Michele N I’ve just been buying new thumb sticks and replacing them myself. It’s a lot cheaper. Mine aren’t under warranty so it doesn’t affect that and I’m not spending $30-60 every time.
The ability to trade fossils, fruit, money, etc is built into the game. If it was cheating (ie against the Nintendo User Agreement) it would not be allowed. And the game would be about a millionth as fun. I mean, the ONLY way to get different fruit is to trade, and you at least get miles for getting all the fruit trees. You get NOTHING in game or out for finishing the museum...other than a pretty fossil gallery.
Isn't trading/giving items a main part of the game?? How is giving fossils 'cheating'? Like you're meant to trade the fruits and different colours of things, how is trading fossils any different?

To be honest, I care less if you Time skip or get items that some people assume you shouldn’t have, it’s Animal crossing people, the goal of the game is to make your own DREAM island and be happy with it, if you can’t respect people time skipping even though it’s not YOUR island or how YOU play the game, then take a step back and think in there perspective, like for example some people don’t want to wait for villagers to move out or trees to grow or wait for certain Bugs / fish to be active, I don’t even Time skip but I will respect anyone and everyone that do!
My reason for not wanting to TT is mostly so that I have a daily reason to go back to the game. I got a late start, and saw a LOT of people who got the game at release and TT'd and used other exploits like duplication to get every little thing get burnt out by the time I started....including Abdallah. So I decided to just play the game the way it was intended, for my own satisfaction. I'm not going to fault anyone for playing their own game the way they want.

If theres so many ppl with star trees, why doesn’t nintendo just be like “hey, ppl like this, this is a neat idea, lets make special trees where they are a one time bloom like bell trees” instead of banning players for liking a neat aesthetic
Yee, then it atleast “looks” like nintendo is listening, heck, they could release it on halloween this year since theres gonna be a full moon on the 31st of October supposedly. The trees could even be a glistening white pastel that looks thin and bare but has pretty vines that hang around the branches like fairy lights and three or four stars hang from those very vines. If a person shakes the tree, it’ll go dark and creepy and you can then obtain stars with less headache. The tree is aesthetically multi purpose so the ppl who like creepy or goth things get something too. Heck, there could even be new recipes that use the new amount of stars just for the two different types of trees.
This is an amazing idea! Maybe nintendo can do a special event likea star festival or something where you can unlock star trees. I do not have star trees on my island but idc if people do because it doesn't affect me at all. How people chose to play the game is on them. People who go after others and report them over this foolishness is petty imo. We are already dealing with a pandemic and people use this game as a creative outlet to escape and now have to worry about being banned. I guess Karens exist in Animal crossing which is sad because this community is mostly friendly, non toxic, and helpful. Stuff like this just creates division within the community...
I wish they'd put polls up on twitter about ideas and let us vote on what we'd like. We're the ones that are paided/playing the game and if it means other new people find out about the game and see all these cool new features in it then maybe they'd get more sales.
Thinking about it, I don't really think there is a way to horribly cheat in AC. I play traditional, but have no issue with the folks that time travel at all. Duplication glitches? Neat that someone discovered it, but why would anyone need it? I think the star trees are awesome. The short of it is, someone else using hacks/mods doesn't effect my gameplay at all, so why worry? The problem with duplication is that it causes massive inflation in online trading. If you want to trade for a super popular villager like raymond expect to pay atleast 50 million bells or 2k nook miles tickets which is impossible to do legitimately. to earn 50million from turnips (assume buy price 100 sell price 600) you would need to buy 100,000 turnips for a price of 10million and would need 1000 squares of free space to drop them. It would take around 30 transactions to buy all the turnips and you would have to drop the turnips and withdraw more bells between each transaction. Selling them would take 25 transactions with you needing to head to the bank and pick up turnips between each transaction. picking up/ dropping an item takes about 1 second. just dropping and picking up the trunips is going to take 30 minutes just in animations. visiting a friends island will make the whole process take a couple extra hours as you are adding an extra 5+ minutes of load screens for every trip. so your overall gold per hour is actually fairly poor.

Megan Vito That’s exactly the point I make when someone says it’s cheating. Looking at other games like Yo-Kai Watch 2 or ORAS, they have time based events that lock up if the system clock is altered. They could’ve easily done that with AC: NH, but they didn’t.

