For those that don’t know, This is a roof drain that runs through the inside of a building. Everything inside is melted plus whatever is on that large roof is partially melted probably. that’s roughly a 6” pipe that’s a lot of dang water! He just helped save his building and rubber roof from damage
I’ve seen a guy almost have his head blown off doing something similar. He lost an eye that day for sure, he never was the same after that. Never look up/down the pipe, especially with that much pressure behind it. Ice cannon.
Oh my goodness!!! WOW! That is actually what I thought I was going to see in this video. I actually though the pressure was going to bust the pipe off and the water was going to come gushing out almost horizontally towards his face. He is lucky that it wasn't as an extreme of a release like the story you're sharing here.
@@dcle944 pvc is fairly heat resistant and with the ice acting to keep it cool you could likely heat the pipe surface. It may get to using the hammer honestly.

I'm a plumber, and what was coming out of that pipe was super clean compared to some of the horror blockages I've experienced. You definitely need a strong stomach.
That's an overflow outlet and your roof is probably flooded. The outlet you're banging on is connected to an overflow drain on your roof that sits higher than your primary drain. You wont see water from that outlet unless there's an issue with your primary roof drains and the roof is flooding. Its set up that way because most commercial roofs don't get a lot of traffic, and that overflow outlet acts as a ground "alarm" to let you know there's something wrong on the roof. So if you're on the ground and see water coming out the overflow, you know you got a problem. Unclogging that overflow isn't going to solve your issue if the primary drain is blocked. You really need to get that roof inspected, PRONTO, by a commercial services roofer. If you have any kind of defect, the water's freeze/thaw cycle will cause expensive damage to your EPDM membrane, your draining system, your insulation and your decking. That water you unclogged is a warning, so listen to the warning.

Mine sure did when we had an ice storm last November in the Puget Sound area. It cost a lot of money to fix and thousands of gallons in wasted water flooding my carport and garage.
I’ve done this. Only the buildings I worked at were constructed over the Boston waterfront. The roof drains emptied under the buildings and one winter they got plugged with ice. All the drain lines were backing up and we were seeing leaks everywhere. Once we figured out the issue my company bought us a small dingy and during low tide we paddled under the buildings to release the plugs. I had a blowtorch and ice pick and freed up all the pipes. The rush of water was so intense. Looking back now I can’t believe I did that for the shit company I worked for.

For those that really don’t know it’s a roof drain overflow meaning the drain is blocked and that’s just the overflow. Roof drains run straight down and under the floor of the building so they don’t freeze so this is an indication that someone needs to get up there and unblock the drain.
This is what a real hero looks like. Lots of people could be affected and massive amounts of trash produced if water backed up. Thanks for your service as I am sure that water wasn't ice cold👍.

Spent first half of the video checking comments to see if something happens, watched last half seeing water drain and now spending time questioning how I spend my life.
That is why I noticed draining pipes with heating cables in them. Seems reasonable to install cable in pipe and avoid pipe bashing which can break the pipe too.
I thought that's what we was waiting for, figured a couple good wacks and that plastic was going to snap off. I live where we see -20 sometimes and you don't beat on plastic in that cold lol😂

I have PTSD from captive drains. I worked in a warehouse with a flat roof. when they extended it they did a captive drain on the extension. I told the manager he was nuts, and he told me he was a certified civil engineer. 2 storms later the extension had no roof and I was stuck bining up insulation and sheet metal.
I get it. As a former regional hotel/property manager, my maintenance/engineering team and I had some challenges beyond belief if you were not there to truly witness it, I’m sure you wouldn’t believe it. I learned a lot and amazed at their quick thinking skills to resolve and repair numerous issues.

Water weighs about 8 pounds per Gallon. That is a lot of weight on any roof. That pipe should have one of those electric "tapes" running thru it to keep it open and warm.
Had a similar situation with ice build up that went waaaaaay too long without maintenance. Lesson learned, dont go 5 years without defrosting the mini fridge freezer, otherwise you get a 4lb ice block that doesnt allow you to close the freezer door anymore

I’m 44, and got into Anime in the 90s, and then Japanese architecture/carpentry. I got married and had kids (which are all ASD). I started to make real financial progress before COVID, but inflation afterwards wiped it out. Both the wife and I now work full time and have gigs on the side so that we aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but can pay off debt and save. I’m not sure if I’ll ever make it to Japan 😅 but I sure enjoy your videos, so please keep at it!
