worth trying to sell the Z kit at one point and get an SL or whatever makes you happy. Yes I’ll do more SL vids in the coming weeks, stay tuned!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think you misunderstood. I love my Z system. I shoot Zeiss and Nikkor AIS lens and have no plans to get a Leica SL or SL2. But I do love q2 Monochrom. There is a difference between shooting color and editing them in B&W vs q2 monochrom. I do both but when shooting other than 28mm I post process color to B&W.
As per your smile on your face talking about your new toy it is great. Good move... enjoy it... Can't wait for the next videos comparaison using SL and other cameras and lenses. Well done ! ... now I'm jalous I want one !
Speaking of depreciation: I bought my SL used here in the US for $2k. Six months later here I am trying to sell it for $1600 and I can’t get anyone to bite.
Thanks, it’s more a buyers market currently as people are selling to buy the SL2S. I got close to the lowest UK price boxed etc so hopefully will be ok if ever did sell. This video might help yours sell with some luck ha! Fingers crossed for you!
Hi Matt! I am about to buy a M10-R with two current state Leica M lenses. I want full frame, Leica and to travel as light as possible. Now you have unsettled me. Does your focus problem exist mainly because you shoot with vintage lenses, and especially at close range? I shoot landscape, street and architecture. Portrait is rather an exception for me. I have no rangefinder experience. What would you advise me to do? M10-R or SL2-S? The M lenses have been decided.
Hi Ralf, sorry for my late answer. Hopefully I caught you in time. If you have no RF camera experience you’ll probably find the SL2-S much more familiar. No the focus issue will affect every lens, the best APO lenses or a cheap Soviet LTM mount lens. If you bump a Leica M camera hard enough after that you may not have accurate focusing until you get the camera fixed again. If you are “out in the field” and want a bomb proof Leica that you don’t want to worry about get the SL series cameras. If you are buying the R for the higher MP then consider the SL2 also so you get the same resolution as the R body. I continue to love my SL + non-SL lenses. More videos will follow. If you have more questions reach out to me on social media if you use it. My Instagram is @MrLeicaCom
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, I just want to let you know that I bought an M11 and the Visoflex 2. And I’m very happy with that. I take 90% of my images with the rangefinder and only the 75mm and longer with the EVF. It’s a pricy solution 😩 but nevertheless I’m in love with it. One question to the focusing. I noticed that the focusing my 35mm and 21mm lenses with the rangefinder is noticeable more precise than with the EVF and the focus peaking. I think it’s caused by a higher tolerance for the focus peaking. The EVF already indicates that something is in focus. But in the rangefinder you can see exactly that this is.not the case. Can you confirm this?
@@ralfferfi2860 congrats Ralf! Focus peak can be set to low and that might help. If the M11 has a zoom in button like my old M240 so I zoom in always with an evf to get exact focus. See my recent SL settings video even though a different camera. Same process if using EVF. I wouldn’t use EVF for wider than 40mm unless say a 35mm 1.2 @0.5m. If you need further assistance feel free to reach out via MrLeica.com/zoom
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yes, I had viewed your video and your comments are well taken. Hard to justify my spending that big sum of money, so I would rather go for the vintage 90 mm pre-ASPH Summicron. Thanks.
Hi David, for the price difference 50% less, I can always pick up a SL2 in a few years if I think I need more MP. They brought out the SL2S because people didn’t need all those MP for most situations.
I am confused. The size and weight and use of vintage lenses on the rangefinder was your process. I don’t think I can go ‘big’ again. sL is just too big. I feel like you flipped :)
Thanks Eric, I’m not travelled since Covid so small has become less of a need currently. I’m keeping all my smaller lighter cameras for when I need that but in the UK I’m happy to use bigger if it means I can get better photos. I’m still learning each day ..
Wow, it seems you're spoiled for choice now, the SL sounds like it's the way to go for Leica M lenses using lens adaptors. On the other hand, Leica L mount lenses on a SL seem for me, to be a step back from where I have been, this and last year using Q & M compact cameras. I can see from Flickr your M mount digital images are awesome regardless of any rangefinder shortcomings. Geat video, keep the content coming........
