9:04 - There was a recent video about textures in games Apparently, texture artists will take all sorts of bizarre images for sources because sometimes something completely random looks more like the object once applied in game than the actual object. Sort of like coconuts for horse hooves

I used to put rude “Easter Eggs” in my games as a kid learning how to program, but once I got into the industry that ended fast. I would never leave things like these working on a AAA title (or any professional title for that matter) and it’s baffling that some people aren’t able to separate play coding at home for yourself and professional coding at work for others. The last rude thing I put in code was ~19 years ago at my first job, and it was a bug that had kept me in the office for 8 extra hours. The boss was checking my builds from home as I made progress. Finally I fully solved the issue, I was so confident that if the bug had happened again, it would have shown a message box and cussed out my boss at his house. He ended up never seeing that message box because I had in fact fixed the bug, but then a coworker saw it the next day and I decided to just never do anything like that again.

They were pretty much all male workplaces back then in a time long before outrage culture and smart phones to record evidence. Where practical jokes which were rude and sexual were pretty much everyday practise. When it gets normalised like this people stop thinking it's unprofessional when everyone at work is in on the joke. Heck it still happens today, although it's much more likely someone is going to take offense and blow the whistle to the game press like we've seen over the last few years.

@@Larry Do a video on the rudest things employees have left in the workplace! I can give you one right off the bat: 4 years ago when I worked at Deep Silver Dambuster Studios Ltd., a disgruntled employee left a shit on the men’s bathroom floor! We had a meeting wherein DNA tests and other methods of finding who did it were discussed. I believe there were questions surrounding the legality of DNA testing and in the end no methods were used. Most of the rest of the meeting was about airing grievances in case anyone else had any, perhaps worried that a 2nd shit would land on the floor if they didn’t get it all out in the meeting! No pun intended! This was following the wind-down of Homefront: The Revolution while warming up to a new project. If I recall correctly, the grievance was related to too much overtime or otherwise disruptive work hours. I don’t know if they found out who did it, but it was the 2nd time it had happened!

LOL, j/k But seriously that's one hell of a story and I can't imagine working in a place that would actually push a person to the point where they thought that was the right thing to do! I knew that game studios can be extremely hostile and toxic places to work but I guess I never thought it'd make someone **** on the bathroom floor in anger! Or maybe we're just looking at it the wrong way...Maybe the culprit just had really, really bad aim and was too embarrassed or scared to admit it after everyone found out and thought it was malicious prank. Lastly, I need to know...Who was charged with picking it up??? Talk about getting the **** end of the stick! LOL, it'd be karmic justice if the guy who did it, ended up being the one tasked to pick it up!

When I was going to school for video game design, I was working on a pirates vs. ninjas themed game, and we had a beach level with palm trees, of course. I was working on the models and textures and I snuck my own easter egg in. I used pot leafs to make the palms on the palm trees and it ended up looking so good that no one noticed and I couldn't help but feel proud. I still consider if there is a clever way to use something else before I make something from scratch because of this.

I wonder if any sports game has ever appreciated in value. I feel like that's a genre that's inherently designed for older games to immediately become dirt cheap and forgotten the very second a new game covering the same sport is released.

Only recalled ones as far as I know. There's some gamecube Basketball game that sells for 250$ or higher used, NBA elite 11 on PS3, and more obscure titles like Super Copa that can reach a high price too.

This is very much it. Unless there is a comunity dedicated solely to a particular edition of some yearly soccer game (and I know there are some Ps2 PES fans out there), licensed sports games have their value pretty much in having an updated roster to enhance the simulation aspect of them. I guess the really valuable sports videogames would be things like the arcade version of Tehkan World Cup with dial controllers, or things like that.

Hey, if a texture works, it works. I'm a digital illustrator for a living and when my best friend in high school got married, my gift to her was designing her stationery and making a big portrait of her and her husband in their wedding outfits. I used chain link fencing and piles of scrap metal for textures in the bodice of her dress because it just... worked. She thought it was incredibly amusing when I pointed it out to her, and now she points it out to anybody who looks at the portrait in her house. lol

Older systems spun slower than modern games. Filling up the disc meant that instead of reading 'blank' awaiting some data would take less time than reading 'irrelevent data' until the system got to something it could read.

