When I was a teenager I knew an old man down the rd. He barked at me one day. "STOP GOING TO THE STORE EVERYTIME YOU NEED SOMETHING! LOOK AROUND AT WHAT YOU HAVE AN TRY TO MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU!". Couldn't see it in the moment but that old man loved me an was trying desperately to help me👍!

Economy is going down here, he's been cut down to 1/4 the work since company is losing big contracts for commercial buildings. We would be up a creek if we had debt. Y'all be blessed!! God bless you and your husband 🙏 Have a wonderful Christmas Mrs. josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas 🙏 Amen to everything you said 🙏 I'm 58 My husband is 60 We have no CC debit Our home is almost paid off as we / I was raised by my grandmother, who lived through the Depression and my father, a Vietnam veteran. I raised my children to not live above their means , We garden , shop at garage sales etc.... I save everything, even my butter wrappers, to butter my pans , bread pans, etc. I keep them in a freezer bag in my freezer , there is still butter on them if you leave it out to soften and didn't put it in my butter dish fast enough . We downsized our home back in 2016 after we tragically lost our youngest child & only Daughter at age 19 5 months after she graduated from high school Right here in Montgomery, Texas. We still have 3 beds and 2 baths And the plus down sizing into a smaller square foot home was we got more land to garden a lot more . And away from a city . Thank goodness we made that choice in 2016 after we lost our daughter on November 26, 2014, and I just couldn't be there anymore. Plus , I physically couldn't get out of bed , I don't even remember the 1st couple years after I saw her killed in front of me . But so many people we know are living in houses they can't afford because they like living up to the Jones. I'm blessed my older sons also didn't buy crazy priced homes , as we taught them not to be materialistic. Come this spring, we are getting chickens , God bless you 🙏 ❤️

Having a small homestead is better than nothing. Small flock of duel purpose chickens and you have meat as well as eggs. A broody hen does the work. A garden using vertical space, a compost bin, with good dogs even a half acre is doable. Learn to make things you need from scratch, by hand and look for free things or barter. Remember you can even do it in some towns/cities. Keep learning and developing skills.
@JNoMooreNumbers
@JNoMooreNumbers 7 месяцев назад
Some cities allow hens but not roosters so quail are an option. Very quiet hens and males sometimes make a wild bird sounds. Can incubate the eggs with males. Fast turnover too. Lay eggs as early as 8 weeks sometimes 12. Extra males tastes like dark meat chicken. Could raise rabbits too. Have gardens and fruits. Not a homestead to me but growing as much as I can cram and under an acre. Could do more if garage didn't shade a chunk and a few trees I can't afford to take down. Got the risky ones by the house down though.

Moving 3 times in 10 years after being widowed, kept me starting over in gardening. A little more each year. Had to have dump trucks of compost now make enough of my own to not have that expense. Every year add something being on a fixed income. Pretty much down to buying quail feed and firewood now and starting to save seed. Trying to figure out what more fruit like grapes to get and where to put it. Shed blocks sun and north side of house does too. Woodstove debt is now paying itself off now. Getting, splitting and stacking wood is exercise. Winter is my break time after all the canning and dehydrating is done unless a sale on meat comes up. Soon seed starting and firewood for next winter once it gets warm.

I am blessed. My property is paid for. My late husband and I bought this place in the fall of 2006. My old barn has just collapsed in on itself. I'm starting to salvage the wood siding, the uprights and the tin roof material. I'll be using a broken down flatbed trailer for a mobile chicken coop. That will be safer for my flock. I have possum, raccoon and coyote problems. I'll also be building a small outhouse. And I think I can use some of the roof material to make a windbreak on the south side on the horse's loafing shed. Have a blessed Christmas!

We started here with chickens in a coop that was already on the property, then we planted fruit trees and berry patches. The garden went in next. We already had eggs, veggies and berries before adding more expensive infrastructure. Then we started getting apples, peaches, pears. Then later we added goats as we had fencing already. So that added milk products and manure for the garden. With goats coming we built a goat building ourselves. We are not in debt.

