Simply not worth it. Just go fishing with your buddy. Talk laugh and have a great time. And if your buddy chips in then great. If not he’s your buddy and you probably enjoyed the company. Not some stranger that you have nothing in common with. Boater or non boater. Tournament fishing is nonsense for most people.

Agree with everything you said except, netting boaters fish over or before my own. I've been both angler and co-angler. And I've always told my partner that if we double, we're on our own. Some situations may change that. But typically....your fish, your responsibility. Good video.

Some of this is good, some is crap. I don't expect my co angler to give me any money or help me at all. That's me personally. I know some boaters that will get pissed if that doesn't happen. The way o look at it is I'm fishing regardless if someone is on the back of the boat or not, my boat, my expense. If my co is able and willing to help, then cool. If not no sweat. Can't say the same for others. Being back boated is nonsense. There's numerous times where boat position will not allow you to get to the sweet spot, deal with it. If I did all the work to find that pattern and those fish and my boat position is critical to that pattern then why should the boater change. If the boater is doing it on purpose that's another story. It's not the boaters job to put co anglers on fish, it's your job as a co to read the conditions and catch your own fish. Now don't get me wrong, I will help my cos out with tips and stuff, but in no way am I being a guide and catering to put them on fish, not why I'm there. Be prepared as he says, but don't be a whiner when the day doesn't go your way. It's not your boaters fault you didn't catch fish, you're responsible for that.

Thank you! i agree, i dont mind paying my boater but if the boater is going where he wants to go, fishing the spots he wants to fish, at the angles he wants and the rules clearly state i cant make him go where i want to go, what am i paying for? Dont enter a tournament with a co if you dont want anyone in your boat or expect your co to make your boat payment. I paid my entry fee just like him and i have my own boat, i have never asked anyone to pay to go in my boat, cuz im fishing wherever i want no matter who is in my boat. For the record i always offer to pay no more than $40 bucks though. $60 is just ridiculous, but thats my opinion, pay whatever you feel. All boaters i have had have been super nice, some refused my money, some took it before i even got it out of my pocket🤣

Good night! I don't think so lol. I bring a max of 6 maybe 7 if it's a special circumstance. I'll bring extra reels and different lines if I think I should change up that drastically. I don't even mind using speed clips for things like crankbaits. One tackle bag that isn't super huge and maybe a small bag with extra clothes and refreshments/snacks.. the more you bring the more your mind is on what you can use next instead of using what you have properly.

I have watched a lot of these co angler prep videos and I have to say all the points made make sense. Gas money, respecting the boat, don't cast over boater, and others is pretty much common sense to me and funny that anyone would have a gripe about them. Let me tell you my rub. I have a problem with the pros saying don't worry if you don't catch a fish, treat it like a learning experience. What? My learning experience was how much it costs to undertake this journey. I have a dream of going pro like everyone else who's picked up a rod. I'm starting my first tour in MLF in the spring. I know what I have spent and what it will still cost me in entry fees, gas, food, lodging, and what ever else that rear it's head. So when a pro tells me to take it as a learning experience when they back boat me, then someone's lost the plot. My money is just as valuable to me as yours is to you. To try to break even I need a fish in the boat also. There aren't any sponsor tags on my shirt. You remember what that was like?

I fished as a co-angler last year (2018). I was skeptical. I have to say it was a good experience. I was lucky enough to have Ish Monroe on day one and learned a bunch. I caught some fish and learned much about tournament fishing. Ish was a great boater. The second day I fished with a lesser know 3-year pro and he was great as well. He spent the last couple hours of the tourney trying to get me on fish since he was out of it. I learned about drop-shotting techniques and baits. Overall it was a great experience. I met Roland Martin, Fished Lake Champlain, and rode in 2 great boats. If you love fishing I recommend it at least once.

@@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors you are right, it can be tough. I sucked up the back seat of a pretty knowledgeable amateur but I wasn't knowledgeable with how to be a co-angler. I am positive I was very irritating. It didn't help that I seemed to always have the wrong equipment tied on. The next and last time I did it, I had a boater that was willing to work with me and told me exactly how we would cover with spinner baits looking for fish. Both were glad I knew how to operate a boat (at least at idle) but definitely wished I could back the boat down for them. Great video. I fished the back of a boat for years in a local club. Those conditions were great learning experiences. I learned boat control safe operation. How to operate in bad weather and be safe. That was always instilled be safe we’re going home when theirs is over. They gave great instruction. Then I rode to a BASS event in northern New Mexico. First day of tournament on lake I’d never fished or practiced. End of first day, as non boater I was in second place my boater put us in some good water. I even doubled up twice with two smallies on my jerkbait retrieve. Was able to cull and was in 2nd place end of day second day storm and high wind no bite or fish but still finished 6th in the money. Fun learning experience.

Daves Rules to Being a gangsta co-angler: 1-Tell him to net his own fish, if he was a real pro he wouldnt have someone netting his fish. 2-If he’s constantly positioning the boat where you dont have anything, jump up on the front next to him and zing a few casts out there. Cast over his line, and yell at him to watch where he’s fishing. 3-If you go to set the hook and miss and a punching weight flys out the water and hits him say something like “get outta the way goddammit!” 4-If he’s really trying to press the issue or fight you the whole time about who gets to fish where, and taking the boat into places you dont like, take your pliers, open up the battery compartment and snip the trolling motor wires. 5-And Rick James the boat every opportunity you can- If he says anything about you making a mess or screwing up his boat say “Fuck Your Boat” dump dye on the deck and grind your feet in it constantly saying “fuck-your-boat” it’s his boat, he can clean it up. Your out there to catch fish, not be a maid. 6- Criticize everything. If he makes a bad cast, walk up and show him how to position his arm and body when casting. If he misses a fish and he’s using Honer hooks, tell him that wouldn’t have happened with Gamakatsu hooks, then explain that actually his whole hooksetting technique is weak, he didnt swing hard enough. Tell him he needs a rod with more parabolic bend, shoulda got G.Loomis rods instead of whatever he’s using.