Pretty trees isn't cheating in my book. If someone uses it to scam then of course its not ok. I remember seeing a video from creator who was so angry at the trees and couldn't figure out why. I like how measured and neutral you are about how others play and this channel has turned me in to a Nintendo player. I do feel like some people have had alot of extra time to worry about these things.

there was a post on the animal crossing reddit about a social media thats erging people to report people hacking and 'cheating'. as far as im concerned, if it's not impacting on other people's games then i don't see the issue. abdallah always warn people about the risks of the things he shows.

The game is fairly bland and I lost interest after a month or so. In regards to Mr. Abe Lincoln here, I wake up at 4am everyday....travel 2 hours to work, work 10 hrs, and then drive home 2-4 hrs depending on traffic...this is a definite reason to cheat for myself. Abe, you're essentially telling me I have only the option of EVER playing the game between the times of roughly 8pm til roughly 10pm, because thats what I do. And considering the game runs on real-world time, I would never ever get to enjoy anything that revolves outside of those 2 hours, and that's probably 90% or more of the game. So sorry Abe, there are times when cheating is O.K., especially when it doesn't hurt or effect anybody else. And just to be clear on what I'm referring to, it's the time travel aspect, so now I can keep up and enjoy all that I miss otherwise.

Cheating is defined by merriam-webster as: "To violate rules dishonestly" or "the act or an instance of fraudulently deceiving" "Time Travelling" the mechanic of advancing the system clock, with no external software or hardware, to advance through in-game days, is not any form of deceit or violation of honesty, for the system clock mechanic is not required to match the IRL time. Thus, it is my opinion that "time travelling" is not cheating. It is a mechanic that every Nintendo Switch console is capable of, and therefore is not born of some unbalanced benefit. If Cheating is qualified by deceit, dishonesty, or application of extrinsic force for the purpose of an unequal benefit, then hacks, scams, external software, hardware, and other tools that promote unequal rewards is cheating. The caveat to this, is that, when items and resources are obtained through external software or hardware, if the items are not USED to promote an unequal benefit, then I have no problem. Case in point, possessing "star trees" in a dream address or on an island. As long as access to these rare resources is restricted from everyone, or freely available, in equal measure to all players, then there is no "unequal benefit" and I posit that there is no harm, and no foul. Scamming is based entirely in dishonesty and deceit, and is cheating. The same goes for stealing. Willingly donating valuable items like golden tools to a new player is not cheating, rather it is an extension of good will. The donation of golden tools to a new player shows the kindness of the player, and their generosity. That is is no way deceitful or dishonest, and therefore is not cheating. You can see my criteria, and how I would extrapolate it out for each of the complaints of cheating, whether they be valid or not.
Good analysis. But at the end of the day. Nintendo has the final say on what is “cheating” which means getting these items through external hardware is not allowed. In my opinion people shouldn’t go reporting islands but they are not in the wrong to report them. And Nintendo should do better with declaring what is not allowed in their games.
So in a nutshell, I’m saying since they don’t punish time travellers in any way like they do in other games with time-based events (Yo-Kai Watch 2, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) it shouldn’t be considered cheating.

The Random Gamer Just becasue someone has a star tree doesn’t mean they are creating. It’s for display purposes. Only salty people would report innocent players who bought the trees from other players. Buyers aren’t the ones who invented the trees.
I think the argument is that impressionable kids may come to an island and see a star tree and got interested but confused because they can never get one, and they would look around and risk ending up with a shady trade with hackers and stuff like that. If I was Nintendo I would just actually make an official way to actually obtain it like being able to decorate trees with items of your choice, idk they made the camera glitch official so maybe they can do it with this, edge trees and 4th level decorating too.
Also they haven’t banned duplicated items, and items obtainable only through time travel like Christmas and New Year stuffs, despite it’s clearly “cheating”, but there is still an official way to get them, so it’s less about what is cheating and more about them trying to keep things official I guess

