Of my 2 Leica 90mm lenses the Leica 90mm f4 Macro-Elmar-M is both the most sharp and the smallest. Although not a true macro lens the Leica Elmar 90mm is still great for macro lens portrait photos being both a short telephoto lens and sharp. In this video I share digital 90mm photos using my Leica M240 and Leica CL mirrorless and some film scans shot with a Leica M3 camera. The Leica Macro Elmar 90mm lens is a collapsible design making it a very compact lens design and a perfect Leica lens for travel photography.

Nice lens! I have the 90mm Tele-Elmarit (the "chubby" one) and that's one of my favourites. I think it's the sharpest Leica lens i own, actually. Really nice combination the old pre-asph look and the more modern super sharp look. Sadly no macro function with focus on a film body, but I use it on the M240 with the oufro macro ring for head shots. Works great!

Great video Matt, I have two 90mm lenses for my M system, I have the Summicron v1 Canada, which I absolutely love the image quality of, but the size and weight is a bit of a bother, it is fairly unbalanced while shooting, front heavy on my M2. And the other I own, is the Minolta 90mm f/4 Rokkor M, which is a fantastic everyday carry lens, compact and lightweight, and top notch performance. I love both lenses for different reasons.

Matt, as always, great review. My 90mm Leica is the Tele-Elmarit 2,8/90mm (11800). It's light, small, sharp, affordable (for Leica), fast, but of course lacks the macro capability. Otherwise, I do think it's a perfect match for my M3. Cheers, Daniel

Very impressive. I am beginning to think if I should purchase this macro lens although I have been using using a Tele-Elmarit 90 mm (thin version) and an APO Summicron 75 mm ASPH for portrait photography with pleasing results. Its 240 gram weight and short length should be great for traveling and shooting insects and flowers in a tropical or rain forest.

Thanks for the review. It gave me the information I needed. I was looking for a lens that was better at close-focusing on my M6 than my Leitz 90mm f/2. The 90mm Tele-Elmarit is better at close-focus but its high cost and its slow f/4 maximum aperture prevent me from buying this lens.

I've owned a 90mm Marco elmar since 2016 and while it's not my most used lens, I'd never part with it. This lens when paired with a 50mm summilux and a 28mm summicron makes for a perfect three lens setup. It's also wonderful when used on an SL2/SL2s 👍

I'm able to borrow a 90mm Macro Elmar with the Macro adaptor from my father. He tells me he also has a macro rail along with an M to L adapter. I own a Panasonic Lumix S1r and with it I hope to take some macro images using the High Resolution mode. I have an idea of cutting away a flower and shooting the petals to give a kind of insects eye view. I'm not interested in shooting looking down. It will be a month before I can get to visit my father and he's not likely to lend me the lens for a great period of time, so I wondered if you could let me know if you think this lens might fit my needs. I'm new to macro and I wondered if the focussing distance will be problematic. I expect to do this shoot in a studio environment because I cannot have any movement for the high resolution mode to work. Maybe focus breathing will be too much of a problem. If you are able to advise me in any way I'd appreciate it.

I've decided that I want a 28/50/90 lens family for my M. With the 50 sorted, I know I will get more use out of a 90 than a 28 so that is next. The Macro-Elmar would be my #1 choice but it will cost me over NZ$4,000 and I can't afford that at this stage. I managed to find a Elmarit-M for just under NZ$1,500 and have decided to go with that. I figure if at a later stage when I have more money, I can sell the Elmarit-M (it appears to be increasing in value) and get this lens.

Leica made a collapsible 90mm f4 Elmar way back in the 50s/60s. It looks very similar, except for the black paint, but the glass isn't the same at all. No macro function, but a very nice portrait lens. I think it's now one of the very least expensive vintage Leica lenses.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I don't think they're rare. If you search on US eBay right now (for curiosity) there are several collapsible ones. Mostly $150 to $200. I have one; it's interesting and tiny, but I don't think I'd suggest buying one except for historical interest. Or maybe if one wanted a very inexpensive Leica lens. As far as I know, the glass is the same as the non-collapsible Elmar.

Thanks for the review, Matt. I bought this lens right after viewing your video last year! This lens is quite compact and insanely sharp, I used it for Macro(with adapter), landscape, and headshot, plenty of joy! In the daytime or travel I would go with 90mm f4. Now I’m considering to buy an APO 75mm or 90mm F2 due to the demand of low light shooting. Which one do you think performs better at night? I also got 35mm f1.4, 75mm seems more complimentary for the lens combo?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
Yes great lens!! The 75 f2 is a stronger performer and more like the 90/4 for modern rendering. If you are in the UK message me if want that lens. The older 90f2 I use is lovely for portraits but totally different rendering, classic style.

Hello, I find your use cases very interesting and it also fits what I want to do with it. Are you using an M camera with/without EVF? How well does the focusing work for portraits? Usually you want to focus on the near eye of the model and that has to be very precise. I'd be interested to know how often you hit the focus like that?

@@ralfferfi2860 Hi, Ralf. I'm using M10-R. There was no focus issue for me whenever I put my EMF on, it sometimes can be struggle using live view instead, e.g. shooting flowers in short distance with Macro-adapter(0.5m~0.8m). For portraiture image, I haven't found difficulties(with/without EVF) shooting wide open, eye area focus was not a problem. This lens works quite well in daylight condition and insanely sharp.

Macro lenses with modest aperture are allways sharper than any other type of lenses (but some super telephoto lenses can sometimes be as sharp). Leica design their macro lenses to perform good down to halfsize 1:2 and at the same time perform very good at medium and long distance, that means that Leicas macro lenses can be used for allround purpose photography, but if you need the best macro lens performance you need a zeiss or another brand macro lens tht focus down to 1:1 full lifesize and which are designed to do best in macro. Take the Hasselblad lenses, I use many but the sharpest is the Macro Planar 120mm f4 ..and Nikkor glass, the sharpest seem to be the Micro lenses (that's why I bought them).

Hi Simon, funnily enough I have a magnifier video to come. I think I will now go upto lens #10 before switching it up but yes I do. Much easier with loop. I will share soon.

Matt Osborne thanks... I was thinking about an occasional portrait lens for my m8.... but I find the frame lines for 75 and 90.... just too small

Yes that's why I usually use 50mm

The claim is that, even with the macro adapter, it's not super for real macro work. I would like to use such a lens for flowers, insects etc. Any experience anyone ? 🙏

Yes get a proper macro lens. Rangefinder camera lenses don’t focus close verses SLR lenses. Tokina 100mm, Nikkor 55mm, Nikkor 60mm.. there are lots. (I have those 3)

So fucking expensive, I rather look for others brand, unless you can made 500 per shoot then only can consider, if you can gain back the money, what is the point.

You can get a £100-150 vintage 90mm f4 if you on a budget. See video. Great lens