@stevewinwood3674
@stevewinwood3674 4 года назад
@@PNguyen16 The idea that the co-anglers dont have boats is not correct most of the time. The co-anglers are people that have their own boat but the entry fees to be a co-angler is much lower than the boaters. The Boaters are the pros. the co-anglers are the amateurs. Most of the time the COs have a boat they just are not professional tournament anglers that spend the multiples of thousands of $ that the Pro is spending. Obviously the respective prizes that the Pros and COs get reflect the entry fees paid. Besides if you didn't have a boat spending money on a tournament instead of saving towards a boat would be silly for most.

Bottom holds plenty of trays to carry every hard bait, spinner & terminal tackle you would need for an entire day & the top has enough space for plastics, extra line, tools, etc. It's a great all day fishing bag. I could see how it would be great for co-angling, you could pretty much put everything in it you need other than a small cooler for drinks & your food.

My question to my boater. What are we fishing? Deep, mid, shallow water. That’s all I ask. There are things we disagree on but it’s situational. The max I give a boater is $40 that’s my budget. But if a boater blocks me from fishing that to this day is the only Boater I never paid. Been doing this since 2015. Learned a lot over these year ready for this next season I will say this... The main reason for co-anglers on these pro circuit is for the co to learn how to catch fish not to tell your boater to move the boat position so u can catch fish because your frustrated and I understand that it cost quite a bit to be a co angler but at the same time u have to understand that the pro is doing this for a living so whatever he does goes and u should not question it. being back boated is definitely not fun but at the same time they are the ones that have put the most money, time and effort into catching those fish and ultimately paying their bills. So if u go into co-angling with a mindset of your gonna try to win and catch the most fish during that event your probably not gonna learn very much because your mind is in the wrong place. be a co-angler to learn how to catch fish on different bodies of waters and conditions so that when u go to fish pro circuits yourself u have that knowledge from when u fished on the co-angler side. #1 rule is always respect the boater no matter how much time is left and u haven't caught anything. be a sponge because u can learn stuff from the pros even if u don't catch anything.

Completely agree it seems most people think of being a co angler as some sort of team tournament (which exist for those saying co angler isn’t fun) it’s about learning about how a pro fishes and breaks down the water and if you want to go somewhere in the fishing world it’s highly encouraged to start as a co angler to gain experience. 👍

Been a co for many tournaments try never to cast beyond the consoles unless the boater says different have been back boated by a few boaters will never let that happen again because it's just not right as a boater myself I never back boated a co as for gas have many boaters refuse to take money, I offer all my boaters forty bucks because basically I'm just buying them dinner dosen't matter if their number is called and they drop the trolling motor and never start the gas motor or if they decide to go 100 miles always take care of the boat like it's gold.

Respect...no “mad respect” to all the co-anglers out there! I give you fellas props Frfr! Especially if you have this guys mental attitude and respectfulness of the “pro” or whoever fishing in the front of the boat!!! With that being said, if I was ever good enough to tournament fish, I would def invest in my own boat and try my best to be the boat owner and running that trolling motor lol! Cause it just sounds like co-anglers/back of boat guy is literally like the red headed step child fishing! I do hear that co-anglers can make mega bucks themselves without the cost of a boat if not sponsored, but I’ve seen that your not with the same angler Every day and they may be fishing offshore compared to you killing the shallow water bank fishing day prior with someone else. But you get no say so in where ya Gunna fish everyday... blahhh to that

I will say one thing that if a boater expects me to give him money then I surely want the same luxury as him as to casting directions etc. The way I see it is the boater has the best part of this deal (I know he owns the boat). I have witnessed boaters that won't even stop casting long enough to net a non-boaters fish or even yells at him to horse the fish in so he does not have to wait. These boaters don't deserve to have a co-angler. My opinion!

60$ min gas money? Lol, I just ask how much he wants. Most of the time its only 30$. Now.. if the boater and I have a good time, sure ill definitely give gas money or maybe more than whst was asked. But as someone that is a boater as well - i personally wouldn't ask for gas money.. its my boat. And I'm gonna go fish where I want to. Now if I went somewhere my co angler wanted, I could understand wanting some gas money. But I feel like no boater should expect a co angler to always be hand and foot and just throw 60 bucks there way. Not against it by any means, but I feel like it should not always be expected.

Who knew gas money could create such controversy.....lol. I always felt $50/day seemed fair. Yes your boater might make a 2 hour run, but ultimately he’s doing that for himself and would be making that run if you weren’t in the boat with him. $50 for gas and some ice is plenty fair IMO......unless you get paired with Lou, then you have to add a bottle of Fiji water to the list. 😂

Stopped it at rule #1, if you can't start out good the rest certainly isn't any better. Be prepared you say, then on the heals of it say you are not sharing what you are doing. I bet then you would have the nerve to complain if the CO brought 8 rods and all his tackle. As a boat owner I can say if you want the CO to work with you, then you have to work with them. It doesn't hurt to share basic info so the CO can refine his set ups. If you can't share that without being threatened then you don't have what it takes to begin with.

At this point in the game I’d rather grab a buddy and fish a team tourney vrs going into a FLW event as a co. I agree and disagree with control your emotions. You also pay up to $500 to be a co angler which is a bunch of money.