I personally don't consider it "cheating" so much as "straying from the vision of the game." That said - in my opinion, it's fine to stray from the vision of the game. The purpose of a game shouldn't be to railroad you with a bunch of rules, but to let you have fun (as long as you're not spoiling the fun of others).
I be time traveling because since I work I would never be able to get turnips and other things..so I would skip forward to have a chance to get them, Sid I got a little over board now? Yeeeah but I think time traveling is fun...plus I have no patients lol
The creators of the game don’t even consider time traveling cheating! I time travel at times because I don’t really like playing the game “at night”, I prefer to play with the in game daylight especially if I’m terraforming. While I respect the Nintendo COC, at the end of the day I agree with your thoughts. These items, in no way, affect other people. "Cheating" implies that there's an end result and others are using unethical methods to get there. It's been stated, in many places, that AC is more of an endurance trial, versus a sprint. This isn't something you throw 300 hours down on and you complete the game. It's a creative place where people express themselves in whatever way they deem worthy of their attention. I have seen some stunning 5 Star islands that took 1000+ hours (and I live in envy at their creativity), just like I've seen some serious hot messes (like my current island xD ). Neither have affected my gameplay. Neither have changed the way I approach AC (except maybe to inspire me to try something different with layout). With everything going on outside right now, it's nice to have this as a means to decompress. Taking that away from someone who wants something unique on their island is ridiculous.
It's only a problem because people think it is. 'CHEATING IS BAD' is the saying, which, if you _CHEAT_ and you only affect yourself, how is it cheating? To "Cheat" someone is for malicious intent, which you aren't doing it to yourself.
Because Nintendo owns the source code. It's Nintendo's private property. Changing or modifying is illegal. Second of all, it's against the EULA which is a contract you abide by in order to participate in Nintendo's services. If Walmart says I need to wear shoes in the store, that is their right.

The community before new horizons was waaay better than this new community. Back then, no one cared what you had and what you did. Even hackers gave away lightsabers and so forth for fun! Didn't corrupt save files at all. Now the community is filled with Karens who care too much what you have on your island. Apparently they can dictate what you can and cannot have on your island.
Back in Wild World, people would come to your town and drop things known as seeds that had the potential to brick your town and even your entire DS, so no, the community wasn't better before New Horizons :p
I'm a mom and love playing Animal crossing with my husband and kids 💕. And I say as long as you are having fun and not hurting or being mean to anyone else . You do you and enjoy the game and be respectful.

When you signed up for Online, and even to play online on AC, you agreed to the terms that they put out. It doesnt matter if you "Paid $60", you went and said Yes to the rules that they set up and if you break them, you get into trouble. If I bought a car, does that mean I can go at any speed limit I wanted because I "paid" for it? No.

the creators of animal crossing welcome time travel, they've said they use it themselves and understandable that people will use it. It makes sense for adults playing the game to use time travel as they wont be free to catch things 100% of the time

Um, you sorta worded it wrong. There are cheats that could affect other players but there are cheats that are harmless. This one is harmless though because it isn't hurting anybody at all.
To me people who take advantage on others like monetising nmt, bells, villagers, good turnip price etc for real money (or insane amount of nmt) is much more concerning than as simple as having star trees for your own personal island aesthetic/item crafting purposes. ACNH isn’t like most games nowadays that has extra content you’re required to buy, whatever you earn in ACNH, you can earn it free so I don’t think people are supposed to sell in game items for real money. Exactly! Reporting others for playing their way is petty. If anything, people selling in game items like simple panels and villagers for actual money is something I actually find bothersome. I saw people selling in game items on ebay.

I personally don’t think it was the trees. When I visited every time I would go in and out the rooms I would see camo cat glitch and light up. That being said, I’m glad I was able to visit your island when I did. It was a great experience and I think everyone has a right to do what they want to their island.

About giving bells and the golden tools. That’s not cheating. That’s just helping a friend out. Infact, my friend helped me with golden tools. He didn’t just give me them, he asked me if I wanted them. Also by that time I had been playing for 5 days and wasn’t a noob. I time travel. Edit: My golden axe broke :(
I must be onest I’m not the biggest fan on hacking I don’t like it personally but other people can like it. And a sad person is trying to get people banned for doing what they want. @@leesgomesI agree. Why else do the villagers give us DIYs when they realize that we already know that particular item? They encourage us to give them to our friends! That is NOT cheating!
I was unable to exploit any of this stuff. The trees, the duplication because of the updates. I missed out but oh well. I did do the time travel for a bit but my life gets in the way. Personally I’m better off booting the game and playing what I can and having fun. So I go in do my stuff. Fix my island and have fun. But, I visited places that play for 1000+ hours and have those trees and I find them pretty. It works out for them. The community is super nice. Let’s keep it that way. Why should we ruin other people when they have something that’s considered ‘cheating’? Is it really cheating? We play games how we want cuz we like them. What works for some doesn’t always work for others. We play our way and enjoy it. With that said, love your videos Abdallah.
I work eight hours a day almost every day of the week. I have limited gameplay time so when I do play, I time skip a day or two to expedite things like moving buildings and making bridges or growing trees. Given this game isn’t a competition, I don’t know why anyone cares how I play.
I do the same! I do go back though so I won't miss any updates or gameplay I might have missed. I only go ahead a few days at a time then come back to the actual date.
Kathryn Wass Exactly. Otherwise I miss out on things like Gulliver visits or chances to buy certain items. I think a lot of players who might be out of work or very young are making these judgements.
If you get annoyed or jealous by other people time travelling or trying to make their island look beautiful, sorry to break it to you but then the game isn't for you.
I agree more or less. Since it’s not a competitive game there’s no real way to “cheat”. Other than scamming other players or stealing from them which is just wrong. Everyone should just play the game how they want to and not worry about anyone else. I think the Star trees are pretty and I wanted some but the trading boards are over whelming. I haven’t even managed to trade for all the fruit yet without getting stressed out just by the idea of trying.
This just reminds me of the witch hunts for Pokemon Go users that were using fake GPS apps. I was banned for that, and yet being a bedridden invalid didn't make it right, even though there was no competitive acts occurring. I feel the game companies are going overboard and putting the cart before the horse. Some people just want to enjoy the game. Not everyone is out to beat others.

