Personally, I don't think any lens in the world is worth $14,000. Lovely portraits but I've seen you take just as nice portraits with way cheaper lenses and I bet unless you pixel peep at 200-400% you would never be able to tell the difference.

Let's face it, Leica's target customer base consists of Middle Eastern potentates, trust-fund babies, investment bankers, A-list celebrities, and high-end professional photogs with aggressive accountants. They don't have to care whether a cheaper lens would do just as well, because to them $14K IS cheap. As more and more of the world's wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people, you're going to see more and more of this type of product that doesn't even pretend to be relevant to anyone except the unimaginably wealthy few.

Matt, greetings and salutations from Okinawa, Japan. Matt, when I finally entered the wonderful world of Leica M I discovered after some time and research that 75mm was my favorite focal length in this mount. I had the APO but being an absolute bokeh fanboy - I quickly fell in love 😍 with the Noct 75 after watching several reviews. Especially from Nick at Australia Leica Academy. With the exception of 135 I sold my APO (50, 75, 90) collection and purchased the Noct 75. Tons of cash but worth every penny. I LOVE THIS lens on both the M3, M11, & the SL2-S. I’m in the que for the new LUX 35 which will complete my kit. Continued happiness and success to you and yours. Be Blessed! Doc Chaps

90 will be higher contrast/ sharper wide open. 80 gives more of a softer 50 f1 glow look wide open it seems. (I looked at that lens in the past but too soft wide open for film for me) still a killer lens on SL!

I have the Leica Noctilux 75mm f/1.25, the progenitor of the 90mm lens design, and I think you need to evaluate this lens the same way you evaluate a 20k watch. Both are amazing lenses in both function and design, Peter Karbe should be proud. It feels good to shoot with it and I absolutely love the results I get. You obviously don't need to spend your car budget on a lens but for those of you who can or do, you will not regret it. Objectively, the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm ($5000 but still a high end Leica) is slightly better in resolution and you can get a much better minimum focus distance. Alternatively, I use the modern Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 and I get awesome results for 1/14th the price and a lot less paranoia during travel. You don't have to buy a 14k lens but if you do the reasons are not performance. Learn from the watch people, it's not about function or results at that point. Please stop judging these class of lenses on that basis alone (and the people that enjoy them).
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Год назад
Thanks Adam! Yes I own and love the Voigtlander 75/1.5 (it replaced my 75 APO for portraits). I was going to mention nice watches in the video! Totally agree, for people that work hard i think it is nice to mark the effort with a nice watch, car, ..or lens. (I use the f1 Noctilux).

“Liked.” Thanks for the truly useful size reference, and the warning about the weight/mass. I might be willing to (unwisely) raid a retirement account, for the $14K, but if using a Leica M camera, I would rather tote a smaller amount of weight, and use a lens that blocks less of the viewfinder. My APO Summicron-M 75mm ASPH is more my cup of tea, for a short telephoto on an M camera, supplemented by my Thambar-M 90mm, for some few special occasions. I am glad that this Summilux-M 90mm lens exists, and hope that Leica sells plenty of them.

Thanks Rex! Yes for me too big for the M system but nice on the SL.
@carlosmcse
@carlosmcse Год назад
Haha. Video just started. Hopefully it’s on the SL! That thing will rip the mount right off your M. For me the flaring is unacceptable. I think the 90f2.8 is good enough especially for M shooters. And of course our friends at Voigtlander have the APO-Skopar. You have the video on that one so people should watch that one too. Excellent results. I think for me as an M shooter anything lower than f2.8 at 90mm it would be too hard to focus.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Год назад
Thanks Carlos, on film 2.8 is fast enough (to be sure to hit focus) I got the Elmarit R. On digital 90/2 pre-ASPH is stunning
@AdamMuise
@AdamMuise Год назад
The Voigtlander 90mm Skopar APO is a crazy good lens. When considering the price I think people just need to shut up and buy it if they have an M and need a 90mm. You would get the 90mm summilix for more than just performance reasons though.

