Hi Doc! great to see you back in full swing on your channel. Some bad news and some good news! Bad News first....The 8.1.1 update (for the 2019 Shields) will be launched very soon. With the update Nvidia are going to apply and adhere to Google certification rules whereby 3rd party launchers can't be set as default. Then the good news!...those of us already running the 8.1.1 hotfixes have found ways round the new "restrictions" (2 ways actually)! Get in touch if you'd like to know more and share with your Shield users. Again, good to see you back!

I tested another process with FTVlaucherX and using the ADB command pm grant de.codefaktor.ftvlaunchx android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS Wonder if that will work when the changes come? @@TechDoctorUK Yes, ADB is still feasible, though not the simplest of methods and I believe updates to the launcher app might break it? (might be wrong on that). I'll email ya!
Any updates? I used the adb method but when waking up my shield from sleep no remotes work not even the nvidia app with the dpad, forcing me to restart the shield again and put in the adb command for the widgets every time shield wakes up

Nice video. Honestly, I would have liked a launcher that copies the stock launcher but add new features to it like sizing, folders etc. The reason is that I really do like the watching suggestions the stock launchers provide. Even on Amazon devices, despite the terrible UI on Amazon FireTV devices, I still prefer those suggestive video previews. Sometimes I just want to relax and watching something interesting but I might not know what is out. If only Reelgood and Justwatch made replacement launchers for both Nvidia and Amazon, I would likely try out that.

Can you be a little clearer as to which button/key you are pressing and what does it do? I only manage to hear sometimes you say home button and maybe sometimes you say end button.
Awesome! I ordered one of these recently, I think this app is one of the first ones I'm going to get. Reminds me of how my Apple TV is laid out so I might mimic it to make the transition more familiar. I'm going to try avoiding rooting, but can see that here's a reason you might want to (widgets, etc). Yes I want to see more Nvidia shield content, going to watch your other videos now, thanks!

Ok so went back to your original tutorial, got google drive going, installed puffin tv and downloaded ATV Launcher, however I can't remap the home button, there are no defaults set so I'm wondering if the app has changed possible?
Hi, great video, BUT when I get to 4.10, and hit the home button, it just turns the launcher back to the original Android one, the launcher choice option does not appear for me to change over to ATV Launcher. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way there were no defaults in "clear defaults" to remove, if that helps.

I love the way the ATV launcher looks the only problem I had when following your instructions was after I clear defaults on android tv home when I then press the home button the choice to pick a launcher doesn’t come up it just shows the apps and games screen as normal ?
I don’t know if they have changed it, but I get as far as android to home, clear defaults but it comes back with some defaults set and when I start itgecshield up it goes back to the advert filled home page

Hey Lawanda, yes you can use the ATV launcher on the 4K firestick. I wrote all the steps here : www.techdoctoruk.com/tutorials/use-custom-launcher-on-2nd-gen-fire-tv-cube/ You only need the first ADB command for the 4K firestick. The other 2 commands are only needed for the 2nd gen fire cube.
Whad up... Good vid working gread but one thing... ✔ the Application Wallpaper and the background is still black on my end,,, is there something maybe i have changed in my setting that may have cause that to happen where I just don't have any wallpapers in my device at this time... And if i dont where can i get them...