Tbh the fact that at least half of the players make star trees if the game is to make your island you own aesthetic is cool but if somone wants a space themed island it would be neat if they just added star tees
I had someone almost report me for having a statue of David out side my Museum and I thought it was ridiculous because if there was an actual problem Nintendo would have put a leaf over it but to avoid conflict I had to change the statue. 😑
For my part, I don't really care if someone wants to play the game however they want on their own system, but it's an issue of what you're representing the game to be towards others. It's "bad" in that it builds a expectation of what the game is in the public eye (from the company standpoint, wholly unacceptable to allow for in their game, plus they're paying to host it for others on your behalf). It's equivalent to playing proxies or silver bordered cards in MTG: you want to do something at home, fine, but you don't go to a public event with that stuff as the company needs to protect their IP and brand by making a clear distinction of what they have made the game to be. Doesn't really matter if you just want to play a game with your friends privately, you can't do that in their hosted event space or it's a problem for them that they allow it, irrespective of it 'not hurting anyone' directly, as it at least sets precedent to allow, opening the issue for later issues in displaying discrimination in what they choose to allow or ban, which is worse. You own a copy as long as you're playing locally offline, but regardless of private or public intentions of viewership, once you take that island online it's back in Nintendo's rights to refuse to host it if it doesn't measure up to the outlined code of conduct. If you repeatedly upload illegitimate content on their servers, that also notably constitutes company harassment in the EULA, as you pointed out. This is Nintendo, they have historically been very heavy handed in making sure people play their games as intended, so I don't know what you'd expect their position to be: this is the company that sued Galoob for making game genies to be used in their systems, so from their standpoint you certainly are wrong about it being your choice how you play your game.
I honestly have no problem with hacking like this. I hadn't really thought about it before. To play devil's advocate, I guess I can see why Nintendo doesn't want people hacking New Horizons. Being able to change things within the game could lead to online issues, like malicious islands, if that's even possible. I think hacking and modding are very interesting, but from a legal standpoint, I completely understand Nintendo's views. Still can be less than fun as a player if you're into that sort of thing, but hey, what can you do.
Why can’t people just get over the fact that people can play the game the way they want ?? YOU paid for the game, why cant do what YOU want on YOUR game? Why are people out here bashing and giving people grief about the way THEY wanna make there island look, man and I thought the animal crossing community was a good one yet all people do is pick on other people for how they play there games that THEY paid for. @@ianthefirth But they're not using the code in scrupulous ways, either. And, if they actually bought a physical copy? No, it's not a license, it's a proper copy. The only way those 'rules' apply is if it's online, because it then affects other people, which, a good chunk of these 'hacks' don't affect others anyway.
@@BeckyNosferatu it's a license, physical or digital. Check the terms of service, all software is licensed this way, you don't own it, and Nintendo can take it away at any time. As for affecting others, it does, in many roundabout ways, some that Nintendo is not interested in. Person sees a screenshot of an island with star trees? Hey! I want that game! Buys it, and can't find star trees. Misrepresentation of the product, which can harm the brand. Prior to hacking trees, duping affected everyone as prices for items skyrocketed out of reach of a player playing the game normally. Everything cheaters and hackers do eventually will effect everyone.
@PowderSnom (well, I tried to just do a neutral comment but you done called me out) Changing the date is not a gameplay feature, it is a NECESSARY feature for any modern device. And in point of fact, it is LESS of an intended feature now than it used to be. In the earlier Animal Crossing games, changing the clock was a function you could do within the game itself, now you HAVE to SUBVERT the game by going through the system settings. I don't see why no one understands this. The system menu is NOT part of the game, it's part of the CONSOLE!!! Now calling it cheating, which I am doing, is not the same as condemning you for having fun with the product you paid good money for. But it is cheating and I do hate when people lord their ill-gotten achievements over those of us who can't have done these things playing legitimately. When a town has ALL the Zodiac furniture for example, you're LITERALLY not supposed to have that yet, and seeing it plastered all over youtube is spoiling a part of the game that non-time travelers SHOULD have been able to look forward to discovering in their own time. As someone who typically doesn't watch youtube videos unless I need information for a game, it's aggravating that I can watch an Animal Crossing video for one specific bit of info only to get untold other spoilers because youtubers have absolutely no respect for people who do play by the actual rules. And yes, there are rules, if there aren't rules than it ceases to be a game. Again, you're free to do whatever you want. But I don't want to hear about your zillion bells from the stalk market or how you got all 40 sea creatures in July or how you're a Northern Hemisphere island with snowmen already. People should keep that between their friends rather than broadcasting it to the world. Of course, they won't, so I have to censor all the videos I watch myself. (basically scarcely looking at the screen) I really wish there was some other good game out this year to take up my attention so I'd stop watching spoilers =_=
@PowderSnom agreed. It is too bad that we couldn't have DIYs for those star and crystal heart trees though. They look so pretty, but I won't go and buy them for sure.

