I have grown Sugar Ann peas for two years now and this year, we had over two weeks of temperatures over 100 degrees F (37.7 C). I live in a hot desert climate where peas "aren't supposed to grow". I still had peas growing after the hottest summer on record! They are amazing peas!
I have the same problem this year - I have grown a yellow podded mangetout pea and I should have made the trellis taller, so that the peas didn't tip over under their own weight. Your peas looks good - just a you do Tanya - beautiful as always!
Thank you, Duncan :) And I suppose those taller peas are just a sign of healthy and fertile soil! Yellow podded mangetout sounds really interesting. I'll bet they're easier to spot than traditional green.
@@Lovelygreens Yes, my soil is pretty good - I dig in plenty of rotted horse manure from the stables opposite our allotment site. The yellow (or golden) podded mangetout seed is from 'Real Seeds' in mid Wales (on line). I am letting some pods ripen and dry them off for a supply of seed for future years. They have a nice lilac/light purple flower followed by the yellow pods and yes they are easy to spot when picking - good eaten raw or cooked and very sweet also.
This is amazing Tanya. You are so lucky to eat your raw veg, I'm allergic to many raw fruit and veg, I'm envious. So enjoying your book "A Woman's Garden". Learning so much about our own allotment from watching these. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic video Tanya. Thank you! I just dug up and hung 230 heads of Music Garlic. Nice big fat cloves. This will be enough to replant 250 bulbs and feed us until next summer- yes we use a lot of garlic! Have a great day and hope your gathering went well! Cheers Mike 🇨🇦🍁
Such a lovely video of your wonderful harvest. Everything looks so healthy and your allotment has an amazing view! We’ve got over 200 music garlic to harvest soon but for now we are really enjoying those bonus scapes. Happy gardening!
Really enjoyed this - that harvest on your table is just so impressive! That was some awesome garlic!!! It's not something I got round to growing this year so it's going on the list. Brilliant soft fruit harvest too! I've got Autumn-fruiting raspberries and blackberries, but definitely need to increase my stock and varieties. It's cool to see what and when you're growing since we're really only 100 miles apart as the crow flies 👍
Lovely July harvest video Tanya and all that food is going to be delicious and yummy 😋 It looks like Tanya will be making a separate strawberry bed for next year.
I think that instead, I'm going to remove everything from the pineberry bed and start new there. Pineberries are delish but they're a pain to pick since the berries are relatively small.
I am visiting the island this weekend with friends and have had a great time and the weather has been fantastic. Went on the electric train to Ramsey and Laxey .Your so lucky to live on such a glorious island and felt special being in Laxey knowing your allotment was round the corner, you do a great job with the videos especially the one on the Calf of man and we went to the sound aswell. Keep up the great work
Hey Tan !. How are you ?. I bet you are loving it. I have to catch up with your work. Ive been living on site since March so as you can imagine, it rocks. Just finished stacking my pesticides and insecticides in 5 litre bottles, spring water bottles. garlic and chilli. My kale has done very well, my spinach failed and bolted. I think most peoples did. Been harvesting nettles and comfrey, apparently after making the nettle tea use the left overs to mulch tomato pots, massive toms. x. A 2 this is outrageous !. lol.
What a wonderful harvest you have there! I'm not sure what's up with the strawberries this year, probably the cold spring. Mine are beautiful and red but smell and taste of nothing at all. The birds don't touch them either. I've seen lots of people having the same issue. Happy gardening!
Thanks for sharing all you bounty! I want to plant peas as our goats like them. We won't have enough to bother eating them but the goats LOVE tthem. We have a mess of corn coming in as well as tomatoes n cukes coming in. Zucchini is ready for us to pull as well. I hope to this year, to plant beds of garlic and red onions.
I'm very interested in growing perennial veggies, thanks for showing those. I tried Sugar peas this year, so delicious and fun to grow! I'll try making your nice trellis structure next year to support them better.
i understand the crowding can cause garlic to be wee in size, but aren't there some garlic with single bulbs like onions?...great video and hope you have a lovely visit with your company coming...
