Black Friday goes way back to when they wrote down sales in black ink. My guess is the day after thanksgiving was a day many did Christmas shopping so they had more sales, therefore Black Friday was a day of marking down sales more.

My mom and dad used but did not trust computers, so they kept a ledger of all our stores transactions from 1969 through 2020 when they retired. As a side note the IRS audited us once in 2010 and the first kid they sent in didn't even know what to do with the books! LOL!
