Once again Tzain gets pushed to the sidelines. That fact that he never intervenes annoys the hell out of me. Your sister and girlfriend are bickering like enemies over Orisha's fate and you have nothing to say.
I, like you, am probably not the target audience for this book. That said I was super excited to read it because I loved Children of Blood and Bone and as a fantasy lover, I've been very excited to delve into fantasy worlds that are not the typical western European based. And this world was so rich and interesting that I was able to look past/excuse some of the more problematic areas of the first book. I also ended up hate reading Children of Virtue and Vengeance. I agree with all that you said. Everything got tossed out for drama. Whole character arcs were ruined and destroyed. Every character annoyed me at some point and I don't know if I can forgive the straight up character assassination that happened to one in particular. I am going to read the third book to see if any redemption for the writing happens? Otherwise if it's just as bad or worse (oh I hope not) than the 2nd book, I'm just gonna pretend the first book is stand alone lol.
The first book was so much better than the second. I'm so disappointed 😭 You're totally right about the characters being super horrible. It couldn't have been on purpose! It was a mess.
I truly and whole heartedly hated both Amari and Inan by the end of this book. I think that all of the characters in this book were really dumb, but that is because they are all kids without leaders. They are trying to lead each other. A lot of the characters did digress back into their old ways. However, that made them all more human to me. People don't usually just learn their lesson after one time. People fall and make the same mistakes over and over again. Sometimes people never learn their lesson. I think the drama for sure was overdone in some parts, but I can't wait for the 3rd book to see how it ends.
that would take away so much from the book though. think about his growth and his understanding towards the end. He finally came to a conclusion that made sense for all. why would you want to take that away from the character?
You feelings pretty much mirror mine. I enjoyed CoBaB well enough and was curious to continue on. This book, however, has killed any desire I had to finish the series. I would absolutely love to see a spoiler review 👀 if only to know if we disliked/hated the same things. I listened to the audiobook and it made the melodrama that much more apparent.
Spectacular I am so glad I’m not the only one! A lot of the early response I’m seeing so far is super positive (and I am glad those people can enjoy it more than me), but the ridiculous melodrama was just nuts! I did I combination of listening to the audiobook and reading the ebook. I really enjoyed the performance of the reader, but the story she was forced to read....... lol
Spoiler alert 2 It's a really depressing thought to have this series take this turn. The concept and ideas that is the base of the plot is as good as Harry Potter's, i dare say. But the writing just throws it all out. I know it's unfair to compare the two series but I'll still proceed to do it just cuz i can. Jk didn't rush things in the books whereas at several points throughout the plot of the legacy of orisha you get a feeling as if the author is just as desperate to end the book as some of the readers, including myself, are. And you just don't get to feel the story because of the pace. Characters are just dying left and right for no particular reason which makes it hard to emotionally feel anything because you've barely bonded with them for like 30 pages and boom that's it. An arrow through the heart or sword in their gut and their dead. The love seems extremely rushed and non convincing too because every character is just endorsing the duty before self bullshit to even care about people they "love" With the mythological backdrop and magical plot points combined with political themes, the book looks like a great read, which is the reason why it seems to sell out so fast but the disappointed hits you right in the face cuz the author doesn't do justice to the fantastic base.
Sorry I'm just now seeing more of this comment. The RU-vid comments section is so janky for me lately! And I definitely agree. It seems like everything super rushed to the point where people will go on what is supposed to be a 3 day journey and the book shows none of that and kind of implies no conversations happened during the hike... So many frustrating things!
oh my god same!!! the book completely ruined my reading plans because it was so bad. I had to force myself to finish this book and by the end i hated every single character and i did not care for any of them. Every decision they made pissed me off, also the world building sucks. please make a spoiler review
Thank you so much! I am glad I am not alone! Literally every. single. character. lol. There seems to be some demand for that spoiler review. I should work that really soon!
Michael Knipp yeah I’m definitely looking forward to that video. I think rereading the song of ice and fire series before this also didn’t help because it just made the worst things about CVV so glaring. the world building in CVV is basically nonexistent for a fantasy/adventure book and It really frustrated me.
Man, you have patience to have finished this book while hating every character . I would have thrown the book or burnt it lol. Nevertheless I feel you, I have watched tv series that in which I hated the main characters because of their stupidity, in some cases I ended up rooting for the main villains out of spite for the main characters :)
Hahaha, the main villians in this are still super wicked so I couldn't quite go that far, but daaang I hated the characters so much. I literally would have thrown the book if it wasn't a library ebook copy. It was truly horrible.
