I have always had a soft spot for the old Schneider designed Super Angulon 21mm 3.4 Lens, but today I know it cannot compete with modern designed Lenses. A few weeks ago I got the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 which is a great little wonder !
This is my favourite Leica lens, and along with the 75mm F2 APO-Summicron, the only one that I bought new about 15 years ago. Mine came with a Leica 21mm EXT finder which has a lever that locks it on to the hot shoe. Still it pays to be careful with them. The optical performance of this lens is something else, and perhaps it even exceeds that of my 21mm Zeiss Biogon G2 lens.
Nice! Yes it would have been nice to shoot it next to my 21 Biogon ZM. I feel the Zeiss has the edge for my B&W but technically the Leica might be more corrected.
I use a Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21 (from the classic range) adapted to the A7RIII. These were originally £1,900! I got a mint one in Nikon F for £440, so a good option if you shoot mirrorless and want a cheap, very, very high quality 21mm.
Excellent video Matt Nice edit, good pace, very informative and spot on examples to show what you are talking about. Good stuff Carry on Glad you having a great time with Peter and Bec. Just saw the blog video with Shai and went to her web-shares with photos, great stuff IMO, I like the rough stuff. Anyways great weekend and see ya laaaaaaterrrrr
Interesting vid. The widest I shoot is 28. I recently had a similar camera problem. The screw-in lens cap on the Bertele was still on. It is a relief to learn that I am not alone in this. ;o) Cheers
Before my Leica M6, I use a Contax G1 with a 21mm f/2.8 wide-angle lens. When I bought my Leica M6, I bought a 21mm f/1.4 Leitz wide-angle lens which I use with the Contax accessory viewfinder.
Great hack!!! I have a TTArtisans meter that is loose on some cameras and normal on others!!! The pigeon shots are awesome!!! I use a Voigtlander wide angle my Bessa L and just zone focus and use it as a point and shoot!!!
Great landscapes, relics and people, pigeons are 👍 👌. I missed 21 superangulon with M3. And 28mm f5.6 too. I will use 21mm superangulon with barnakto spend b/w films.
nice lens; i never got one because it is a bit "bulky" for the intended use. I have the Voiglander 21/4, which is a great performer and gives you the same look. BTW, i notice you still have not cleaned your sensor!!! 🙂 poor camera!
I run a 21mm Voigtlander f/3.5 II on a Leica M5. Due to the stem-mounted meter sensor in the camera I don't seem to get good metering with this lens. I think the back of the lens bends the metering sensor post backwards. So I just use my iPhone meter. 21 & 24mm lenses are my favorite wides on a 35mm camera. I am using a TTArtisan accessory viewfinder. I find it a good value, but if you have the money for a brightline viewfinder versus an accessory full-frame viewfinder I would buy it. The other thing I have noticed is that even with the old Voigtlander 21mm brightline viewfinder, and being right-eye dominant, is that I almost always have my pics lean left. This never happens while using the M5 viewfinder for 35mm and longer lenses. That being said, wide is my bag. I rarely shoot longer than 35mm for my environmental pics on full-frame 35mm film or digi-pics. Thanks for your excellent content.
Thanks! I have a video on the 3.5 to come so stay tuned! I love the Voigtlander finders but they are expensive and big(ish). I've never had a problem viewing with all my finders but that might just be me.
Lovely images, especially the off the hip nun shots. With regards to the external viewfinder and me asking probably a daft ?, can any of the Q cameras use one such as a visoflex? Thanks.
Thanks! No you can't use EVF on Q bodies, only optical finders but if you want it for low angles an optical finder is less helpful (I might have a video coming on optical finders on the Q..)
I got the same voigtlander viewfinder, there's distortion which affects the way I compose the picture, I wonder if leica 21mm viewfinder is the same ..
great video Matt, have not got a Leica M camera but i use my Lumix GX7 with a 12-32mm lens great little camera for street photography and its got a flip up view finder too......
This video comes at a time where someone is selling his 21mm f3.4 and I'm wondering if it's worth it. Question I have is, does de color shifting on the edges get corrected with the embedded profile in the M-240?
I'm not 100% sure and I don't have access to the lens now. I see the same issue with other 21mm lenses too and I probably tried using profiles in my early days with the M240. I tend not to use them now.
Attaching an external electronic viewfinder that tilts doesn’t make much sense to me in cost and use. I’d much rather just buy a camera with a tilting screen if I need that sort of shooting style.
It's the only option for Leica users but yes Lumix and others will have flip screens (and for the price of the M11 Visoflex you can buy a used Lumix S5 I think!)
21MM with a minimum focus distance of 70CM = 70% useless. One of the great things about wide angle lenses is the ability to emphasize the foreground, and create a strong sense of depth in a photo. As of 7/14/23, utilizing native Leica lenses, this technique and style of photo is not possible for the M shooter. While I love the rendering of my 28MM Summilux it never gets used due to the 70CM limit; however; the new 35MM Summilux never gets detached from the M11. I love to shoot street with the M system, alot of fun and rewarding, but the M is a crippled system where great photos can be had despiste antiqated system and lens designs, not beacusre of..
I am a fan of wide-angle focal-lengths wider than 28mm; I have found that vast majority of my photos have been shot with 20mm -24mm settings on my lens. However I have this belief right or wrong that wide-angle lenses show off their characteristics better on print sizes of at least A2 size or larger. Matt I am a 49 year old man from London, I learnt analog photography from age 16, used to process my own 35mm B&W films and make prints using a enlarger. So it won't be any surprise to you that my ideal camera would be a Nikon F3T with a digital back and a 36 MP sensor. To me the most important criteria for a camera is that it must be built using metal/s, hence why I hate amateur cameras with their plastic bodies. And modern cameras are so over-saturated with features and so many buttons to the point where one can be overwhelmed. But I am certain that Neither Cannon or Nikon will ever manufacture a professional grade Mirrorless that is almost a carbon copy of the F3T with 90% less features than a Z8, no auto-focus, but with a Magnesium alloy body, and brass top and bottom plates. Anyhow I don't expect you to reply to this, bye.
Thanks for checking out the video! I'm a 45 year old man from London :) I too like metal cameras so I use older Nikon film cameras (FM2, FE2, F4, F5 and others) but mostly Leica, all the film models and the simple metal digital ones too. If you want a simple metal digital camera I think everyone would agree that a Leica is the only option. Look at a used SL (24MP) and they are cheaper than new Canon and Nikon models. (SL2 is 47MP.. I know you said 36MP, but they cost more). ..I still need to get a F3T at some point!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hello Matt. Thank you for replying, however I don't expect you to reply because I know you have a family and need to earn a living thus are busy. I am surprised that you are a Londoner, I thought you were based in Scotland. By the way, as well as photography, I am also a London Underground enthusiast, my interest in the Underground developed because I was born with a disability, so from infancy until age 26 I had to make regular hospital visits, so it was from age 2 I became fascinated with the Underground, I don't like the modern red white and blue digital Underground trains, I sorely miss the old ones. Mind you the Underground is a great place to do street-photography. I don't expect you to reply to this, bye.
