Do they really. I've been learning mandarin for a month and can speak the very basic you know. Greet, introduce myself, ask for most drinks, foods, and greetings so far and a native has never ever made fun of me or mock me. In fact they always have a huge smile on their face when they see a Hispanic American wanting to learn their native tongue. They never even correct me no matter how shit I say it. I always do ask tho if I said everything right and ask for help if they could barely understand. You do get made fun of tho if you're parents are from any Asian country and can't speak the language fluently

You can say "sorry i don't understand Korean" after your question. It's just so people who don't know English understand your question, I'm sure they'll do their best to show you the way through a map or with some English words they know. It's kinda to show respect to them since you're in Korea and not following the "everyone should speak English to suit my needs" kind of thinking. I'm sure they'll be impressed if you just said hello or excuse me in Korean before speaking English.

I know for sure that if someone makes an effort to speak to me in my native language, I would be so impressed even if it's a small word that I hear 50 times a day.. But again, I can't speak for every Korean let alone Asian people in general .. My opinion comes solely from what I have heard and experienced from my K friends or from other experiments I've watched like this one.. but I do like to believe that Korean people are overall kind and accepting !
