People with normal eyesight have the wavelength maxima of red and green cones farther apart. Those with red/green weakness have them closer together, so they have a much larger overlapping section of green and red sensitivity and, thus, cannot distinguish red and green as easily. The colors are mushed together to some yellowish/brownish color. The glasses have a narrow filter that cuts out a chunk of the wavelengths where red and green are overlapping, so the brain can now see clearer what belongs to the red curve and what to the green curve - the ambiguous section is just missing. With theses glasses they still see a little less than people with normal eyesight, but that won't make much of a difference.

@@dave5265 That's because the genetic code for the color sensitive proteins (opsines) is located on the X chromosomes, of which men (usually) have only one and women have two (sometimes more). A man has the color deficiency if his only X is affected. A woman with one "broken" X still has another X as fallback. Only if both X are affected a woman has the deficiency, which of course is much rarer. (BTW: Y chromosomes are male, but X chromosomes are not female.)

Why? These glasses are a scam. They dont see colors they usually dont see. not the LIGHT is the problem the EYE is. Its as if you would have a yellow and red bell pepper and have RED LED LIGHT shining on them. They look pretty identical. But shine green light on them and the red one suddenly turns BLACK. This is how these glasses work. You see DIFFERENT but you lose other colors. Because now the yellow bell pepper might be hard to differentiate from a green one becaus the green light makes the yellow look green too.

It can be a profoundly emotional experience for many, esp. children. I wish the instructions for the glasses would also include some behavioral "tips" for family and friends. If the recipient is genuinely moved by the event, they probably don't need the "Oh look. He's crying. Are you crying?" comments or the "What color is this? What's this color? And what color is this, and this, and this?" questions. Maybe just be quiet and let the recipient have their remarkable experience, uninterrupted.

I was born with congenital cataracts. They slowly became worse during the course of my life, gradually clouding my vision until I was legally blind. Finally, about 5 years ago, I had eye surgery. For nearly a month afterward, I would simply stare at common objects, like a bottle of dish soap or a car's tail lights, because everything seemed magical. I would compare it to going from seeing the world as a muted watercolor painting to then seeing everything in ultra-vivid cinematic HD.

I always think that the best invention ever is the lens that led to glasses. I wear glasses and so are who knows how many millions. If we did not have them we would all be almost disabled. Can you imagine how different life would be for all of us. I never took this miracle for granted it always amazes me.

What about microscopes. When the first doctor to tell other doctors to wash their hands, they put him in an insane asylum. (Ok there is some more to the story but that part is true.) They did not know why that would make a difference. Germ theory wasn't developed until after the microscope.

I used to know someone color blind he did LSD once and i was his sober sitter. He told me that he could see colors he's never seen before. He was almost in tears. I couldn't imagine the rush of emotions you get when seeing a color for the first time.

I only watch the first three minutes cause I didn’t wanna keep crying. However each of those men who were color blind and like the first 3 1/2 minutes seem to have hearts of gold. They were so sweet and sensitive… I wonder if there’s a connection.

That's a very good point. The colourblind guys all seem very lovely, genuine sensitive human beings. I searched Narcissists and colour-blindness and nothing came up, Lol. Just in case mean people don't ever have colour blindness! Then I stumbled upon "Does Colour Blindness Affect Behaviour" and read "When undiagnosed it can lead to a child being labelled with behavioural or learning difficulties" so perhaps the negative life experiences have made them more sensitive? (in a good way obviously)

Undoubtedly similar to my reaction after having cataracts removed a few months ago. Vision changes due to cataracts happen so slowly that when the cataract is suddenly gone, the difference in vision is truly life changing!!

As I'm sure other people have mentioned, although these videos are lovely to watch, these people are NOT 'seeing colour for the first time'. The term colour blindness in misleading. Very few people are totally blind to colour and see in black and white. People who are classified as 'colour blind' have a range of different types of colour blindness meaning there are certain colours they can't distinguish. For example, the English lad who mentioned that the red didn't look brown anymore was typical of a certain type who can't distinguish the colour red and it seems dull or brown. You refer to another boy as being 'partially colour blind'. You don't get it. They are all partially colour blind. By the way, if the narrator, who is constantly intrusive and annoying, had not talked all the way through what he said when he identified the balloon colours before he put on the special glasses it would have given a great insight into the nature of the condition. Sadly, he talked over most of it. Anyway, these glasses bring out these colours and allow them to be seen or distinguished. They are not seeing colour for the first time. They are seeing certain colours for the first time.