Link video involving ADB isn't necessary. Just download button and make a new, add a home button {don't use the existing home button in remapper) and set its action to the app you want which in this case is the ATV launcher. I'm not sure how this work around will affect things like widgets but it works.
I set up wallpaper. Great and all. I decided to get rid of the launcher and go back to default launcher. Whenever I restart the Shield, the wallpaper I had for the ATV launcher pops up and goes straight to home screen. I no longer have ATV launcher, but why do I still see the wallpaper at startup and how to get rid of it???
Great video. Tech Doctor I'm having a problem with the ATV Launcher. I installed B TV and tried to move it to the top and the whole app just FROZE and the app I was trying to move remained at the bottom of the screen. Can you tell me what I may be doing wrong. I'm using the Jetstream Android box. Again, nice video.
i have a little problem with this laucher when i use mouse toggle and wanna disable the arrow with one time home button it does,nt disable it but goes out of an application totally how can i fix this? also 2 times home button doesnt show my recent apps anymore how can i restore this or otherwise add a command trough button mapper?? thanks in advance
So you uninstalled the ATV launcher. Does this mean that launcher and all your personalized settings are gone. You can't have multiple ones in storage saved?
Hey Mike, you can install as many launchers simultaneously as you like and they will all store their own settings. However if you do uninstall any of them then you will lose the customisations for that particular launcher
Setting default launcher will not work on update 8.1.1. The pop up to choose what launcher as always wont pop up. As long as i have launchX turned on the home button will always take me to ATV launcher. But then you cannot use the double home button click to see all background running apps to close at will. Not a huge inconvenience but do you know a way in ATV launcher to access seeing all the background apps running? Its kinda annoying to have to go back to the stock launcher by turning off launcherX just to turn off apps. Even if you force stop apps they still run in the background until you do this. There is also another option by holding down the home button, i believe to record the screen, that won’t work either in ATV launcher. And those two things can’t be mapped in button launcher as far as i know?
Ok I figured out a work around. In button mapper you can re-map a key to open recents. I just put that as double click on the Netflix button. AWESOME!! That works just fine in ATV launcher. Thanks man. The setup is now amazing after completing what you said in your latest upload. Totally transformed my dash into something so damn cool compared to stock launcher.
I followed your launcher installation to a t but I can’t get the home screen to change to the atv launcher unless I change it manually! I don’t see anywhere to select home app! Any tips? Thx
Unfortunately it will not set to the default and the original launcher is being stubborn. I clear the default and press the home key, but it doesn't ask me what to do. I can open the new ATV launcher but pressing home goes back
I must be doing something wrong, when I clear the defaults and then press the home button, it goes straight back to the Nvidia home and does not give me the option to use the ATV Launcher as shown in your video??

I'm on Shield Experience 8.1.1 and this didn't work. Cleared defaults and does not prompt for a launcher. I can open ATV launcher, but pushing home button always goes back to the Android TV Home launcher. Maybe they are blocking this now. Rebooted and no change.

I got it from filelinked code: 67664537. If this helps anyone out. One more question. I followed your steps to make this my default launcher but when I click the home button once, i don't get that prompt you get. It just takes me to the original launcher. A bit more work than the android boxes init lol If I can't make this my default launcher, I'll just toggle back and forth because this launcher is great. I also subbed and liked 👍

Just looked further in to this. Can you ADB on to your Shield? if so, once you have installed a custom launcher, then issue this command in adb shell: pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.tvlauncher that will disable the default launcher and allow you to use the custom one. Let me know !

Have you ever used ADB on your device? Follow the steps here www.techdoctoruk.com/tutorials/use-custom-launcher-on-2nd-gen-fire-tv-cube/ to install Remote ADB Shell direct on the shield (you will have to enable ADB first via the developer tools). Install ATV launcher , then make an ADB connection to your shield and issue this command: pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.tvlauncher that will disable the default launcher and allow you to use the custom one. Let me know !
Hi how are you hope all is well with you and your family, when I Clear defaults I click the home button it does not show me the prompt that yours show you the only way I got the launcher to work I have to open it and then just follow you after that to set it up but it did not give me the prompt where I can set it as always any idea as to why if I double click the home button and press clear it goes back to the original Android launcher thanks 😊

it would appear that my downloader wont go to any websites. States that android tv have asked then to disable access to the browser feature. very parculiar indeedly
Noticed that the doc is running an older version of android tv home app which apparently is not available to the bourgeoisie. There is an app on the play store called TV Home, which gives you a choice of launchers when you run it, but does not change the behavior of the Home key. Thanks for all the confusion, Doc.
Download Launcher Manager from Troypoint's Rapid App Installer. Then you can enable and disable the launcher at will. Tbh, you should have downloaded the Launcher Manager first. It is the safe way to manage most launchers!
TechDoctorUK thank you for answering, I was able to install the atv launcher, with the other tutorial, but neither the wolf launcher 2gen Oe the TiVo launcher will install through downloader, does this mean I have to uninstall the atv launcher before installing the wolf launcher? if I can make a suggestion, maybe do a video on widgets?
