In December 2014, the UK Government released its cross-government Anti-Corruption Plan.1 The Plan brings together, for the first time, all of the UK’s activity against corruption in one place. Further explanation as to the purpose of the Plan is provided in the foreword: “The purpose of this plan is threefold: to demonstrate the breadth of the UK’s current anti-corruption activities; to set out clearly the actions that government will take to tackle corruption in the UK; and to set out our priorities for raising international standards and leading the global fight against corruption in all its forms.” The Plan is intended to apply to many sectors in society - including sport, which has its own dedicated section - and its strategic response to corruption will follow four P’s: Pursue, Prevent, Protect and Prepare.

What were the VAR officials doing in the UAE (the country that owns Man City) two days before this game? I've never been to the UAE in my life and probably never will. It's not making up the rules as they go along it's making sure the results are the correct results. If there is no integrity regarding the results of a match then the there is no faith in the integrity of the table, who wins the league by mere points, gets champion league spots by mere points, Europa league, relegation by mere points. They can't just award the goal later in the same half, because the incident had been followed by an offside free kick instead of a kick on the centre spot. But having been informed of the error at half time, the on field ref could have informed both coaches and agreed a Liverpool 'walk through' goal at the start of the second half. That was the easiest solution, breaks no rules, follows many earlier precedents and would have saved a mountain of sh*te to sort out later. What an opportunity missed!

I watched a Match of the Day from the early 2000s that randomly appeared on my suggested videos a couple of nights ago. There were THREE legitimate goals disallowed for offside in just one game - Middlesborough v Leeds - two of which were clearly onside by over a yard. One VAR clanger every 5 -10 games - as unjust and unfair as it is - is still a much, much lesser evil than 2 or 3 every single match without VAR. With that said, Liverpool have every right to feel cheated by some of the other decisions as well. I watched the Wolves v City game earlier in the day and, somehow, Wolves finished the game with 11 players in spite of multiple offenses that were the same/worse than the offenses that resulted in the 2 red cards against Liverpool. They could/should have had 2 players sent off in the first half alone - Hwang, both times, who scored the eventual winner. Human error is one thing, officiating games by completely different standards is another.
@sertero0962
@sertero0962 8 месяцев назад
It is easier to accept an error when it is made by a referee on the field, without the technology to back them. The game moves so fast that it is impossible to get everything right without technology, but the errors are a lot more accepted as people realise that and can accept some mistakes. If this had happened and VAR did not exist, I would obviously still be annoyed, but nowhere near as much as now, as VAR is actually a thing.

For the people saying get rid of VAR, if VAR was gone, the linesman had still incorrectly flagged it offside, so Liverpool would still be robbed of a perfectly good goal. Whats needed here is better communications. In rugby, the referee and the TMO team speak so clear about an incident that there is ZERO room for error. At no stage should there be contentious issues arrising from technology plus a separate team to assist the ref.

In rugby where the referee goes to the video officials he asks what he wants them to consider. So in this case, if they did the same as in rugby, the referee should have asked the VAR officials "Is there any reason not to give an offside decision and disallow the goal?" It seems to me this would have removed all confusion about what the referee was asking the VAR officials to look at.

The football var and ref seem to operate from a place of fear and insecurity. The rugby officials are collaborative. The pitchside monitor has become a piece of time wasting theatre to make out the ref has actually made the decision ultimately. In rugby the var makes the decision and the ref doesn’t feel insecure about it. There’s no need for the comfort of a monitor to look at because the rugby ref has asked for the review as you say. If they want to watch footage they do so on big screen far away from the baying fans.

Here’s my two cents. I’m sure no one cares but the EPL could learn something from the NFL. It should this: All decisions are made by the on the field refs. All VAR does is draw lines, slow down replay for out of bounds and line decisions, keep replay real time for everything else and provide alternate angles and the ultimate decision goes to the refs on the field. Not some weird team in a hub somewhere. All VAR do is provide the ability for the game refs to change their mind or not. Done. Nothing else. Provide data not decisions.

Ifab rule 10 is responsible for hamstringing referees. Once play is resumed VAR can't intervene again. What a stupid stupid stupid rule. Rules are there to promote integrity of the sport and must factor in justice and fairness. Refs were too scared to break ifab rule 10 in this case even though they knew they'd made an error. Not only is this rule now inadequate and must be immediately amended or scrapped before next round of fixtures, there's another rule that must be scrapped or amended. Yellow cards. Rules state VAR cannot intervene in incorrect distribution of yellow card unless mistaken identity or red card reversal. We see so many wrongful yellow cards handed out that affect games, tactics, player mentality for the rest of the game. VAR must be allowed to intervene when they see an error by the pitchside ref. This rule is only in place to protect the ego of referees. SPORTING INTEGRITY MUST COME BEFORE EGO, ALWAYS!!!