@@Casanuda they only had to do that because the files on the disc weren't squished together as good as they should have been (like how a fragmented HDD reads and writes slow until it gets defragmented because it has to go all over looking for the pieces of a file or empty space where new files can be stored)

If you look closely enough...most of the best child-friendly cartoons exhibit rather suggestive adult content at times. However, they do it in the most brilliant fashion. In my humble opinion, the mark of a genius cartoonist is when you can add a racy adult theme joke to the show in such a way that the kids find it funny for X reason and the adults smirk for Y reason. I'm always amazed by Looney Tunes. As a child, I was fascinated by watching the farcical hi-jinx of the characters. As an adult, I find appreciation in the cultural references and the innuendo I missed in my youth. Cartoons like that are an absolute treasure - you love them as a kid then find a whole new appreciation for them as an adult.

*Scoffs.* I remember the days before the internet when a kid got a 'Playboy' or learn a curse/swear words they would turn into a feral rapist, rob banks and hustle street drugs the next day. After the internet the new generation is all 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome' slaughter fest, where all the cities are on fire. God forbid a parent should have an awkward conversation about the birds and the bees and manners, because once a child hears about sex or any adult situation, they are corrupted beyond repair. The PS1 version has both the chest and groin of the succubus completely uncovered in the game, and the original artwork even showed her topless. As a result, they cropped her character portrait to remove that - then cropped all the other character portraits to match stylistically to avoid making it look like anything was afoul.

The story behind the Southpark video in Tiger woods is that the team needed to fill the disk. That video had been circulating around the office and someone realized that it was exactly the size of the space they needed to fill. It was supposed to be temporary fix until they found something to replace it with. But like most temporary fixes that are supposed to be properly fixed later, it was forgotten about because the problem it solved went away and crunch gives you tunnel vision. Until someone found it. Then there was a collective "oh #$%^, we never replaced that?" and the guy that added the file to begin with was sacked. I will not name names. But that is what happened.

I remember that Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy had an Easter egg in the Temple of the Moons level where, if Keen went to a certain spot where there was a moon on the ground and stood idle long enough, he would moon the player. I'm guessing most players of the game never knew about that one though. And this type of thing isn't limited to video games. At one point in the early 2000s Asus sent out a driver CD for something (don't remember exactly what, I think it was a video card of some sort) which for some unknown reason had a porn film on the disc.

I worked at EAC at the time of the South Park episode. Although we weren't the studio responsible for the game, our mastering techs got a copy of the 'gold' version of the game (because that's just what they do in Mastering, not much else going on when a build's not being burned for testing) and when the news broke, Those of use QA dogs with friends in the mastering lab headed over there to find they had the disk in a PC already and were playing 'Spirit of Christmas' from it and laughing at 'those dumbasses' who used it to pad the size of the disc out.

the Ass Error in the thumbnail is incorrect it's found when making custom maps not digging in the files it's a halo 2 specific engine crash error of the format ".ass" (amalgam scene specification) being incorrectly exported to find out more you can look on the fandom wiki for halo 2 under ".ass"

As a 3D artist I can see potential in that poo, lol. Sometimes you find a texture that works. I have never found poo before and went that works. I never even thought of that. I have went with other things stretch and distorted but never poo.

What's interesting about the NBA Jam line "GET THAT SHIT OUT OF HERE" is that it actually got referenced in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition. If you steal a ball from an opponent, there's a chance Tim will yell out "GET THAT SHITAKE MUSHROOM OUT OF HERE!".

Larry, I know it's a bit obscure these days despite how public it was in 2014, but would you be able to do a history of the "Supercut" from Destiny please? There's something so fascinating about the story and characters changed, how they repurposed the characters (The Crow/Prince Uldren & Rasputin's avatar/The Exo Stranger) and how some locations were held back for DLC like the Dreadnaught, which appeared in an early gameplay trailer. You can tell, even after the Supercut, that there were grand ideas at play. They way the early exotics worked, the first PvE community event, the blocked off areas with their secret ghosts which unlocked grimoire entries (which Bungie then threatened to ban people for accessing). The game was a mess in its first year, but it was a _hot_ mess. I know you'd do it justice on Fact Hunt.

I remember there was a minor scandal when it turned out that the PC version had topless female models hidden in the data. Of course, they don't show up in the game, you'd have to go into your installation files to find them. Of course, with the official modding tools, adding them into the game isn't difficult. Edit: The game was TES 4 Oblivion. Forgot to put that for some reason.