I'm one of the extremely blessed inheritance of land. I unfortunately don't have the family that cares. We live on beautiful land with mountains and springs. My husband and I moved here 23+ years ago the land will be in the family for 100 years in January. We didn't have children of our own (here on earth) so we became foster parents. The children we adopted are from the gen z generation and really don't care about the land. It saddens my heart that they don't (willingly) help out. It's so much work to have a small homestead and we are getting older and my husband has health problems. I love our land but recently we have considered selling most of it. I wish our boys loved it enough.

An older friend says that although it is frustrating to "warn " others and then not have them choose to act wisely , in the end , we can only advise , as we are not responsible for their decisions , after we have warned them . Once again, Patara, I agree with everything you’re saying. My husband and I live in Western Kentucky and he is a retired coal minor. He purchased our small farm in 96 and built our home and all the buildings with his own two hands, and eventually with my help. Land prices around here have gone through the roof because this area of Kentucky is known for their white tails. And while there is nothing here, and we are in the middle of nowhere, land prices have gone through the roof between the commercial, big, farmers, and out of towners, who pay ridiculously stupid prices For pieces of land to hunt once a year. So if an opportunity comes available for a small farm, people will pay prices that are just unbelievable. Also again for an area that has nothing, the closest Walmart is nearly an hour away, I do not know how so many people have these $80,000 and up vehicles. All I know is we worked hard to be debt-free before Jackie retired and we don’t have vehicle payments no credit card payments, I do not know how these people sleep at night with all this debt. And just as you were talking about you’re on your husband we have put together a lot of our buildings and Animal housing with reused pieces make do pieces. We don’t have any of those fancy city girl chicken houses that cost $5000 or more and have the little fancy pictures on the inside. They’re safe they’re warm And protected. Also, I’m blessed with the husband who can do just about anything. Well, I can squeeze a dime out of a nickel and have been blessed with the ability to cook. My husband can do anything and fix anything. And with the exception of the upholstery furniture, as it may be, my husband is even made me most of of our furniture. May not many folks standards, because he doesn’t have all the fancy carpentry tools, but I would have nothing else. As always, God bless you for all you do and your good work. I pray you and your whole community. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

What a Story and Blessing - You have laid out. Dollar prices you've discussed are result of Inflation (government authorized" fiat" money printing and it continues) . Deflation (prices decline (and may approach zero - Bankruptcy is a Deflation event) is equally likely. all World Empires have experienced one or both (sometimes at the Same Time) - and Now it's America's turn ). Farming and homesteading is a humble life. It is a lot of work and weather doesn’t stop the work. Rain, snow, winds or even tornados, a lot of planning and responsibility in taking care of the animals. They are not living in the wild and we do have to do our part! The best way to learn what it takes is best said by Paul Harvey, GOD made a farmer. There are good times and sad times that can devastate you. You keep going through the easy times and tough times! Not everyone can do everything. We have to work together and everyone do what they can. Whether it is giving your knowledge because you can’t do or doing for those who can’t and your own family. Learn in steps and build so you get a pattern down and it becomes a habit! It takes time and patience!!

So right, I have gotten all my fence from salvaging, lots of lumber, tools, hardware and many other needed useful things. If I need it, its free and or dirt cheap Id rather have that than spend more cash or rack up debt. My grandfather was a farmer and also worked, at Christmas, he'd wait till the very last moment to buy a tree, he could get a picked over tree cheap. He then took it home, cut the bottom off then cut the branches off that, drilled holes in the trunk of the tree where it was bare and stuck those branches in to make it a filled out tree.They were always nice looking trees when done. It was another lesson about how to make due, how to save money and how to make funny and cherished memories.

