A few days after making this video, it was fixed (no need for manual update) *A side note - for all viewers - this device, Nvidia Shields, Chromecast with Google TV and many others ALL run ANDROID TV OS. One RU-vidr is claiming that there is a "Google TV OS" - this is 100% False! No such thing. It's simply a different UI/launcher* - Thanks to Nick Williams for the heads up.

You can use a USB drive for storage you just need to go in and enable the developer options by going down clicking on build 10 times and then you’ll see you are now a developer. And then go back to the new menu option you’ll have that says developer and then from there and you can go down and enable USB as an external storage.

I have noticed 2 major problems with this unit (1) the PICTURE settings is missing (2) The Audio/Video is out of SYNC when playing IPTV services. (I have compared it to the KM3). Hopefully an Update could fix this...just my 2cents

@@mortsummer7723 i run it mainly for iptv and plex etc. no audio syncing errors. For me sounds like an iptv provider or third party app issue. I run 4k on Disney or 1080 On iptv all the same

@@mortsummer7723 what picture settings are missing? You've checked settings-device preferences-advanced options-Display-screen resolution? The I-P-TV issue sounds like provider issue as suggested above

Yep third Mecool I've had (KM3 and KD1 to date). This one is sweet - I'd maybe like to see a more powerful one maybe with more ram and a faster cpu, though this one works very well. I'm digging it too my friend!

Haha , I figured that very nice white remote Would easily get dirty. But, I’m sure it’s cleanable as long as u don’t over do it . You probably won’t damage any buttons for anyone trying to clean it just be careful using chemicals so you don’t ruin any buttons. But A top notch review!!! I’d love to see more from you ! (we don’t always want a quick fast review especially on a device like this that most of the community is interested in). I’m sure everyone including myself will Be appreciative of the time you spent on this. one of the best reviews I’ve watched cheers 🍻 bud. 👊.

Hi, does the mecool switch between SDR and HDR colour automatically say during Netflix, or if you set hdr then sdr content is mapped to hdr and looks a little wrong? The shield does this automatically

Going through random reviews of devices I own and this is still the best review on This KM2 device! WELL DONE (device still running everyday ) never had an issue. I got it early with you as well. Suckers gotta pay almost 80$ now. Only 68 when I got it. I strictly use it as. Streamer. 5 big streaming apps including my tv. An works great. Run on Wi-Fi. It’s in far part of my house no Ethernet connection there. And. Still runs strong without dropping. At minimum. 250 mbps. It’s capable of much more than I use it for. But. I cast to it use my browser and Bluetooth & that’s about it besides streaming my 4 k capable apps. Never gets warm btw. 👍. A shame if they don’t update it. Or send anything it’s way regarding ota. But it’ll run great for some time to come the way it is

hi, great video! What about surround audio from the SPIDF output, is it true that it only outputs stereo audio, even when connected to a 1080p TV?

Great review! Thanks for checking the settings for audio passthrough and frame rate matching, however did you or can you test using a player like Plex or Kodi, as there isn't always a dedicated setting listed for those in the Android TV OS settings? Also, I read the KM2 always outputs in HDR (rather than switching between SDR and HDR)? Is that something else that you're able test? Thanks :)

Nope, didn't test with K or Plex. Just installed K and can't locate those settings (even in advanced mode). Where in K settings would they normally be found? On the HDR question I did have some issues and I'm not sure where (or how) exactly I resolved it. I had spent hours trying to work it out as there were no settings I could find in the dislay options section.....In the video you may have noticed I showed netflix with "HDR 4K" and also netflix with "Ultra HD 4k" - they were in fact both done on the KM2 whilst using an elgato hd60 S+ capture card, but as I say I don't remember exactly what I did...hence no mention in the video..... I would like to solve this one though. It may require a firmware update to give those options (the TiVo Stream 4K also had the same issue and that was fixed a few months ago) -unfortunately Mecool aren't particularly big on FW updates unlike the Shields which have had MORE than 20 over the last 5/6 years (thinking the 2015 model)

OK, found 'em - settings-player-video-playback. Options include off, always, on start/stop and on start.... haven't done any testing at all... VERY busy today and this weekend...