Nice video Matt ! I hesitated very long as i always had the impression the SL is too heavy, actually its not, feels great in hands. Decision came after i used the Q which has a same or similar sensor as the SL. Now i rarely use the M240 and think to sell it although I have an emotional Binding with my M240Afree with the difference vs Sl2, Cost but more important I dont need these high resoluton.. Biggest difference I see in the skin-tones and the colors out of the SL are just perfect!. So regret. I use the SL with Sigma L mount lenses (i-series). I will keep the M lenses for the M4-P and maybe sell the M240 in a few months when i feel i don't really use it anymore. this maybe would pay an upgrade to SL2-s
Hi Cemal, thanks! Glad to hear you are enjoying your SL too! Yes i'm really surprised how I quickly I felt comfortable with the SL (over the CL and M240). I will do videos for both and vs Lumix S5 for completeness too. Stay tuned! :)
You explained well why you bought the SL. But you are in a special position as a Leica teacher. As nice as the SL is, there are far better options out there now, especially the SL2 and SL2s.
Thanks Elderin! I would say I’m happy to please with a basic body and just nice lenses so I don’t feel I need the latest camera model. Yes as you say I just need Leica to teach Leica.
Someday Leica M will also have a dual focus mode (Auto and manual focus) like Leica Q (need to have Dedicated lense thou).. if they go for that is a time for me to buy the Leica M ..🤔
lol yes, the LUMIX developed a sudden fault! I need to check it. I was in London all day teaching today so not had chance to look at it yet. Yes loving the SL thanks!

Hi Matt!! Do you have an opinion on the Leica MA film camera? I had been looking around and using your site to review maybe getting a M4-P. However, I just discovered I"m getting a good bit of money back on taxes, and I found a good deal on the MA camera. I like the looks of it (looks like my M10M, with stealth mode). I've not found any of your videos talking about the MA....or the MP which is pretty much the MA with a light meter and glossy paint. I'm of the thought that I'd like to get the best and newest Leica film camera, fully mechanical that I can. That this will long outlast any of the recent digital sensor bodies, and that newer is better, for less wear and tear. Thoughts on this in general and any specifics on the MA? Thank you in advance, CC
@@chilecayenne hi yes great camera for sure. A guy in the states asked me a similar question via a Zoom meeting a month ago and he went with the MP for his needs. Same mindset as you, by newer and will last your lifetime easily (even if your 18yrs) I’ve never owned the MA or MP as I picked up older bodies before the prices increased. I’ll try to test them someday so I can do a review.
Funny that the LUMIX S5 packed up. I’ve been wondering why there are a huge number of used / barely used S5’s on sale everywhere. I’m glad I waited since Panasonic’s customer care is predictably appalling. The list of faults with this camera seems to be infinite. If only Panasonic could sort these issues out, put the S1 viewfinder in it and adopt a better attitude to its customers I would buy one without question. You never said anything regarding the often reported poor battery life in the Leica SL and the idiotically high price of these batteries. I have been waiting for SL prices to stabilise but the battery issue might nag at me too much for me to relax enough to use the camera. A few comments on your experience with battery life would have been welcome. The Leica CL looks good but is too expensive for a non image stabilised camera. So manual lenses are a non starter, unless I want a headache. Again the CL lenses are over priced especially since they are probably made by Fuji. The Leica M11 only proved the point that rangefinder systems are pointless and inaccurate, but the fondle factor is high with Leica rangefinders. I would like to play with a Leica SL but that involves a nine hour return journey by car. Maybe just stick with my Rolleiflex shooting black and white film only. I can’t afford colour film now.
Hi Des, if you can get to one of my workshops you can try my SL. Battery lasts almost all day for a wedding when using M glass. AF lenses will drain it faster. My S5 is still going but I rarely use it. SL so much better. (See later video S5 be SL).
The need for calibration really makes me want to get rid of my m10 m. It wouldn’t be a big deal if Leica was quick about repairs, and didn’t take 8 WEEKS to return the camera. Like, being out of commission for 1/6th of the year every year is obnoxious. They really need to increase their servicing footprint to bring those times down.
LUMIX provides Leica lots of tech Nice video as always The sl1-2-s are nice But the Canon r5 and Sony A1 are more advanced Congratulations on new Leica Please make some videos on the SL
Thanks Jon! Yes agreed there are lots of more advanced options. Leica are good at making timeless digital bodies.. like the M8/M9! We don't need all the mod cons to make amazing photos with Leicas :) Yes SL photos and videos to come, stay tuned!
Thanks yes it probably makes sense to stay with Fuji if you shoot Fuji if you are happy with the images. I think considering it is a Leica the price used is now pretty good. They hold their price better than most other brands.