Great advice! Homesteading is not a cheap date. We have a 40 acre farm with chickens, ducks, rabbits and a herd of horses. Moved here 42 years ago when it was bare land. We built our barn with a lot of family help. We designed and built our house with help from over 50 friends, family, and church members. Borrowed money from family for the land. Paid it off before starting to build. Both of us worked full time jobs for 5 years but lived on less than one income so we could build our house as debt free as possible. I think many people are feeling the way I’ve been feeling for some time now, scared to death. I’m so overwhelmed that I’m not sure which way to go with all of this. My eyes were opened late and I feel like I’m so behind on what I need to do to take care of my family and be spiritually prepared that a lot of days I just cry. I do pray about it but I really am so overwhelmed that even that can be hard to do some days. Please pray for us Patara❤

Truer words were never spoken Patara. When I heard your words about people going to debt to milk a goat, I think of people who buy horses who know absolutely about them. I have observed this with may own eyes. Additionally, people who just "jump into situations" such as buying a homestead and have no idea how to garden or about animals. I grew up on what was left of a large farm, but I don 't feel knowledgeable enough to invest in a homestead. I can garden and I do not about horses and chickens. We had 500 white leghorn chickens to take care of as a child. When! That was quite an experience as a child. We did not have room for a horse, cow, goats, or pig. Thank you for hour wonderful video Patara.

My husband's job (and his insurance) was a Godsend when I got seriously ill. Fortunately he WANTED to work in town, which meant that he was not unhappy commuting to town. We chose our place right off of a major road so there were not stop lights and the snow plow cleared the big road first. And so I had the garden, the chickens, etc and, on occasion, I also worked in town

Good advice! I wound up disabled and on ssdi. When that check for back payment came, I moved to a cheaper state and bought a small piece of land. I didn't want to be stuck in an apartment with ever increasing rental costs. At least here, if I have to there's wild food (lots of oyster mushrooms this year), I own the place so I don't fear being kicked out, and I raise what food that I can. It keeps me active.. no time for pity parties. I thank God, daily, that I'm here.

Went into town to see how things were doing in the larger community about 12 miles away. Walmart was busy, with the parking lot pretty full. People seemed to be if fairly good spirits. I did my best to smile at people and joked with the workers. I have to be careful with that, as I have a dry sense of humor and it doesn't always translate as intended. One gas station had increased prices to $2.79 but in town it was $2.52 to 2.55 which was good enough to make me glad I filled up a couple small gas cans (2.5 gallon) and the Jeep. Gas was foamy, guess that's the winter blend stuff. I didn't notice people buying gifts so much as food, but I was mainly just looking around with my head on a swivel, so I didn't run into people. I usually avoid driving this time of year, too many distracted drivers, but figured I should get enough fresh food to carry me past Christmas and the 'return the junk they don't need' crowd. Picked up some Isopropyl alcohol 70% and saw where they were now selling 50% too. I trust the 70% more for disinfecting. I really, really tried to be pleasant. Maybe I get points in heaven for letting people in line at the stop light. Okay, I'll need a lot of points, but still, it might count.

I love the advice that you give out. And I know that people used to say when my husband and I were in business or you both are so lucky. Just like your farm. There’s no luck in it you have to work many many hours. And nothing comes for nothing. And I know we put in a lot of 16 to 20 hour days. And I’m sure a farm is a lot more work than cleaning out houses and delivered and picking up our houses. So you had to do things that I didn’t have to vice versa but I know y’all are working hard and my husband and my self we tried to stay debt-free. And when we sold the business, the only thing that wasn’t 100% paid for was one big truck and we paid it off because even though we were corporation my name Was the responsibility to that truck even though it was a corporation. So that business was 100% free and clear when the paperwork changed hands. And I made sure that the employees got their bonus in the middle of the year because I figured they wouldn’t get it at Christmas any longer. I was correct on that. So we didn’t have a lot of money when we walked away becauseyou made sure the employees were taken care of as well. So you keep giving the good advice because it’s awesome advice having a farm or being self-employed is not an easy job. Unless you’re gonna give 100%, it’s not a 9 to 5 job

The best advice ever. I was trying to move to your area in 2019. A very wise preacher told me to really sit down and count the cost. When I realized I did not have a comprehensive plan and would have ended up with a big failure causing me to leave with proverbial tail between legs. Decided to table the idea and save more money. Then 2020 happened. I am so glad i listened when God said not now.