So true, Barry B. When I joined the U.S. military (more than 50 years ago), part of the physical exam was a color blindness test featuring ten circles with numbers in them. I"m sure you've probably seen those tests. They are circular, with lots of little circles within the main circles, each tiny one a different color to slightly camouflage the number you're supposed to be able to see. We were shown ten circles, and I didn't see a number in any of them. I was shown one more circle, and saw the number clearly. The man giving the test had me read the caption of the last circle, which, of course, said "if you can read this number, you are color blind". He had the next ten guys in line do the test, and all of them could read the ten numbers but not the last one as I had done. Despite my failure on this test, I was as amazed as anyone else when Dorothy left her house and entered the land of OZ! I see colors. I just see them differently, and have great difficultly distinguishing subtle differences in shades within one color. Autumn leaves are pretty to me, but they always make me wish I could borrow my wife's eyes, even for just a few minutes.😄

As a follow up to my earlier comment, later in my navy days, when I was a cook on a base in Florida, chief po told me and another guy to go outside and pick roses to decorate the chow line. Yeah, sounds silly, but real men appreciate pretty chow lines....anyway, of course I saw NO roses, while the other picker found a dozen in a hurry. He was mad at me until I explained. Then he would point them out so I wouldn't be chewed out by the chief for being lazy!

Colourblind people do see colour. However some colours merge and blend into one another, making it difficult for them to differentiate between colours, and not be able to appreciate all the different markings, on a colourful bird, as an example. They cannot see the full spectrum of colours, when they are placed together, in a painting, for instance, or a spectacular scene in nature, with all its variety. They do not see in black and white, or something like that, contrary to popular belief. This video is misinforming people, implying that colourblind people cannot see colour. I know this because my father was colourblind, and unfortunately I passed the genes on to both my sons. They just confuse red and green colours. So, they cannot see red berries, on a green shrub or tree, for instance. So the green and red colours merge, and they will only see green, perhaps. Also they might get confused at traffic lights, as they might not know whether the green light or red light is showing, which could be dangerous. Nevertheless, colourblind people have compensated, by ascertaining at which position the lights are. I think the glasses are a wonderful innovation, which gives them the opportunity, to enjoy the variety, and full spectrum of colours, in all their beauty, so that their world can open up to the incredible variety in nature, and in all other aspects in the world. There is a very rare form of colourblindness, that is in fact very debilitating, where people only see in a type of monochrome. However, this is extremely rare, and the majority of colourblind people, are not as badly affected, as that.

@@tonib.3016 People are making a bigger issue than what this is. Having brought up two children who are colour blind, I do know what I am talking about. There was never an issue about colour. They knew their colours.at the appropriate age, and could name them. However, they may have experienced and seen those colours differently. They may have said a colour was red, but might have seen it as another type of brown, perhaps. Nevertheless, I was not even aware that my children were colourblind, until they were tested, as it was never an issue. This, in no way hampered their cognitive development. People over dramatise things, and it need not be so.

Your wife’s genes pass the color blind trait… your kids were doomed either way. Btw, did you know that the US Government found that colorblind people make the best snipers? Color blind animals (including humans) have better pattern recognition and can spot camouflaged predators/prey.

@@RSMoreno Exactly, that is why my son was a field guide in an exclusive game reserve in South Africa, before he went overseas. Poaching, and having his life threatened, numerous times, decided him to leave so that his child would not one day be murdered, in that very toxic environment. Btw, in spite of my pseudonym, I am female, and passed the colour blindness on to my sons.

Cause even if it doesnt impact you that much in your daily life, seeing the colors the way they actually are, can be so emotional as we see here.

@@stephenolan5539It depends on the level of impairment. My father was colorblind and didn't know because it only affected the red spectrum. Some people see in mostly muddy greys and blues. For them it would be an amazing change.

I was given a pair of these by my co-workers at my retirement party. Simply an astonishing expeirence. One I will never, ever forget. I could not have been gifted anything nicer and more heartfelt. As well, most colorblind people have a depth perception problem. I's not like living in 2D it's more so unnoticed until you see through these for the first time. Not quite as dramatic but all I can compare it too is like looking through one of those old stereograph manual players way back when we were kids..........