You clearly don't have pigeon (berries, spinach) or badger (beetroot, carrots, parsnips) problems and that is a fine harvest. We started pineberries last year and haven't had any crops yet - do hope they produce a fraction of yours. Also thank you for a previous year's advice, it's 'adult ribena' time for the blackcurrants :)
There are some pigeons but not many. No badgers here though. Usually I'd net the strawberries against birds (pheasants!) but they leave gooseberries and pineberries alone. The white colour fools them into thinking they're not ripe 🙂
Much of the work at the new house hasn't begun yet so I'm focusing on the house, allotment, and my business at the moment. It's still a bit of a juggling game, I'll admit!
Hi Tanya. Do you net your berries? I am curious because at the moment I feel like I should. I'm just wondering if you lose many berries to the birds. Many thanks. Suzi
Hi Suzi, I can get away with not netting as much at the allotment. The blueberries and red strawberries get munched if I don't though! In more suburban/urban environments with a pigeon population, it's better to net than not to net, though.
Nice harvest Tanya. How's your new property coming along? I hope you post some videos on what you're doing. Maybe some on how you design a garden from scratch? That would really interest me. Have fun at your party.
It might not have gotten cold enough for the bulbs to form up in that variety of garlic. Last winter was very mild and non of my garlic worked. I didn't plant any this year and I'm kicking myself because it's so so cold I reckon it would have formed up fantastic heads of garlic Regarding your berries is it possible the pineberry cross polinated and mutated monsters 😬
Thanks for a great video! Question about your berries, if you don’t mind: why don’t you net them to protect from birds? How do you avoid them being eaten before you get to them?
Thank you for this harvest video! It’s so inspiring! When I saw the red duke potatoes, I was reminded of your potato container experiment! Have you harvested them yet? So which one worked better?
Picked all mine today and broad beans blanched and in the freezer, garlic has been poor 😢 the peas I planted had 8 to 10 pes in each pod butt like a fool I did not note which varieties was
Hello Tanya, you are doing wonderful job. Full of energy and optimism. What are you doing with those tiny little garlic bulbs near roots of the elephant garlic? Bought a few in spring on Ebay, planted them and nothing, not even a tiny leaf. Cant find a big bulbs in internet or UK not posting them to Czech republic. 😏
Great video! You don't have to protect that perpetual spinach? I'm thinking about growing next year, do you think it's different enough from chard, that it would be worth it to spen money on the seeds? I ask because I already have a lot of chard seeds
I really miss mine. I moved countries 7 months ago and allotment gardening isn’t really a thing, where I live now. For the 3 years I spent in an allotment, I made more progress in my gardening than in the 20+ years previous just doing my own research and gardening on my own, because in the allotment gardens, I learned so much from everyone I met there! That is the biggest part I miss, because even though I have more space to plant in my own raised beds, now, I really miss the social aspect of it!
If I only use a couple of the cloves of a garlic bulb, what is the best way to store it til next time I need garlic to cook? Can I put it back with the other garlic or should it be wrapped up? Put in fridge?
For sugar snap peas, I wait till they are full grown but pick before the pod starts to get a rough surface. Do you find black currents has a poor taste right up to completely ripe and then they are nice and sweet?
Blackcurrants are always a bit tart to me, even when squishable-ripe. They're lovely mixed in with honey-sweetened porridge or in preserves and drinks. I'm not one for eating them on their own. Tastes are always personal 🙂
You know your stuff but are you sure that all those strawberries are white pine berries? Cause I got fooled into thinking that I had more pine berries than I actually had cause I mistook unripe red berries to be pine berries haha
It's pretty clear that they're pineberries as you're picking them. Unripe red strawberries are hard and the seeds white to green. Pineberries are soft and ripe and the seeds red.
I feel pathetic with one mini beet, a handful of peas, 10 onions, and 6 mini potatoes. The rest has been eaten by slugs or didn’t take of to start with…
Nearly everyone is like that when they start. The best thing you can do is literally write down all of your crops on paper. List what went wrong and try to remember when you sowed/planted each. Understanding the challenges will help you avoid many problems next year 🙂 Also, the year isn't over! Get sowing leafy greens, autumn peas, Asian greens, and beetroot
