Comb is King. I had several hives swarm. I caught the swarms and they are now making me comb since the swarm will kill those hives honey production. I desperately need the comb anyway. Thanks for video like always. See you on Saturday at 6:30

I run a lot of 8 frame supers. Like you, I wax my plastic foundation. They draw comb nicely with just a little bridging. I have a Dakota Gunness chain uncapper & it works great with 8 or 9. I ran all queen excluders this year on singles & 2 story hives & it was the best ever with no brood in honey. Really enjoyed your video. Interesting about splitting before the flow to curve swarming. Looks like they packed on the honey. 👍

K&L, great video as always. I run 9 in my 10 frame supers and feel thats best for me and run 8 in a few 8 frame boxes that I plan on doing away with in the next year.

I prefer running 9's for honey supers for sure! Thanks for reminding me why I don't run 8's.

I got a bunch of new foundations for my honey supers that I need to have drawn out to prepare for next year.. I started last summer and I still got a lot of new equipment is like to have ready for next year nectar flow in west central Georgia

8 frames are also heavy so you need to bee 🐝 gentle with them or you can snap the end of the top bar off or pull it apart

Would be tough to preserve comb depth with an auto uncapped. If using a capping scratcher, hot knife, electric carving knife, etc, then preserving comb depth is possible and helps to prevent cross-combing. I might try 6-in-10 next season. 😬😅 My $0.02

morning to you,, question i have single broad box with 3 supers i need to add 1 more super,, where would you put the new box directly over over broad chamber or at the top of the whole hive as top box,, thanks for all the knowledge that you provide,,,

I put my drone frames in the honey supers,mainly because I am running short on frames. I wonder if the bigger cells mean more honey per frame 🤔
@apveening
@apveening Год назад
Not really, less cells per frame.
@Bri_bees

@@apveening Ya but less wax too , i pan on weighing them to see. Probably no difference or very little.

Hey Kamon, why are you using a screen board and stacking the colonies instead of just setting one on a new bottom board?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds Год назад
I did that originally due to them being a small split in April with cool weather on the way. Now they need their own stand but I am behind on my work!

Cheers from Australia! Great video as usual guys! thank you! Question: here winter has been pretty mild so far ( with low 20°C during the day and dropping to 6°C in the night ) and I've waves of nectar coming from April until end of September. My broods are exploding ( with brood and pollen) and I'm at the second harvest ( great problem to have in winter hey) and I'm giving room in the brood box( 1 frame taken from the edge and moved above the excluser) as it tents to get clogged...am I doing right?
@Jimflawless927
@Jimflawless927 Год назад
Hey how is it going. Thanks for all the great post of your experiences. I have a question I been reading about cell sizes and find so many confusing sizes. What is your assessment of the proper size cell for the brood of the opening and the depth. Thanks in advance.
@bullwinkled790
@bullwinkled790 Год назад
so any syrup that may have been stored in the brood box and now is moved through the excluder becomes honey. Must be that the amount of syrup becomes insignificant and does not effect the honey quality. Is that how you see it?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds Год назад
There isn't much in the hive to begin with. We typically don't feed them even a month before the main flow due to the light pre flows. They burn thru it all of it in my experience. There would be a lot more chances of that with a double deep I would think. The heavy food frames go to the splits

Calculation error: If you take one frame out of 1,000 boxes each you have 1,000 frames, not 100 (but you will have enough frames for 111 boxes of nine frames and one frame to spare).

I use 8 frames but uncap by hand. However, I have been getting a significant number of frames in my honey supers that have larger cells at the bottom in a half circle shape approx 6” diameter. The bees will not store honey in those cells! I assume they are drone cells. I do use an excluder but I believe they are usually the frames in the center and/or closest to the brood below. Is this normal or perhaps from using only 8 frames?
@russellkoopman3004
@russellkoopman3004 Год назад
I wonder if you would under super if they would do better?? They maybe leaving that area open for the queen to lay eggs into but once it is a box above they would fill that center area? I always under super and have never seen that.

Have you ever tried 5 frames as honey production hives?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds Год назад
No I have not. It would be hard to keep them small enough if they were great bees and if you let them go full bore they would be 10-12 boxes high.

You could split the boxes and wait a few days to see which box has the queen. Try using your phone camera to take pictures so you can blow them up and spot eggs or larvae. Just a thought. I really miss my young eyes, I could see everything - not now so much. LOL

I have a single brood that I added a (honey) deep with excluder above it and move a couple frames of brood up to get them going up the excluder and give them some room in the bottom and place to put honey when the brood hatched but they wont pull out the frames in the deep boxes and started adding honey in brood box. I added a super above the honey deep box and there pulling that out ?????