@@WOTBoxTV Yeah that's them - set it to "On start/stop", and leave "Sync playback to display" off. The audio setting can be found under Settings -> System -> Audio -> Audio Passthrough. Enable "Allow passthrough", then enable any codecs supported by your audio system. Cheers!

nice video...by the way i have see some strange at 9:53 where Google TV not appear in your country and 16:12 where you cannot use this remote on TV.... i have questions on 9:53, for now does this box still using standard atv launcher or changed to Google TV UI? and questions on 16:12,does issue have fixed (i mean maybe if you have updated software yet and fix this issue)??

As mentioned at 9:53 we updated to a different UI to the one found in UK (and it seems USA as well). Looks like this is determined by Geo location. In theory, it's possible to change the launcher to the Google TV UI - yes. Yes, the issue at 16:12 has now been fixed. A few days after making this video, it was fixed (no need for manual update)

Great video bud. Nice device, I like that it has Ethernet and SD card slot. Too bad about not being able to remap those bottom buttons. I might have to try one out.

Many thanks! I like it - Certainly don't have buyer's remorse 😀. The remote's sweet when used with the KM2, bar that issue of not being able to remap those 4 buttons - what's worse, when paired with the CGTV or ShieldTV (didn't try with any others), those buttons don't work at all.

@@cordcutterscommunity6404 yeah, me too. But what I would have done would have been to add, for example, Kodi on long press on the netflix and Dazn on long press on the Prime button, etc. I just like maximum flexibility in a device - no biggie though, as you say.

At least the ram is DDR4 but I still wish that they had an option for 4 GB. I would still probably get the KM1 or KM6. Those two devices are certified for everything except Netflix. Mecool is definitely one of the best of the Chinese box makers. Mine is ancient and everything still works great

Thank you very much for the video!! I am having some problems running apps in my KM2 (as e.g. instagram), the view is only set to be vertical; I have tried to solve it instaling several apps (as Set Orientation) to change it to "landscape" mode, but none have worked. Do you have any reccomendation to solve this?? I would appreciate it a lot! Thank you very much!

I believe this is a problem with the Set Orientation app as it hasn't been updated for Android 10 (?). I also encountered the same issue with the Chromecast with Google TV.. Don't know of a solution atm - sorry.

Hi good in depth video. 👍 One big question for me personally. Is I have a Sonos soundbar and unfortunately when i plug my Amazon firestick into the hdmi port on my tv and then connect the tv via the optical input on the Sonos soundbar, my tv won’t pass the dolby signal from the firestick to the Sonos, so it only plays in stereo. As you know the firestick doesn’t have an optical output to connect to a Sonos soundbar. However as this has an optical output, do you think it would work if I plugged this KM2 via HDM in to my tv for the picture and then directly plugged the optical output from this into the Sonos soundbar. Do you think this would then give me Dolby Digital/dolby 5:1? Love the Firestick but that is a big problem as a waste of the Sonos soundbar. Appreciate if you don’t have a Sonos soundbar exactly what I mean, but your knowledge on these things seems far superior to mine and any advice would be most welcomed 👍👍👍

I don't have a soundbar, so difficult for me to say yes or no. however, I've tested the optical output on my aging (non 4k Onkyo avr) and passthrough worked for 5.1. Whether or not it will work with your soundbar, I don't know.

As when playing netflix or bbc iplayer from my older Samsungs tv’s smart apps it does play in 5:1 from the tv directly via optical. Its just the firestick signals don’t seem to get pass through. But the KM2 looks decent and thanks to you and Freetech I will get one and give it a go. Thanks again 👍

Do you recommend this over Chromecast with Google TV? I'm trying to decide between 2. I have been using Chromecast2 for many years, never had problems. So I'm leaning more towards the Google brand for future proofing. But this one has all the ports so... (I'll use IPTV too)

personally I like having the ports for extra accessories/drives etc. Others may not need them. I also have the Chromecast with Google TV (and run the unofficial CGTV Facebook group). The CGTV is a great dongle device, I really like it a lot...... but I actually prefer and use this Mecool KM2 more. As I say, it's a personal choice thing...

Live Channels works for me, though I'm only using it with Pluto and Xumo and no DVR. Being Android TV I'd expect it to work - but wouldn't want to guarantee that.

