That's right. It's not a rex begonia, it is rhizomatous. It's been around for decades and is pretty hardy - it grows well in normal household conditions and endures all sorts of neglect. Mine is alive and kicking for over 20 years now.
Seconded on the iridescence! Some of mine are really showing up super blue in photos now 😍 handy to know what they’re actually called, I’ll make a note to label mine for future reference 😁
You have a nice assortment of black plants! Your Begonia Arabian sunset is my favorite. I have a few dark plants that are standing out to me too, like the Columnea gloriosa, the Tradescantia baby bunny bellies and tradescantia navicularis.😊
I am soooo impressed with your polly! I've killed so many over the years and i haven't been able to keep a single alocasia alive that long. I'm obsessed though so i keep trying
A few months ago I stumbled on a Alocasia chienlii antoro velvet, think you'll like that one. The leaves are really dark green and purple on the back 😁
Black plants are what got me addicted to plants in the first place so they will always be my no 1!🖤 My top favorites are Begonia darthvaderiana hybrids (the species on its own is beautiful but a pain in the ass to grow) - Syngonium rayii (not wendlandii, they are quite different if you put them side by side) - Syngonium erythrophyllum - Solanum uleanum - Philo gigas - Ludisia discolor 'nigrescens' and my B. black forrest!
I put my ZZ Raven outside in a shaded west light area over the growing season and it gave me 5 new stems over the 2.5 months it was outside. I was shocked how fast it grew with more light 😅
I love the goth aesthetic and I love all of these plants! I only have a Polly but a ZZ Raven has been on my wish list for a while. And those cane begonias are so striking, I might just get a bunch of them. I didn’t like the look of cane begonias before but all these dark ones are calling me 😄
Yea the first one. I kill it. But got me a second one. Is growing so good love love it. And yea they love water. Just don't over do it. I'm trailing it
Hi Emma, Congratulations on becoming a Mrs, you looked beautiful x, and black is beautiful too, on your Alocasia, i am pretty sure its not a polly, the Amazonica is the original form and grows mahusive lol, the polly is the jewel hybrid of the amazonica, and the banbino is the mini form, i have an amazonica and a polly and they grow very differently, the polly grows much slower and stays small ish, and the amazonica sizes up much faster, and more forgiving lol, on a sidenote my oxalis is the blackest plant i have, its a gothic beauty, but hates uk winters, its trying to go dormant, i love watching your videos, how are you going with Kaylee Allens plant crack lol, any results yet, im scared to stop giving it to my girls, they might linch me, Little Shop of Horrors style lol x
