I think the whole niching down kind of thing has been beaten to death in recent years. But using logic, if you do portraits and car photography and have separate pages for both, you are essentially doubling your chances of showing up in results. That's just math. Link your pages, but have them separate. You want customers to find exactly what they're looking for without distraction, but have a link somewhere that leads to your other work. I don't understand boxing yourself in. I understand focusing and trying to shine in one area to get noticed, but we're not working out of portfolios anymore and the photography market is flooded in many areas. People don't want the best of the best anymore, they just want decent value for their money, and being a well rounded photographer provides that. They ask if you can do a picture of the property and you tell them you only do sidewalks, they're going to get someone willing to diversify. So much of photography is transferrable. By boxing yourself in, you're not taking advantage of the time and work you've already put into learning photography. It's like learning to bake chocolate cake and only chocolate cake. Just take those baking skills a little further and you can serve an entirely new group of customers and explore other flavors and textures. It's incredible value for the smallest of psychological investments. Carty, I gleam immense value from your channel and I respect you to the ends of the earth. This is simply the opinion I arrived at after listening to a lot of professional photographers and through my own research and experience. I tried to niche down to just event photography, but people wanted basic videography or b-roll, drone footage, macro and product shots, portraits and accompanying studio sessions. I've lost jobs in this area for being unwilling or unable to bend in another direction and I'm realizing to be successful in today's market, you need to offer multiple services. I think if you're already successful in one area of photography, it makes sense to suggest narrowing your vision because that's what got you noticed. That's what you had to do to get noticed. But for today's photographers looking to break into the business, niching down just seems close doors.

i appreciate you thoughts. if you deep dive on any of my past content you'll hear me say if you shoot weddings and cars, have 2 sites because it confuses your customers. completely agree. as far as spreading yourself thin as a newer pro trying to shoot several niches i believe is hardly the route to any type of mastery. i started with fashion, shot that exclusively for 5years. then added portraits, advertising, and lifestyle. all under the people umbrella. i've shot cars, products, weddings and more but i don't show them because it's not what i want to shoot. for some one in your position yes. i agree with you. but for a newer shooter trying to establish themselves, not niching down hurts them. photographers get known for one thing. every household name shooter got known for one thing and then expanded. i'm not against shooting in multiple niches and having separate sites. not everyone can manage this. you make it seem so easy. focus is what most are lacking. so my thoughts on niching down come from 33yrs of experience. and seeing so many fail that try to do too many things. i'm just one voice. you can't truly achieve mastery at any one thing unless you just do that one thing. you gave an example of baking a cake. i'm giving the example of the tartan bread maker in new york. he just bakes bread. he makes the best bread on earth. i'm sure he could bake and sell cookies but he makes bread. and he's the best there is. mastery comes from focus. most shooters lack that. which is why they never get to the level of karsh, avedon, penn, weston, rankin, watson, schoeller, newton. because they do what they want to do. not seeking mastery in what they are best at.

@@stevecarty I absolutely agree and appreciate your perspective. I guess the way I see it is the tartan baker could not have built the skills to master that one bread nor acquired the capital to open his bakery without perhaps making bagels and other breads for years beforehand. When I used to start a cook in a kitchen, they'd start at the dish pit, so they know where their tools and utensils are. They tend to be much more careful about burning things to the bottom of pans after scrubbing a few of them and they get used to the flow of our particular kitchen in a way that doesn't disrupt service. Once they're quick enough there, they begin prep, so they know every sprinkle of seasoning in every dish, in case one needs to be made or changed on the fly. This person is not a dishwasher or prep cook, but they are better able to do their job as a chef because of the experience and have three positions they can go forward to fill instead of one. They may be lower paying, but they'll get you to the next job. I wouldn't trust someone who walked into my kitchen and said they were just a cook. They would be lost and confused, burning pans and using unnecessary utensils while adding unreasonable amounts of seasoning salt to dishes that don't call for it. That being said, if they were trained as a bartender, server, dishwasher, prep and line cook, they'd be pretty worthless in any of those positions. So how much is too much? Clients have a list of wants and needs and they change like the seasons, but how do you secure those clients if you don't have the whole package or know someone else who does? It feels like a bidding war down here at the bottom and anything extra you can provide is the difference between landing the job and going home with your tail between your legs. So many of us are learning most of this from RU-vid, from creators we like, on subjects we're interested in. I feel like by narrowing in so much, we lose out on learning forms of photography that may enhance our skills photographing our chosen niche. I cannot step to 33 years of experience, but as someone who is trying to do this full time for a living in a rural community. I can maybe point out some approaches and philosophies that do and don't work for me in my area and market. I mean no disrespect, Carty, you are the master. Lol. But I do mean to kind of stoke the fires a bit. Everyone says to niche down, but how does that pan out functionally when you're starting out and what can you do to be flexible enough to retain clients despite not offering all the services they want from a photographer?

So funny I’ve also said if you live in a small market, specializing is next to impossible. So we are aligned to my friend I live in the biggest market in the country I also am two hours from the US which I work in a lot I fly to Europe and work, UK, Mexico. When you make high frequency work, that’s in high demand, people feel no way about putting you on a plane. My camera and skillstack has taken me many places. Think bigger and, you might think yourself right out of that small town
