What are the repercussions if you decide to sidestep a narcissist? The reality is, a narcissist doesn't take too kindly to being overlooked. There are repercussions when you choose to disregard a narcissist, and we're going to explore them in this discussion. So, without further ado, let's delve right into it.
The discussion is primarily centered around the scenario where you are still involved in a relationship with a narcissist. This perspective is often derived from intimate relationships, as it's easier to observe their strategies directly. However, this viewpoint can also be applicable to other settings. We're considering situations where the narcissist isn't done with you yet, and you're moving towards the devaluation phase. There's been a lot of give and take, and you're growing weary. Perhaps the narcissist has exhibited their true colors in a particularly unpleasant way, and you're starting to question the viability of the relationship. That's the sort of situation we're examining here. This can also apply when you're not cohabitating with the narcissist, yet the same principles apply.
You've reached a point of saturation, and you've decided to ignore the narcissist. This doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to completely block them out of your life. It simply means you need a respite, time for reflection, and you've decided to disregard this individual for a while to focus on self-care. Ideally, you'll start exploring resources on narcissistic abuse awareness to gain a better understanding of what you're facing.
To a narcissist, the concept of someone else taking control is utterly unacceptable. Their entire fabricated reality and their narcissistic personality disorder are structured to ensure they are always in the driver's seat. They can never allow another person to steer the course of their life or their source of emotional fuel. For them, control is as essential as oxygen. Therefore, when you suddenly ignore a narcissist's messages or stop communicating with them as you once did for weeks, months, or even years, it comes as a jarring shock. This is not a shock they appreciate. They view it with disdain because they can't understand your reasons for cutting off contact, and they see it as you seizing control, which is the complete opposite of what their narcissism is about. Therefore, they feel an urgent need to reclaim that control.
