Springtime is a critical to hives. Many hives that make it thru winter die from starvation in March and April. Get into your hives and give them a little food to get them thru until the nest is turned over and they build up a spring field force.

Hello Tony, I've never used anything stronger than OA. I guess I'll have to go will Formic acid when the Tropilaelaps arrives.

Formic Pro really does the job but it's temperature sensitive. Most likely this spring I'll do a few rounds of OA to knock the mites back. I did not do any mid winter treatment thus the reason for a spring treatment.

Hello Tony, I treated with Apivar in the fall and plan to test mite count in two weeks. I have treated with OA in the past years, but recent info seems to indicate that its not as effective as we hoped. I have bees in West Pike county, Ohio close to you. Looks like we are in for a cold stretch before warmer temps next week.

I use Apivar in our NUCs and as I stated in the video, love Formic Pro. We usually use OA only around Christmas, two treatments and with this, in the spring, alcohol washes show zero mites but... this past winter we didn't get OA treatments done. OA during any brooding is getting a minor amount of mites is all. Some great info finally coming out from real studies. At this point, I will wait for the nests to build up a few weeks before any alcohol washes to see where we are at. I'll probably use a single strip Formic Pro treatment early April. This should get them in good shape until August. Thanks for watching.

Most of my bees are dark. I use a lot of Carniolan genetics and prefer them. We do sell a few NUCs in May and June and some Queens later in the year.

What strain of bees do you have or recommend? Temps hit 14 degrees this morning, I expect it might have been hard on the brood??

I recommend Carniolan based bees overall. Local bred is best. I find these over winter well, smaller clusters than the typical Italian based production stock. These Carnis use less food over winter and build up well in the spring in time for our main flow. Overall more calm too. Bees of all kinds were brooding up real good and this last cold blast might cause a lot of brood loss or even hive loss if the bees refused to abandon the brood and cluster back up. Only time will tell.
