In this Chemistry video in Hindi for class 11 we explained energies of different atomic orbitals in single-electron atom/ions as well as in multi--electron atoms/ions. For single-electron atom/ions the energy of an orbital is entirely dependent upon its principal quantum number, but in multi--electron atoms/ions the energy depends upon the principal as well as azimuthal quantum number. when two or more orbitals have the same energy, they are called degenerates. To compare the energies of different orbitals in multi--electron atoms/ions we have two rules :
1) The more the value of (n+l), the more is the energy.
2) When two orbitals have the same value of (n+l) the energy is decided by the principal quantum number, i.e., more the principal quantum number, the more is the energy.