Haha, what perfect/imperfect timing. On another note, I finished Inheritance tonight. I told your boy Murtagh you are still in love with him. He said he knew.
I haven't read the first one after someone told me it ended on a cliff hanger. It always feels cheap to me. Hearing you talk about the themes got me interested. As you know I'm a huge fan of Faulkner. I like to hear about the struggle of humanity and how the past can haunt one's present. Not sure I care too much about the fantasy side. Do you think I'd enjoy this series or should I just skip it?
Based on the conversations I've heard from you guys, I think that any of the interesting themes would be buried too deep under a lot of elements you would really dislike, especially given the nature of the sequel. Mild Spoilers that everyone still talks about below: There is a serious amount of time and weight given to some really poorly fleshed out YA romance tropes -- Instant Love, Love Triangle, etc. The elements of these romances pretty much dictate the majority of the reasons I so strongly disliked the second book.
I saw the second book at Walmart and was about to buy it until I realized it was the second one, like it sounded super good so I was excited to get the first book once I had money to spend and oof I might not read it now😬
Yeah... It is so frustratingly stupid how far south it goes over the course of this second book. My opinion is definitely not the majority opinion I don't think, but its not as rare as I initially thought.
Yes!!! I’m a little more than halfway into this book and I’m mad. I loved the first book so much but the sequel boils my blood. I’m not even sure I’m going to finish the book at this point.
I didn't like the first book but I was interested in seeing how others feel about the sequel because of how hyped the first book was and how much most people seemed to love it. But you are the first person I have seen talk about it at all and it's been out for almost three weeks at this point. I'm a little surprised about it. I will say that how you felt about the magic sytem and characters (constantly changing to meet the plot's needs and create drama/making the most stupid decisions possible) is how I felt about the characters in book one already.
Yeah... if you specifically search for them you can find a small number of reviews talking about the sequel, but it doesn't seem to be as widespread as I expected. .. I gave the first book a bit of a pass on a few of the things I didn't like as much because I thought that the major themes were valuable, but the sequel sort of throws that kind of discussion out the window. I have read a lot of Goodreads reviews for the book and watched the other video reviews I've found and people still seem to really love it... I feel kind of crazy being the only person with a video up who didn't care for it rn.
Finally getting a chance to catch up on your videos! Lol old man wizards. I do also like European style fantasy, but it's super cool to see all the different types of fantasy coming out! Haha oh no, Children of Virtue and Vengeance sounds like a little bit of a mess. I still have it and will read it, but this makes me nervous for sure. Umm no, magic systems need to have some rules! Also oh no, yikes about the characters. That's infuriating that everyone makes stupid decisions! Haha I'll have to read it and chat with you about spoilery things.
I enjoyed Children of Blood and Bone enough to start Children of Virtue and Vengeance but I DNF'd it due to the points you stated. Too bad since the part I enjoyed the most was the world and it's magic.
I was really afraid when I posted this originally because it was the only negative take on it at the time. I'm glad I wasn't alone though. I still don't understand why the choice was made to make the characters change the way they did....
I've only read half the second book as of yet and maybe what I'm about to say will offend some and there are a bunch of spoilers too. First off Inan needs to man the fuck up! He always goes around saying "now I'm the king, i have more power to change orisha and fulfill the promises i made to zelie." Where the heck is your king status when you make the most vital commands and decisions? He says "we shouldn't do it" with all conviction and ojore and nehanda say "nope, let's do it" and he doesn't even PROTEST?! like sort out your priorities and make up your mind! Where is the use of you being the king when you don't have any more say in the military strategies than you had as a prince? Zelie is the only character i sort of sympathize with cuz she's doing the "i work with my heart and not my brain" thing and for a moment i feel like if people just went with her plan of dropping the war and leave the country, the maji will lead happier lives, less lives will be lost, the monarchy can continue in peace with whatever the fuck they want to do with their kingdom. It's cowardly, i understand but as a leader you sometimes have to think about the safety of your people before going all out for blood putting lives in danger. But NO! WE HAVE AMARI TO MESS IT UP ALL THE TIME! Ever since the "I'll be the next queen of orisha" idea has been planted in her brain she's taking nothing but brash decisions. "Oh Inan has a good heart" amari, darling WHAT THE FUCK IS THE USE OF A GOOD HEART IF HE IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO EXERT IT?!?!?!?? and to top it all, Tzain is just there. He is just THERE. like who even is Tzain?? Doens't the guy have any say in this? I wouldn't mind if they ended up all dead by the end of the third book. Heck idek if i would want to read the third book after this.
