The Grand Mosque was constructed between1994 and 2007.[2] The building complex measuresapproximately 290 by 420 m (950 by 1,380 ft),covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30acres), excluding exterior landscaping and vehicleparking. The main axis of the building is rotatedabout 12° south of true west, aligning it in thedirection of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.The project was launched by the late presidentof the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Zayedbin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish astructure that would unite the cultural diversity ofthe Islamic world with the historical and modernvalues of architecture and art.[3] In 2004, SheikhZayed died and was buried in the courtyard of themosque.