People are missing the bigger picture. VAR is not the problem, it’s part of it! The officials running it in this country are incompetent and if you take VAR out of it, you are not eliminating the problem that the officials in this country are corrupt. VAR was meant to help the officials but instead, it’s exposed them for how terrible they are at officiating Premier League games. Even though I do prefer watching football without VAR, that doesn’t change the fact that these officials are truly terrible!

The on field ref was informed on the error at half time. The easy solution then was to inform both coaches and agree for Liverpool to start the 2nd half with a 'walk through' goal. Why the hell did the on field ref keep quiet? What an opportunity he missed there!

Give the managers X number of call “challenges” per match, like the NFL. That way even if the ref and var can’t be bothered to take a look, they would have to.

The issue is not just the Diaz VAR blunder.....It was the way VAR was used for the Jones red card (showing still, prolonged image rather than real time play perceived as trying to influence the ref's decision of yellow card, the apparent unchecking of the suspected Gomez penalty etc.). In addition, the way the yellow and red cards were used throughout the game that sort of ruined it. The ref could have used verbal warning for instance in less significant events. For instance, why Salah was given a yellow card or why the decision was foul. Same for the Robertson yellow card and the Jota first yellow card, etc. It would be useful to release the VAR audio communication and also to review all the incidents (yellow/red cards, fouls, ?penalty against Gomez etc.) for the sake of transparency.

They have teo options 1. Replay the game and start all over again or 2. Start a rematch from the time Liverpool scored one goal. That's the only way both clubs could get justice in this scenario.

When VAR was introduced they said iwas "to eliminate clear and obvious errors". That was clear and obvious and they still messed up.

1:07 it sounds like VAR officials are only allowed to voice short sentences of 2 words or thereabouts, so “check complete” is supposed to be crystal clear 😂

VAR screwed that whole game up. Even for Jones’ red card, when they called the ref to the screen they showed him the tackle from a completely inferior angle?

Does the automated offside work in real time though? The goal would still have been disallowed by the linesman, which the VAR didn’t notice…automated offside says no offside, the VAR would still have said check complete and we have the same problem right?

Not for me, the worst was Chelsea vs Spurs & the hair pulling of Cucurella & Mike Dean seeing it & ignoring it because his mate Taylor was reffing the game. Spurs went straight down & scored thus earning Spurs a point. That directly cost CHelsea two points & didn’t receive half the outrage.
@djspacehopper8728

It did at first, but it seemed to get swiftly brushed under the carpet and forgotten about. That right there with Mike Dean was admitting to corrupting a game, purposely not giving a foul. Just the same as they didnt give Diaz his goal. Football stinks, has done for decades now. A corrupt business pretending to be a fair sport using "human error" and "mistakes" as an excuse for it to continue with no questions asked.

The issue is how much taking goes on between the VAR and the referee all while 60000 fans shouting at them - the act should be var tell ref looking into issue - then no communication with ref until they tell him decision ie go to monitor, goal or no goal - needs to be that simple and clear

its easy to forgive 1 bad VAR call its easy to forgive 1 bad red card because of a still image its even possible to accept the second yellow on jota but all 3!? guys are missing the point... all 3 mistakes coming from the same couple individuals sure we will move on as Liverpool is already used to being suppressed by fines and such but yeah, the way this has been handled has undermined EPL's standards and the message to future clubs is "no matter what we do even if its wrong, u should accept and nothing will be done, else all u get is a fine and we move on without u" in this day and age, this is just mindblowing. there are always speculation about corruption and FA and PGMOL allowing this to be settled like this just further supports the speculation

I know it's early in the season but recent history shows that any team competing for the Premier league will be very lucky to have 1 or 2 points more than Manchester City at the end of the campaign. Decisions made in this game could potentially cost liverpool the league. Just saying..... Get rid of var, it's destroying the game.

They were probably watching a film and got the call in check this situation. In rugby, yes different game but still the ref says live on the audio to the video team, check X for me, show me the incident at full speed to get context, especially red cards. Showing slow motion and a still image of where a foot landed but not showing there foot slipped off the ball first is also appalling. With the offside you can see its not offside just with the paused screen.