It's worth it. I feel the problem with the M system is that there is no alternative or competitor so if you like it you're stuck... Combined with I guess low production and high quality standards plus I'm sure a mark up for this exclusivity the prices are pretty outrageous... it's difficult to judge in a video review but I feel this lens might provide 99.99% perfection. A 1,000 pound lens might provide 95% perfection and a 100 pound lens might already get you 90% there. But if you use it under the right circumstances (and I am sure a workshop with you helps to find this lenses strength), and you can appreciate the difference in quality then it could be 100% worth it :)
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Год назад
Thanks Thomas, I need to pay you as my PR guy! :) M system is less suited to big fast lenses for me. SL for that. M for street. Agree cheaper older lenses will get you X% there

Thanks and fair point! I use softer lenses for older sitters, vintage 50s. This might be a little too sharp where in focus .. it could work on SL via close focus adapter to get even less in focus so skin re sees soft and eyes sharp.

I am an avid Leica shooter but never got into the hype of this „über lenses“. If it’s worth it’s up to you to decide but just gear doesn’t take good photos. Otherwise there’s millions of good other options for portrait shooting especially when you shoot with an SL. I’d rather have the 90mm APO SL or also the 135mm APO Telit M is a totally underrated lens you get used for a fifth of the price.

I have a Leica M 90mm f2.5….I use it adapted on my Leica SL 601, it has to be the most under rated Leica lens, don’t know why, images are super sharp and colors are spectacular. I can’t believe how compact it is, I always have the 90 with me because it’s just to easy to carry. Get one, review it… I actually use to shoot soccer matches, grand children, and you can read the serial numbers on the ball in the field, it’s sharp.

Leica is like expensive luxury hand bags or watches, those who wear them see their value, and there's nothing wrong with doing so. I have friends who shoot exclusive Leica, I personally don't think any of them are "worth it" at all. I love looking at Flickr as you can browse though the photos that are grouped by gear, and although gears have their own characteristics, but most of the time, the "looks" of the photos are not governed by the gear, but the photographer who chooses the gears. Generally speaking, it seems to me the photographers who chooses Leica and Fujifilm lean towards the "artistic" look, with a lot of shadows, black and whites, and are much more concerned with their "artistic" style and compositions. I guess if the photographer chooses gear that looks aesthetically pleasing, they will also shoot photos that are "artistic" as well, it's a chicken and egg phenomena. On the other hand, photos taken by Sony, Canon and Nikon are usually not "artistic", but have a lot of precision and action, and that's because that's what those camera delivers - no nonsense precision that get the job done, for themselves as well as their clients, and can't afford any mistakes that will cost them their entire project. That being said, that's just a general observation and I'm pretty sure all cameras and lenses today can do either with great proficiency.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Год назад
Thanks Alan, a very interesting observation.. I'm 100% whatever creates the most artistic photo (probably why I struggled with Nikon and eventually moved). Yes for perfect everything photos Hasselblad probably wins with their latest release but not for sport. :)

While lenses like this are fun to use and talk about but they truly aren’t worth buying as most if not all persons will never know the difference or even ask if you used lens x or lens y. I’ve shot portraits using a Hasselblad 500 C with the 80mm and a Mamiya RB67 using the 90mm lens and my Nikon F3 with a 85mm lens and surprisingly I’ve never had a person know or notice the difference. By all means get the best lenses you can but there are no amount of bokeh balls that would ever make me buy a $14,000 lens.

The question is, is there a better 90mm f1.5 lens on the market? and do you have the money for this lens. For me, this lens is to expensive, course I use 90mm not very much. But if you are looking for one of the best 90mm lens, why not. Yes, you’re paying for the name Leica, but witch lens is on the same level?

Sadly Leica have lost the plot and now are a company for very rich people who think that owning a Leica camera with a ridiculously expensive lens will make them a good photographer. People buy Noctilux 50mm F.95 lenses and then after using them wide open, realise that the look becomes boring after a while and that carrying the big lump around is a pain. The number of these lenses in mint condition for sale is a testament to the truth of this. I absolutely accept that to make a technically good picture, you do need a decent camera/lens BUT this absolutely does not need that you have to spend this sort of money. The best picture that I have ever taken was with a Leica M2 (£235) with a beat up 50mm F3.5 Elmar (£65) plus I regularly use a 90mm F4 LTM Elmar (£80) that makes fantastic pictures that are pretty indistinguishable from a 90mm APO Summicron. Nothing wrong with buying or wanting good gear but we all have to be true to ourselves and accept that 95% of lenses are more than good enough and 99% of photographers will never reach the full potential of their gear. PS: good to see you starting The Leica Club - has to be better than the awful and elitist LUF Forum!