Personally, I'd go for the Mecool KM2 as it's the more modern device. Don't misunderstand me, the Xiaomi is also a good box, though only has DDR3 memory and one USB 2.0

Wish it had 4GB of memory. Have you been able to get a video with Dolby TrueHD to work? Seems to be a common problem with these boxes. Also Android 10 boxes should support AV1 codec.

As with many other devices in this price range, the KM2 has 8gb onboard storage, which equates to around 4gb after subtracting the standard installation firmware. I only used the KM2 plugged into a TV (well 2 TVs in fact), not an AVR, nor soundbar. Hopefully AV1 will be supported soon via a firmware upgrade.

I can't get any air mouse remotes to work properly with this device. The "OK" Button does not work on any of them. Is there a setting I need to change?

This issue is usually down to the remote's built-in firmware. You could try a remapper app like Button Mapper

Do you have a drive in mind? If it's an SSD, it should be fine (I have used a 500gb Samsung SSD set as external storage - no issues). If it's an HDD then they usually already have their own power supplies... hope this helps

@@gozlanmix5952 As in the video around 15:35 - I tried it on 2 TVs, a Xiaomi Mi TV 4S UHD 4K and an 8 year old Samsung HD 1080 UE32ES550 with no luck. I can't say it will fail with all models, but I suspect so... (as I said in the video, basic functions did work) A simple firmware update from MeCool should easily solve it

yes, the supplied hdmi cable works fine with both the 4k tv and the HD 1080 TV we have here. Have also used it with an old cable I had here with the 1080 tv

👍 Yeah agreed, unless you only need a few "mainstream" standards for streaming..... - it's like all the main competition around that price range - 2gb Ram and 8 gb Rom where you only really have about 4gb free for your apps (you'd get 12gb ish if it's a 16gb box). I stuck a 64gb card in to expand the internal storage, much better. And at least that way, it keeps the USB ports free for other stuff.

Odd one there. What you've already done usually solves the issue. If an app plays up, I'll often try one of, or all of the following: Clear app cache, clear data, uninstall updates for that app then unplug, reboot and reinstall updates. Doesn't always work, but does sometimes. In this case, the talkback app is in systems settings and is called "Android accessibility Suite" com.google.android.marvin.talkback

@@WOTBoxTV Thanks. I think I have fixed the problem by going into settings in Hulu, which is the app I was using when I encountered the problem. Hulu has its own text-to-speech function, I discovered. I disabled that and I no longer have Talk Back.

They are very different beasts in completely different price ranges so comparing them is not easy. Just as a Lamborghini and a VW golf will get you from A to B, a Shield and a KM2 will equally stream 4k Netflix with no problems.

Be sure to report back what you think of it. I've bought several dongles/sticks and boxes over the last year (TiVo, Mecool Kd1, Xiaomi Mi Stick, Firestick Lite, Fire TV Cube, Chromecast with Google TV, Dynalink 4k etc) and I'm really liking this Km2 a lot! Probably even more than the Chromecast.

currently having a frequent freezing issue with my KM2. Not sure if overheating is an issue, but aida64 doesn't give me temperature info. Sometimes after a few minutes the remote light will go red and the device freezes.

Most, if not all, Android TV devicesdon't have a temperature sensor like those found in phones. Aida 64 doesn't take this into account.

For general streaming it will work as well as a Shield (I have 2 shields as well). Where the Shield excels is in gaming and more stable wifi and aln (and yes the Shield's processor is more advanced). That said, you're asking to compare very different devices... the Shield costs three times what the KM2 does.

Any "known brand" like SanDisk, Crucial, Kingston, Samsung should be fine. Recommend TF/Micro SD as opposed to USB thumb drives

@@BOOTZbootz if you mean as internal/device storage I have a 64gb TF/microSD card set as device storage. A friend has a 500GB SSD set as device storage. I can't say if more is possible as I haven't tried it myself. If you mean as removable/external storage, I have used a 3tb HDD with this device. Again, I haven't tried with bigger so don't know where the limit is.

Many thanks. Haven't tried it with Xbox Game Pass, though, as it's running Android TV OS like the Nvidia Shield TV and the Chromecast with Google TV, I'm sure it can be installed. I do wonder though how well it might handle the more graphically demanding games.

Does anyone know how to fix the add device issue? Mine keeps showing the "something went wrong" message, so I can't control the inputs, TV volume etc.