Single homesteading full time working Mama of 2 here! Since 2018 I've been building my inheritance of almost 6 acres of land. I keep expanding my gardens, animals, buildings etc as my budget allows. I've done it completely debt free. Yes, I've had help from my boss family and neighbors. Yes, I have failed at things. But next year, I hope to be growing all our food! It took a lot of time, patience, grace, and learning to make it. But it is worth it in the end if you don't overwhelm yourself. You can do it!!!!!!

You know it Patara! My mom and dad bought the property that i live on now 50 years ago. Everything was paid for with cash. Dad also had a 40 hr/week job and took night classes on small engine repair, electrical and plumbing repair and welding. No homesteaders can afford to pay someone to come fix everything that breaks. Renting equipment or borrowing from neighbors is the way to go. Lots of good deals at the auctions too. 😊

Been following you and other homesteading youtubers for years... I'm glad now that I followed slowly the advice... before I was big into rental properties always wanting a return on investment... why would I want to buy vacant land with no ROI... 6 years ago I bought 350 acre woodlot with a 40 acre lake in Southeast Canada, been gradually selling the rentals, my wife and I still working full-time jobs hopefully until retirementing in 4 years... we are debt free, the plan is before retirement gradually build a log cabin and homestead on the lake (debt free) and enjoy retirement and homesteading want to thank channels like yours for the advice...

What a terrific video full of great advice!! I have my eye on a little over 5 acres to eventually build on and start a small homestead. I'm single, self employed, and in my mid 50s. The financial end has always been my biggest concern. I know me well enough to know that I have super big dreams and tend to jump in at everything with both feet! Thankfully I'm getting better at that as I age but it is a constant inner battle. I love the guidance of starting with just a few chickens and a garden. I love to garden and can/preserve food and cook from scratch. I learned last year how expensive a tomato can be when I went full on and had an unexpected relationship change 2 weeks after my garden was fully planted. I got nothing from that garden. And had about $3k invested in it with the wood for the beds, the good dirt (ours is red clay in central North Carolina), the plants/seeds, stakes, fertilizer, organic bug sprays etc. All of it was for naught. I too like animals more than most people. I know I will reach my goals in time and in the meantime, am working hard to pay off debt and be able to buy the land at least with 50% down. I won't start building the house til the land is paid in full so in reality, I know I'm probably 3-4 years out of moving out of the city and at that point, I'll be 56-58 years old. I am committed to being responsible and not getting in over my head though. Thanks for being real with us Patera. It is a good reality check and I've saved it to go back and re-listen to when my excitement overtakes my logic. 😊 Merry Christmas to you and yours!

God bless you. I am 51 years old, cleaning bathrooms, and trying to get out of debt and build my pantry. We lost everything when "C" hit. I am trying to save so I can build some raised beds for a garden. I got a canner recently to be able to do some canning in 2024. It's a horrible feeling to my age trying to start over again. But I have a "baby" emergency stash and a job. So, as long as I am able, I am going to be focusing on debt and food preservation ❤

Yes, I totally agree with your advice. My husband and I both work, but we decided 2 years ago to get chickens, mainly because the predicted egg price hike. We also started planting our own garden. Unless you seed save, a garden alone can be very costly! Really, the only benefit we see out of our hard work is that I do not have to buy eggs and I can put vegetables in the freezer for winter. I work at a school so I have more time off than most people, so that helps during the summer garden. We are in our 50s and 60s, so it's a little harder. Yall listen to Patara, she is giving great advice. Love ya, Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas James, Patara & Family! I will be 62 next month and I am disabled. I have been Blessed to have inherited my little place in a small town, so it is paid for. I have been gardening my back yard for some years now, and we rely on what I can get in and produce. I get in as much as I can and still have room for my bull terrier. Other than that I am paying off the cards amongst helping my grown children out as well. Right now, my youngest son had hurt his back and been out of work since Aug. We are getting by, Thank You Jesus! Right now chickens are out of the question, as much as I would like to, it would be too much of an expense right now. May God Bless & protect all of you!
