Old Father Time and the Winged Hermit . Searching I found this article to explain the evolution of The Hermit card from the earliest Italian decks to Chris Anne's Light Seers Tarot. Now I can begin to grasp the history of The Hermits many names, and his Time travelling adventures. tarotwheel.net/history/the%20individual%20trump%20cards/el%20gobbo.html

What a cool website! Thanx Dee! So Wings and Columns on the Hermit card are still mysterious, but both are identifiied as being specific to decks made in Bologna...

@@aryahavinfun5682 As you will have noticed I've become captivated by the history of the early Tarot. They have become my chosen rabbit hole.🤭

Looking over the 1st part of the episode that I had missed: This Bateleur looks very much like a Mountebank running a dice based con game with the kids transfixed by his clever legerdemain... As for the question about Church restrictions on gambling/pagan gods images, etc., it is likely that the Church in the 17th Century was a bit looser in its restrictions concerning imagery and gambling than it had been in earlier times. The bishops didn't stop scolding their congregants for loose morals and popular entertainments, but they weren't as actively persecutory by then. After all, they were swamped with more world shattering concerns, like the changes brought by a couple of centuries of divvying up spoils of the New World, the newly available translations of ancient writings that Europe had lost but the Arab lands had preserved, coping with the widespread effects of the printing press and the Protestant Revolution, the relatively recent invention and application of telescopes for exploration of the Heavens, the Seas, and even the newly rounded Earth, and the demise of armored chivalry with the inventions of gunpowder and firearms making. Way too much on their plate to be overly focused on playing cards by that point... Looking at card#9, an angelic Hermit? Somehow he seems to be a bit more graphically patterned after some version of the Wandering Jew, with his odd hat, his beard, his implied poverty/disability because of his use of crutches, his relatively plain clothing, and yet he also carries a prominently displayed purse. The wings are also odd, as the Hermit isn't usully thought to be a spirit, but perhaps that is the artist's backhanded way to acknowledge that despite all historical hardships and disasters, Jews still exist and travel the earth under some sort of divine protection. The column puzzles me: is it there to remember that the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 70AD by the Romans? Is it a clue that he maintains his allegiance to the old ways despite the loss of his historical homeland? Makes me wonder if Bologna had a noticeable settlement of Jews in it at the time this deck came out... Both the Ace of Swords and the Knight of Swords emphasize rather large, impressively curved scimitars rather than European straight swords, presumably a fashion statement. I don't think the Knights' horses are oddly striped, I think the style of harnesses/livery they wear involves weird looking straps running in odd directions. Given the Knights are wearing street clothes rather than heavy armor plate, it does look odd indeed. Really intriguing deck!

Thank you Arya for this informative, layered response. We all have so much to learn in weaving together history and the tarot - and reading the nuances of creators' 'hidden' messages. I appreciate the time you took to share this 🙏🏻

This Tarocchino (small tarot) deck is very beautiful, and contains many historical images that pass down the centuries to all European decks. I know I asked for a side by side with the 1JJSwiss but now it feels more appropriate to compare the Bologna decks with more Italian decks. These decks, some of which are not strictly tarot (Sola Busca & the Minchiate etc) but contemporaneous with Tarocchini, may contain similar thought provoking images? I'd love the opportunity to compare how the images change over time, if that is possible? This is a great article but the history of the Bologna tarocchini is very convoluted. The author answers interesting questions and quotes contemporary documents that mention the making of decks, buying, selling and commissioning cards, and the burning cards after a Lent Sermon in 1423 by St Bernardino of Siena. www.associazioneletarot.it/page.aspx?id=179&lng=ENG The Hermit and his wings v's Temperance wingless condition. I've really no idea (as of yet) why the Hermit has wings but Temperance is one of Aristotle's 4 Cardinal Virtues, and Aristotle very much predates the rise of Christendom, and the grafting of Angelic wings onto Temperance. www.thecollector.com/aristotle-four-cardinal-virtues/ I look forward to the continuing study and contemplation of these fascinating historical decks.

The idea of comparing the evolution of Italian decks is most appealing. I will endeavour to get that in the lineup asap. Thank you for that suggestion. Thank you also for the link Dee. I will add it in the description of the video. I appreciate your sharing of resources and time invested in these discussions 🙏