I had this at the beginning, but it cured itself after everything was updated. You'll have to update the system firmware in settings-device preferences-about...then follow the update messages. Also be sure to go into the play store app and make sure the apps are set to update automatically. Hopefully those two steps should solve your issue. Let me know how it goes.

I tried it on 2 TVs, a Xiaomi Mi TV 4S UHD 4K and an 8 year old Samsung HD 1080 UE32ES550 with no luck. I can't say it will fail with all models, but I suspect so... A simple firmware update should easily solve it

Occasionally it takes a few seconds longer before I get the "USB reconnected" message, not sure what causes this... though I don't have it not connecting at all.

@@jamesbartels7270 if the power button is left on, the device should stay on just like the Fire tv devices... Just like them, it may go into sleep mode and can be woken up by hitting the home or back button.

I've been researching TV boxes for weeks now. It's a shame I can't find exactly what I want without paying $200. I've been using a generic box for years but it has very little RAM and almost no storage. Buffering is an issue with it. The 4 main apps I use are Netflix, Prime, Plex & HD Homerun. My house is a SMART Google home. Therefore it makes sense to get one with Chromecast and a certified version of Google Android. There don't seem to be many available. I was hoping to find one with 4GB RAM and either 32 or 64GB storage running a quad core in 64 bit mode. Is there such an animal for $100 or less, because I've not seen it. I may have to just settle for the MeCool KM2 which is more underpowered than I'd hoped.

Yep I hear you. whilst I wouldn't set a Plex SERVER on this box, a plex client will work fine. Haven't used HD Homerun, though Netflix and Prime are fine. Many users mistakenly dismiss boxes with less than 4gb Ram. In the majority of cases those boxes that do have 4gb Ram have DDR3 ram. The KM2 has DDR4 ram. Personally, I'd go for 2gb of DDR4 over 4gb of DDR3 any day. As for storage, the KM2 is ideal for adding extra storage if required. Personally I added a 64gb TF card and formatted as internal storage. Total cost around $80. Unlike many of the vanilla Android boxes out there, this one has full Google and netflix certification, with full chromecast and Google assistant capability... Win/win.

@@WOTBoxTV I've seen cheaper boxes, ex Ematic, that will work to setup a DVR engine for HDHomerun and it works just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if the KM2 can be used that way.

I have the KM7 as well and the answer depends on 2 things. 1) If you have a Netflix subscription (I do), then I'd go for the KM2 2) If you are not bothered about Netflix but use other major streaming platforms, then the KM7 is the one to go for. 2.5 portable hd does not work on usb 2.0 port. Not enough power. Usb 3.0 port works fine. Remote control cannot control tv volume, input, power on off.

@@WOTBoxTV Neither 2.5 spinning or ssd work. Usb flash drive works fine. Just not enough power. Any hd connected to the usb 2.0 needs to have its own power. A 2.5 hd need to be connected to a powered usb hub or a 3.5 hd with its own power brick work fine.

Correct - as with ALL Android TV OS devices (Nvidia SHield TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Dynalink 4K, TiVo stream 4k, etc, etc) they don't have a browser. BUT, that said, you CAN sideload a browser, no prob - I'd always recommend TV Bro browser.

The box is defaulted to HDR mode and there is no display settings to turn it off. Makes the UI and non HDR content simply to bright and overly saturated. Most disappointing to an otherwise excellent product

@@WOTBoxTV I think it's a badly developed firmware. It seems to be defaulted to swith all SDR content to display as HDR. I also have a Xiaomi Mi Box S, it has a setting which allows to switch on or off this feature under display settings.... I can't seem to find this setting on the Mecool Km2. Hopefully, they wise up and fix it, there is really no point marketing the product as 4k and HDR capable if it is problematic on HDR TVs. I'm letting my unit go, possibly pass it to my son who uses a HD TV at the moment. Good dialogue. Thanks.

@@premmoorthy958 Agreed, the Tivo Stream 4K had exactly the same issue and it took them close on 8 months before they fixed the firmware with the addition of HDR/SDR switching plus a couple of other options in there. The Dynalink 4K dongle has been bad from day one in this respect and has not been fixed.... I'm using the KM2 on an FHD TV (doubles as a second monitor for my dual screen PC). Prefer the Shields anyway on the 4K TV. Cheers!