I pretty much agree with all of this... but even Zelie was making me insane with the fact that she kept letting Inan get to her... If they had been in a real developed relationship at least that could have made SOME sense, but instead they had this weird insta love and he like hooked her for life? Kill that turd king when you see him and stop hesitating! lol Inan is a joke. He is the most flip floppy character I've ever read about. I may be the only person in the world who thought this, but I kind of assumed he had died at the end of book 1 (Since if I remember right, the good guys were around the island long enough at the end of that book to have determined his life status...) but his constant presence and influence just straight up sucks and I don't know anyone who likes him or thinks hes even fun to hate. He just sucks period. What in the world was with the Amari nuking the town thing at the end of that book. It was so far out of left field for her character and the story and everything.... If I hadn't been reading it digitally, I would have probably thrown the book and just never picked it back up lol.... I have a few ideas that I might put in a spoiler rant video sometime about how they *might* be able to at least make the story interesting again, but I don't think they'd ever happen lol
@@QuestLegacy literally the most random characters to put together. It was so poorly planned and rushed. I’m not sure how I felt about Roën being introduced near the end of the first book either.
I have heard so much about this book (and series) but haven't got around to reading them yet. Interesting alternative thoughts from this video - I may push it further down my TBR list.
I recognize the books but didn't really know anything about them. Characters that are hard to like are one thing, characters that are moronic are another!
Raymond Raymond yes. It is a difficult thing to talk about some things in a book without just retelling the book. Since the book is still so fresh I wasn’t sure how many people would want to watch a video with spoilers so soon to the publish date. It sounds like there is some interest in a spoiler discussion so I might make that happen sooner than later.
I knew something wasn’t wrong with me and this book was TRASH omg who told her to release this?? I’m being harsh i know, but some of the things that happen are just so- obviously bad. Like it was *meant* to be bad. I’m so mad about this lmao. Like, inan, amari, tzain, roen. Zelie everybody was annoying!
Michael Knipp irk? And it kind of messed up the moments for me that should have been good. Like seeing mama agba again. Also what was that thing where amari suddenly murders a whole ass village? Then zelie revives literally everybody like she’s the messiah or something. Then we have these maji with god like abilies storming the castle but then they get knocked out because of some smoke? I just feel like so much happened but at the same time nothing happened 🤧
I felt like children of blood and bone was very generic and the author wrote a 5th grade level book than went over those words with the synonyms tool and selecting the biggest words to seem smart even though in context it probably wasn't the best choice of words. Also why is the default injury chest pain?
However take my assessment with a grain of salt I did not physically read this book. My son had this book assigned for summer reading and I had him read it to me so I could help him with the vocabulary. Hence why I focused on their use of vocabulary and diction with more detail than most readers.
Omg I love the hatred you have for this book...is that awful? I laughed out loud several times during this rant. I was thinking that you hated it so much that I was almost intrigued to read it. And then you said " Even if you plan to read it to see how bad it is...don't." Lol so now I'm not going to. I would definitely love to hear a spoiler version of this...since I'm never gonna read it
Emily Rose I truly did dislike it that much. I was hoping that people would be able to at least laugh at my frustrations with it haha. My wife who has been hearing me complain about it the whole time I was reading thought the final video version was actually really tame! Lol
Possible Spoilers? Was one of the tropes you mention the insta-love stuff? Because a lot of people didn't like that in the first book, but they were my favorite parts! Inan's POV chapters in the first book were terrible except for the way too instant insta-love stuff. So if there is more of that, then I'm down for it. I recently got the second book, but need to reread the first to remember stuff before I get to the second.
Potential Spoilers Below: One of the tropes I was referring to was the insta-love. In the first book I could go either way on it. It was waaay too fast, but there was a bit of explanation for it since they were inside of each other's minds and could see their memories and whatnot. Inan's flip flopping incessantly from the first book continues into this book. The way that the insta-love plays into the story continually has made me turn sour on the whole thing and made me retroactively dislike it more. There is a new set of insta-love this time around also lol I hope you like it more than I was able to, but once you finish I'd love to be able to chat more about it!
@@QuestLegacy Inan flip flopping made me skim read his chapters and roll my eyes. I'm weird with insta-love tropes. If it's a bit over the top, I find it funny and enjoy it. And honestly, Amari was the only enjoyable character in the first book and I'm kind of scared because I don't want to end up hating her. But I shall still read it!
@@deanie3824 I'll just say I can't wait to hear your thoughts afterword haha! Honestly, I do hope that you like it more than I did! It will be fun to hear from someone with a different perspective if you do! ...and if you don't then it will be fun to discuss *that* angle...
I think people who hate this book just do not understand the complexity of the characters because they are so accustomed to one-dimensional characters *sips tea*