To be precise, like 2 people on their team have gone on record stating that they personally don't see it as cheating. That is certainly not the entire team or company. And, well...these two people are simply wrong. Maybe they're saying it for good PR since time travel is the more popular way to play, but they are wrong. Anything that goes against the program of a game is technically cheating. Now I'm not saying that to insult you, but people gotta quit lying to themselves. I have done thought-bubble resetting to kick out specific villagers. I don't sit on a high horse and call that a feature. It is absolutely cheating. It is not how the game intends you to do things. I'm not trying to BAN time travelling, here, but... you're still cheating. If it makes you feel bad to be told that, it's your problem, not mine.

This kind of cracking down on a game like Animal Crossing doesn't make any sense. It's not a serious game at all and you have to deliberately go out of your way to travel to the islands\interact with the players doing these things. Also, there are no micro-transactions or any money being spent in-game for any of this. So, what is Nintendo really getting out of doing this?
What I can say about "it's your game that you bought with your money, you can do anything as long as it doesn't harm anyone" is clearly no the position of Nintendo EULA, Japanese folk have a different way to feel about this, what I interpret as "we created this world, you pay your 'visa' to live here as long as you abide to the way we intended this game experience to be, or else..." And they have been banning lots of people because of this, the rest of the world have values that differ greatly from those of the big N company
If you modify the game’s code, it’s cheating. I don’t care if you time travel. But if you get items that can’t be obtained through normal gameplay, you can get banned and you have no right to appeal the ban.
Most people who have been either giving away or trading these trees have said that in the code it says it's a money tree but it looks like a star tree.

I consider adding mods to a game, even if for aesthetic purposes, is cheating if it's a game that's not supposed to have mods to begin with. Mods can break the game and can ruin the experience for many people. Is the possibility of breaking something everyone loves worth a few pretty trees? I really don't think so. The only cheat I've ever used was the time rewind and only on Sundays if I get up too late to buy turnips. If I'm past Sunday, I wait until next Sunday. Lately, I don't even do the rewind for that anymore.
It's kinda like people with their LEGO sculptures right? Some lego fans are going to stick two pieces together in a fun new way and let gravity hold it together (think of putting a long plate into the underside of a big brick and building around it). But LEGO company isn't going to send out buyable sets that have builds with weird connections (I mean, it can be done, but it doesn't go with the "flow" and seamlessness that LEGO has created). The fact that they are letting you still play the game but not let you send out an advertisement of sorts (via Dream Addresses) for "a new way of building" is exactly like this LEGO example. They're letting you play the game your way that you find it fun, while also saying, this isn't a normal way of playing the game. They know people time travel; waiting to send out updates for time related content is their way of slowing the transmission down.
At the end of the day, this is just a game and don't need to be too serious 🥺 Btw I love your passion to the game and your content is always on top of notch, keep it up Abdallah 😊