I'm red/green colourblind and once tried on a co-worker's normal glasses when we were out, there was a hazy red fog that day and when i put her glasses on, everything looked crisp and kind of like cardboard cutouts, like when watching a 3D movie, is that what you mean?

As a "color blind" person, I'd like to clear up some misconceptions. 1. The term "color blind" is misleading and should not be used because it perpetuates the stereotype that the person can not see any color whatsoever. The correct term is "color vision deficiency" or CVD. For instance, I have red/green color deficient vision. Complete absence of color vision is extremely rare and is known as monochromacy. 2. People with color vision deficiency are on a spectrum, ranging from very mild to very profound deficiencies. I can differentiate many shades of red/green but not all. I would be considered mild to moderate color deficient with my vision. 3. Having color vision deficiency does not decrease cognitive function. The little bit of scientific information available suggests that the opposite may be true but more research needs to be done in this area. I graduated high school with honors. Twelve years ago at the age of 49, I went back to school to earn a degree in healthcare. I graduated with a 3.95 GPA in physical therapy and was elected president of my class. My brother, also CVD did not do as well in school. There are so many factors affecting intelligence, it would be very difficult to parse out CVD as a primary factor. 4. Although the rods and cones are utilized for seeing detail, color deficient vision does not necessarily affect other aspects of vision. I've had 20/15 vision my whole life and got my first pair of glasses at age 45. 5. People with color deficient vision learn to adapt to their situation, just as anyone else having what is considered by the general population as a "handicap" do, in their specific area of function. I adapted to my situation and made a living in a very visual intensive field as a professional photographer for 27 years. I photographed people and products for magazine advertisements and consumer packaging that was seen by millions of people around the world. 6. Currently, there is no cure for color deficient vision. Enchroma states this on their website. 7. Enchroma glasses DO NOT fix or cure color deficient vision. Enchroma states this on their website. 8. Enchroma glasses only enhance the color a person already has by increasing the apparent contrast. This may allow some people to distinguish shades of certain colors that they were not able to previously. Enchroma states this on their website. 9. People with color deficient vision will most likely still fail a "color blind" test while wearing Enchroma or similar type glasses. 10. There are advantages with color vision deficiency. People with CVD can more easily detect camouflaged items since camouflage is designed to fool people with "normal" color vision. People with CVD are more sensitive to texture and patterns in these situations. I hope this clears up some misconceptions regarding color vision deficiency.

Keep in mind, as stated in my initial post, you will be seeing increased contrast of colors. You won't be seeing new colors. My dad truly was "color blind.". Everything was gray to him. My sister and I both have mild red/green deficiency. People tell us that women are never " color blind." But when my sister sees gray and I see pink, we know it's really purple. I see color, but can't always distinguish what color I see. Is it pink? Is it purple? I dunno, but would love to look through those glasses.

This reminds me of some pictures of how birds see other birds compared to how we see them. When we see those little brown camo birds you can fit in your hand, other birds see him with very vibrant colors with steaks of neon, blue, and very colorful overall but we see them as just shades of brown, white, black, etc...

Having been able to see the world as God created it, I never thought about how NOT being able to see color would effect people or what it would be like for them if they one day could. I assume these people had really bad vision and were prob more crying out of shock of how impaired their vision is. Or perhaps they are just very emotional people. Most people have little to no reaction and the ones shared online are the extreme cases of emotion. My guess.

These people are not totally "color blind." They see too much of certain colors, which doesnt allow the rest of the light spectrum in. These glasses work in a reverse process, to tone down the colors they see too much of and allow the rest of them in.

You have it backwards. Colorblindness is caused by a LACK of certain color cone receptors in the eye, red/green, or blue/yellow. The right glasses can replace those missing cones, so people can see the colors they couldn't without them. It's got nothing to do with seeing 'too much ' of any color.

Do not have color blindness but after cataract surgery chrome sparkled. It was brighter then bright. White was more white. It settled to normal after a time. It was shocking, and a bit awe making. They r not crying only from the experience of the moment but for that little kid who lived without color.

Colorblindedness is NOT the inability to see colors!!! It's simply a deficient or abnormally formed color receptor in the eye that causes confusion with certain colors, like red & green. I was categorized as being "red/green color blind", yet I still see the color "red" as well as the color "green", and every other color for that matter. However, there are times when certain shades of colors are confused with other colors, and the brain simply can't figure out which color it is the eyes are seeing. But it's not like walking around in a "black & white" movie all the time, which is what this video tends to suggest.
